Hi Muff, I have been on holiday and may have missed some of this thread. I have photos of both the cairn on the roadside above the Beef Tub and the gravestone in Moffat graveyard. DGFHS have a copy of a Newspaper article on this tragedy written around the time. The article is very critical of the Royal Mail for the way they treated their coach drivers and guards over late delivery of the mails. The mail coach, loaded with passengers, set off in a terrible snow storm and hardly left Moffat before it stuck in the drifts. Help was summoned and all the passengers were returned safely to town. Driver and the guard, afraid of delivering the mails late in Edinburgh and the possibly of being being fired for lack of diligence with the service, unhitched a horse and set off with the mail bags intending to reach the Crook Inn. They thought their efforts would be recognised and their jobs would be safe. They got lost in the storm and both perished. You will be able to get copies of the photographs and the article when you visit the Centre. Cheers, Sandy
I am starting a search of the Ewart family who, legend has it, left the area in 1804 in a potato boat heading for South Wales. Any information on possible sources of information would be greatly appreciated. With thanks Peter Farmer
I am searching for MUNDELL's in Moffat and Kirkmichael parishes (or at least that's where I've found them to be so far!!) Mar sin leat edward Limpsfield, Surrey Using Norton SystemWorks
THANK YOU LIST Due to this list my neighbour over the back lane, Sue, discovered that we were both interested in genealogy. Surprise surprise both researching MUNDELL of Dumfrieshire WHAT A SMALL WORLD especially as I had on hand a letter of 11 years ago from someone researching her direct line ! We would both be interested in anyone researching MUNDELL (& spelling variations). We have quite a lot of information collected over the years and I would be happy to share mine, It is snowing here so a good day for genealogy Alison in Calgary (with a neighbour over the back lane!)
He died in a snowstorm trying to deliver the mail from Ednburgh to Moffat. A Goodfellow also died - there is also a memorial at the spot where they died. I can get you a photo in about a week. We should have been at Moffat today but it is a bit wet & very windy. Regards Charles
Hi Muff This memorial refers to the two men who drove the Mail Coach and died in a snowstorm near the Devil's Beef Tub. There is a cairn by the roadside and another in the cemetery. Regards Ian. Does anyone know if there are any Dumfries & Galloway Newspapers online, that are archived for older papers and that can be accessed without a fee? ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the WebMail system at mail.tqci.net --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by mail.tqci.net]
Hi Audrey: I forgot to mention that I have the Monument Inscriptions for three burial grounds in Middlebie Parish, namely Carruthers, Middlebie Church and Pennersaugh which contain hundreds of names, if you have some that you would like me to look up I would willingly do so. Audrey, Adding to Jeanette's reply, there is a group of residences at Palmersgill Bridge currently located about 3 miles SE of Middlebie and about 1 mile E of Eaglesfield. They are in Middlebie parish. Go to _www.streetmap.co.uk_ (http://www.streetmap.co.uk) and type in Eaglesfield as the Place Name. Although the area is not labeled on the online map (but is labeled on my OS Pathfinder map) it is the group of houses due north of the "U" shaped bend in the Kirtle Water. They are just west of Burnfoot at the hump in th road. The old Victorian map also shows this area as Palmersgill as of 1862. Go to _www.old-maps.co.uk/_ (http://www.old-maps.co.uk/) and type in Eaglesfield as the GB placename and go east a bit. The image is dark and hard to read in that area, so zoom in and be patient! I can send you a scanned version of the current map that shows the buildings. Please contact me off-list. Hi I have an ancestor Robert Hughes who had a grocery shop in Loreburn Strret in the late 1800s. I understand it was a family business that was passed on to his descendants. They apparently had a mobile grocery van also, which was wellknown in teh DUmfries area. has anyone come across this, or have any memories of it ? Dear Irene, Thanks very much for your useful and informative comments.I have only just started on this line really so I am not a member of the D&GFHS yet. Yes the family did appear to move together at sometime before 1841 most likely around 1838 I have found James Murray senior and the five children in all census'from 1841 in County Durham. In all cases