    1. Re: Re: Duboise
    2. Elizabeth / Janice... My assumption is that Anerrece is male. I have a copy of an 1830 land grant to Anerrece and, if I'm not mistaken, those were generally granted to males. Three Duboise families were living in the vicinity of the Barrens Fork of the Duck River (Bedford / Warren / Franklin Counties, TN - depending on year) between 1825 and 1840: Stephen, Elias H. and Anerrece. All had small land grants. During the early 1840s, all three families moved into northern Alabama. Probability suggests they were related, and since we know Stephen was a Dubose (son of Stephen, grandson of Isaac), smart money says this line of Duboise are Dubose descendants. Most of my Duboise relatives were Methodist. If Methodist, I may be of further help on that account, also. 2. Rivers, Am still struggling with the info I have to decipher this puzzle. I would be happy to make a copy of the portion of the Michael Harrington manuscript dealing with the DuBose/Whilden connection and snail mail it to you. He lists his sources, which I do not have to verify any of this information. The entire manuscript dealing with the Whilden Family is 100 pages. Harrington has researched this family because of his interest in the Whildens who served in the War Between the States. I have found some errors in the manuscript and am realizing how easy it is to make them. Rereading email that I have sent, glaring errors continually flash in neon. Not to mention the difficulties presented with all the generations using the same given names. At any rate, if you will give me your mailing address, I'll get this info copied and send to you. Best regards, Ann Whilden Lanneau

I am, however, somewhat confused by all of the John Whildens who are involved. As I read your e-mail, Mary Whilden Dubose's ancestry is as follows: 1. Gabriel Whilden (c. 1600 - 1654) married (1) unknown and (2) Margaret. 2. John Whilden I (c. 1630 - 1701) married Mary Folland 3. John Whilden II (c. 1655 - 1706) married unknown 4. Mary Whilden (1687- ) married John Dubose c. 1730 The dates don't seem to work for Mary being the daughter of John II. Mary Whilden Dubose, to my understanding, had several children with John Dubose & would have been too old if in fact the daughter of John II. Did you mean to write that Mary was the daughter of John III and the granddaughter of John II? If so, do you know who John III married? Rivers Lelong

    1. What is Forum Spam?
    2. Steve
    3. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION: Would sending URLs for web sites be spamming? ANSWER: There is no universally accepted definition of what constitutes spam email. The determination of whether or not a particular message is spam is left up to the management of the service provider. So, whatever opinion one person might give may differ from the decision of a particular service provider in a particular case. It is generally agreed that the essential characteristic of "spam" is that it is unsolicited. It is also generally agreed that spam email is unsolicited email sent to many people. There is no agreement on the specific number of people it has to go to before it is considered spam. Now, what is "spam" in the context of messages sent to a subscriber based mailing list service (i.e. Forum)? Firstly, messages sent to a mailing list are automatically distributed to many people. So, half of the general definition of spam is already met. But, are the messages unsolicited? Everyone who subscribes to a subscriber based mailing list service has requested (i.e. solicited) email from that service. Therefore, emails sent through subscriber based Forums are generally not spam because each subscriber has solicited the email from that service. But, the subscribers solicited the Forum email based on the stated topic of the Forum. They did not solicit email on other topics when they subscribed to the Forum. So, off-topic email or messages which are not in compliance with the Forum Policy Statements might be considered spam. If the message is on-topic and in compliance with the Forum Policy Statements then it is probably okay for sending to the Forum. If it is off-topic, or contrary to the Forum Policy Statements, then it is probably not okay for sending to the Forum. If the Forum Policy has no statement against sending URLs or such, and if the message sending them is otherwise in compliance with the Forum Policy, then such messages probably are okay. Again, it is generally up to the management of the Forum to decide if any particular message constitutes spam in that particular Forum. Consult the Forum Policy Statements for further information about what constitutes spam for a particular Forum. Various Forums have a variety of policies on this question. For the SCRoots-L, Coker-L, and DuBose-L Forums that I manage, sending information about URLs is usually okay, as long as the overall message is on-topic and otherwise in compliance with the Forum Policy Statements. Sending URL announcements about off-topic subjects is not okay. Sending URL announcements that are essentially advertisements is not okay. ________________________________________ / _\ \ \ (_/____________________________________/ \ \ \ Words must be weighed, not counted. \ \ \ \ Steven J. 3. I am not a DuBose. But I know one. And have not been able to find out one itty bitty thing. Her name was Miss Dubose and she was married to (I hope) or goodness gracious, lived with my great grandfather Timothy O'Brien in Charleston SC around 1875? I have her family wills and things and her furniture... I think she must have been Mary M. Conyers who married Henry DuBose in 1852. John Stephens held her property(according to this contract) property willed to her by Mr.China all in Williamsburgh and other property around The Santee river. Two boys Julius 8 years old and Morris 7 years old. I have other old documents from 1732 which look like land grants. Can anybody shed any light on this? In one document, her name is spelled Maria. Regards, Bonnie

