Hi Ken, Wish there was a more definitive answer to your friend's query. I can only speak from my own experience regarding my ancestor taking his children across the border into England to be baptised. Matter of fact, that reminds me that on the baptismal certificates it states: Ecclefechan, North Britain - that was in 1721. Kind of fits in with another thread regarding N.B. My Douglas line comes from Cummertrees - William Douglas and Mary Johnston(e) late 1700's as indicated on the headstone in the Cummertrees Church cemetary. It is partially weathered but was transcribed (incomplete) by Shannon and Gilchrist. Does anyone have a complete transcription of this headstone and / or other Douglas burials in Cummertrees ?? Thanks, Brian Douglas

G'day Margo, Take a look at: http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/ Costs nothing to register and then sign on to CANMORE. Use Auchen as your search and choose D & G as your region. You may even know a parish. You will get 247 hits and then it is up to you to sort out the correct one - if it is there ;-) You probably know a lot more about where/what it may be so you could be lucky. Good hunting. Greetings, Does anyone know if there are transcriptions, or at least an index, of burials in Cummertrees? I'm assuming there is a cemetery there, and if not, where would people have been buried in the late 1700s - early 1800s? I really appreciate the help I have been getting on this quest!! I have gotten some responses off the list so I will share what we have discovered....! We are pretty sure now that Auchennaught was also spelled Auchennaight, Auchenknight and it is a farm due north of Penpont. I found the children that were named in the document christened in Auchennaight, Penpont Parish. So it appears that we have found the farm. Thank you to all that have helped me find information about Auchennaught!! Margo Lurvey
A family of Hyslops were born/baptised 1780-90s at AUCHENAIGHT in Penpont, although it was also recorded as being in Durisdeer. It is marked on SHEET NX 89 at the end of a railway line from the village of Burnhead. One kilometre is rep.by 4cm....I only have copied pieces of the map! Looks like 1:25,000 scale? Hi Margo: You do not seem to be getting any answers so I will give you an Auchenbedrig on which Irvings paid Hearth Tax in 1691 in the Parish of Middlebie in Dumfries. The name also appears in a list of Sasines. It is the only one I could find starting with Auchen. Good luck Stuart Livingstone Brown - Cornwallis Nova Scotia Canada
Please will some kind member send me the web site for the 1851 census, I found some of my names , then had to leave the computer and now cannot find my way back ! Help. Thank you. Margaret in NZ
Margo Have you looked at Auchenage? That definitely existed. If it is not the one it could give you a clue to where to look geographically. David -----Original Message----- From: Jeffery K. While our Canadian cousins are alive to the amibuity, genealogists elsewhere should not overlook that NB can also mean New Brunswick. Is anyone researching the McCall family who were partners in Crawick Mill? I believe them to be James McCall and Margaret Lorimer. They had the following children; John Lorimer McCall, Isabella McCall (married William Elder), Viger McCall, Mary McCall (married James Morrison) and Janet McCall. There was another member of the family George McCall but I am not sure of his relationship to James McCall. George worked at the Carpet Mill in 1858. In a document from Scottishdocs 13/2/1858 George Lorimer Esq. left portions of his estate to his cousins, the McCall families that I have mentioned above. I would love to hear from anyone who is researching this family! Thanks Margo Lurvey

In 1823 Robert Lorimer of Kirkland Farm, Kirkconnel parish died from falling off of his horse. He was the husband of Jane Vigor Muir. In a document from the Dumfries Sheriffs Court, he was 1/6th owner of the Crawick Carpet Works... Does anyone know who the other owners were? Thanks Margo
