    3. The main Driscoll stronghold is in West Cork: Baltimore and the islands; also quite a few in Skibbereen, Bandon, Bantry, Dunmanway, Cork City and surrounding areas. See the official site for more info: http://www.baltimore.ie/heritage/odriscoll.html And no, all of my Driscolls--Irish and Irish-American--were very strictly Catholic. I am planning a trip to Ireland in September - so far I have never been able to find any info on my g. grandfather Daniel Driscoll........supposedly born 1861 - 1863 in the Portland Maine area. I cannot find his birth, marriage or death certs. I did located some of his children's birth records in Portland and found him living in Ma in the 1900 census...but gone in later ones with his wife Carrie (Caroline Beals) living with Driscoll relatives in Brockton, Ma. I will be staying in the western part of Ireland, and even though I have no idea who his parents were would love to visit an area that is primarily "Driscoll"... Also I was always told that my Driscolls were Protestant is that true of the Driscolls in your family lines....... It is certainly not unlike some that my family have told. We sometimes joke that it'll take more than a few short generations to breed the pirate out of the Driscoll's. The farm granted to Patrick in Merrikville was eventually left to his youngest grandson, my grandfather Edward Denis Driscoll. Unfortunately, being the youngest he was very spoiled, was a bit of a rogue, and was partial to the easy life and alcohol. He ended up losing the whole thing. He died in his forties of a massive heart attack. If I didn't know better I would have sworn he was Sir Fineen reincarnated. I'm sure you all know that story. I have heard the Driscoll clan is one of a very few that can claim they still retain their ancestral home today. In particular, the areas around Baltimore, Schull, Skibereen etc. This is why they hold a reunion every year in Baltimore, because they claim that all Driscoll's can trace their roots back to County Cork to Hy Eidersceol in the tenth! century. I believe that the Driscoll's emigrated due to very, very hard times. I was looking through the lists of ships that brought the convicts to Australia. There were 41 Driscoll's listed between 1791 and 1834 about 10 of which were women. The url is: http://members.pcug.org.au/~ppmay/cgi-bin/db/search.cgi?query=Driscoll&stpos =0&stype=AND It is interesting because if you click on the highlighted names it gives their age, occupation, and the crime that they committed. Many were convicted for very petty crimes and the punishment was always 7 years, 14 years, or life. Some of these were very young. John Driscoll was 15 and sentenced to 7 years for picking pockets. Denis was 13 and sentenced to 7 years for stealing money from a shop. Another John Driscoll was 14 and sentenced to 7 years for stealing spoons. These kids were just babies and should never have been jailed. Anyway, almost without fail they all hailed from Cork except for a few from nearby counties. Thought I would just put in my 2 cents worth : ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