    3. Dear "ANOC" (Sorry, don't know your name...) James Porter DuBois has an earlier namesake, if memory serves. I don't remember Rueben, but but Porter runs in a couple of lines with researchers who have been on this list in the past. If they don't speak up soon, I'll comb through my notes for them. I have in the past transcribed obits for some of these folks. I believe the line I'm thinking of is ELISHA DUBOISE b. abt. 1830. And for the Elisha researchers, have you seen the will of JOHN PETER DUBOIS of Wilmington, NC? I am awaiting a transcript of it, but since I think at least one Elisha DuBois was from around that area, it would be interesting to view. He was a wealthy man, with property in NY as well as NC. I will be correcting this problem by putting the materials directly on the Forum web site, when I get the time. In the mean time, you can find all the messages by searching the message archives at Rootsweb. Or, you can find some of the material at the SCRoots web site. 2. I have found this to be quite a problem. My gggrandfather was Rueben Gains DuBois born 1849, Charleston SC.(d.1932) he married Camilla Garrett born 1857, alsoin Charleston SC(d. 1928). They moved to Georgia having some or all of11 children there. Nine of their children lived to adulthood. During his life time he used four versions of the name that I know of. When his children were entering school he was using DuBoise and as a result they used that version all of their lives. For the draft of WWI he used the DuBose version. At some point he used duBois. When he obtained his SS# he was back to using DuBois as had his father before him. The brothers I've located records for also used the DuBois version. No one has ever been able to give a reason for his switching around but by the time he died in 1969 he had been with DuBois as a last name for many decades. When ever I search records I always have to look for all variations since I just never know which he used when. I have as yet not been able to find records for Rueben , Camilla and their parents but I keep trying! Anoc53@aol.com

    2. For all those confused DuBoise/DuBois/DeBoise/Duboys/DuBoyce and as many more variatiations... Certainly, no single generation can claim ownership of all misspelled, misrecorded names, but I believe many Duboise descendants can point the finger at the 1790 census taker in the Cheraw District of South Carolina. All DuBose families were recorded with the extra "i." My family is a prime example: Isaac DuBosc->Stephen DuBose->Stephen Duboise->Elias H. Duboise->Elias Hodge Duboise->Commodore Franklin DuBois->Doris Maxine DuBois->me. Stephen Duboise was born in 1758 and served in the Rev. War in 1775-76. He moved to Bedford Co., Tennessee about 1822 (Federal Land Grant for 25 acres on the Barren Fork of the Duck River). His Rev. War pension was applied for and sent to Murfreesboro, TN. While I don't have primary evidence that Elias H. was Stephen's son, the families lived next to one another for several years (Elias received his land grant on the Duck River in 1830)...and the families moved to Alabama about the same time during the 1840s. Elias also named one of his sons Stephen. My grandfather always referred to his lineage as "Scotch-Irish and Dutch." I have evidence of at least 5 of the above spellings in my direct line.

    2. Thanks, Ann. Super. I had most from various of your cousins scattered far and wide but not possibility of a whaler. I love the more exotic aspects of early life, don't you. Wonder if that Seewee area is still recognized? I appreciate it all. I have most of son in law's lines worked out. More than he ever knew, that's for sure. Bebe

    2. Bebe, Isn't the WWW wonderful for genealogists! Here is a brief Whilden background: Gabriel Whilden (also spelled Whelden, Whillden, Whildon, Wheldon, Wheeldon, Wheelden, Wheilden, Whelden, Whilding, Wheelding.....etc.) was born in England c1600. It is unknown when he came to America but there is evidence of him as a settler in Yarmouth on Cape Code in 1638. He was a town officer "surveyor of highways" in 1641-42 & 1647. In 1648 he sold land in Yarmouth and moved to first to Lynn, Massachusetts and then to Malden (today a suburb of Boston) and was believed to possibly have been a whaler. He was married twice, first wife's name is unknown; second wife's name was Margaret. He had at least two sons: John (c.1630-1701), Henry (c.1625-1694); two daughters: Catherine (c.1623-1689), Ruth (c1627-1673); there are some who believe there was a third son, Ralph. Gabriel left a will dated 11 Dec 1653 and died in January 1654. Our Whilden line comes from Gabriel's first son, John. John was probably born in England c.1630. About 1653 he married Mary Folland (Holland), d/o Thomas Folland of Yarmouth. They had 3 sons, Joseph (c1656-1725) who would establish the Whilden line in New Jersey; John (c1655-1706) who established the line in South Carolina and Thomas (c1670-75). John & Mary's second son, John was married in Salem, Mass. in 1681, his wife's name is unknown. Baptism records in Salem show they had at least 7 children: Gershom (1681-1695), John (c.1683), Mary (c1687), Jonathan (c1689), Joseph (1693), Samuel (c1694) and Elisha (c1695). In 1695 John and family left Salem with a 52-person colony that later shipwrecked near Cape Fear, NC in 1695. The colony was brought to Seewee (northeast of Charleston) by Gov. John Archdale of the Province of Carolina. This is where the Wappetaw Congregation Church was founded and where some of our Whilden ancestors are buried. Jonathan Whilden (c.1683) married Elizabeth Dubose, d/o Isaac & Suzanne Couillandeau Dubose, about 1721. Upon his older brother's death, Jonathan became the guardian for John's son, John Whilden (III). Jonathan and Elizabeth had 7 children: John (c1731), Jonathan Jr. (c1722), Joseph (c1724), Elisha (c1729), Elizabeth (1726), Suzannah (1788) and Mary (1736). The will of John Whilden [II] cites five daughters, including Mary, who married about 1730 John Dubose (born ca 1694/1799), a Santee River planter and brother of Elizabeth Dubose Whilden. Most of this information comes from a cousin in Islandton SC and a manuscript written by C. Michael Harrington who has written several articles on Whildens in the War Between the States. You can find these articles here: http://www.awod.com/gallery/probono/cwchas/bio.html Hope this helps, Ann in GA