the entries refer only to Scotland with the exception of James who once was described as being born Dumfries, Dumfriesshire NBL!!! and Robert Murray who has consistently been quoted as being from Durisdeer,Durrisdeer Duradean amongst other spellings. Do you happen to know if there are registers of births other than the OPR s for non-conformists? Thanks for your feedback Cheers Ian in Hong Kong ----- Original Message ----- From: Lowlandscot@aol.com To: treeman@netvigator.com Sent: Monday, October 18, 2004 6:37 PM Subject: Re: [D-G LIST] Fw: MURRAY/DICKSON -Dumfries,Ruthwell&Durisdeer The baptisms would not appear in Scotlandspeople if the family was roman catholic; and they would be less likely to appear if the family were members of a church other than the church of Scotland ..eg episcopalian, free church etc. When did the family move to Co Durham, was it before the 1841 census? Have you found them in all the censuses?..sometimes instead of Scotland you get the actual place. James Murray's being of ruthwell in 1812 only means that he was there when the banns were read, it doesn't follow that he was born there. There are newspapers in Dumfries going back to 1777 .... it might be worth looking for a marriage intimation. If you are a member of the D and G FHS you could probably get someone to look it up for you since the indexes and newspaper fiche are held in the FH centre. Irene

Hi Cassandra Here's the wedding date - Thomas McMILLAN married Elizabeth OSBURN 24 March 1758 at Tynron, Dumfries. The births of the daughters are on the IGI. Do you have the dates for these? No parents unfortunately. Cheers, MAGGIE Sandra Casson wrote: >Hello, Listers. > >I feel I`ve tried everywhere I can to trace the parents or siblings of Elizabeth OSBURN / OSBORNE / USBORN. She married Thomas MCMILLAN in March 1758 at Tynron so I would assume she was born some time between 1830 and 1840. She and Thomas were the parents of Thomas - my gt gt gt grandfather, Mary, Catherine, Robert, Isobelle, Andrew and Janet. If anyone out there has any information on Elizabeth or anyone else mentioned I`d love to hear from you. > >Many thanks >Cassandra > > >==== DUMFRIES-GALLOWAY Mailing List ==== >FIND YOUR ANCESTORS >http://www.directcon.net/tomas/Ancestry/index.html/ > > > >
Hi Audrey, only Palmerstone mentioned in the 1841 census for Middlesbie is a "Palmerstone Lodge" which at that time was occupied by the Troughton family. Hope that helps. Kind Regards Jeanette
I am researching the Huxtable, Chesney, Caig & McKay families of Kirkcudbright & Wigtown Scotland. My GG Grandfather was Archibald Huxtable (Oxtable) born about 1800-1808 (He) Archibald Huxtable married Mary Caig (Kaig) in 1835 and they had three sons: James Huxtable (Oxtable) b-1836 Hugh Huxtable (Oxtable) b-1843 John Huxtable (Oxtable) b-4 Mar 1849, married Janet McKay in 1868 and had nine children: William Huxtable b-1867 Edward Huxtable b-1869, married Agnes Chesney in 1900 and had eight children. James Huxtable b 1871 John Huxtable b-1872 Janet Huxtable b-1874 Jane Huxtable b-1876 Mary Huxtable b-1877 Archibald Huxtable b-1879 Sarah Huxtable b-1880 My line continues down from Edward Huxtable who emigrated to Canada in 1904. I have not been able to trace Edwards brothers and sisters, nor have I been able to find anyone researching the Huxtables of Kircudbright/Wigtown. Thanks, Karonne
Dear listers , I am new to this list as I have recently traced my family back to this part of the world. I have a Robert Murray b.circa 1813 Durisdeer whose parents were James MURRAY b. circa 1790 and Margaret b. 1789. I believe that James and Margaret were married in Dumfries parish on 16/Feb/1812 which if correct would mean that Margaret,s maiden name would be DICKSON. On the marriage record James Murray is said to be of the parish of Ruthwell. There were 4 children other than Robert all born in "Scotland" according to various census entries from County Durham. These were:- James Murray b.circa 1812 Jane Murray b.1818/19 Grace Murray b. 1823 Gordon Murray b. 1826 I have have looked for all of these entries on the ScotlandsPeople site and have been unable to find any trace of these people even using very general searches of the Old Parish Records. I therefore have a couple of questions for listers researching in this location. Firstly is it likely that none of their births would appear on the OPR'S.? Under what circumstances would the entries not appear? I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who recognises any of the names on the list or who can assist in any way with locating these births. Thanks for reading this far and thanks in advance for your assistance. Cheers Ian in Hong Kong
