With Florance the surname change to PAUL seemed to be driven by his wife Mary Ann MORGAN whom he married in 1867 in Poplar. She applied for the marriage licence in the name of PAUL and they married under that name but later baptised and registered two children in Poplar under the DRISCOLL surname. Also used DRISCOLL in 1871 census. When they sailed for NZ in 1873 they used PAUL surname and kept it from then on. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. The main Driscoll stronghold is in West Cork: Baltimore and the islands; also quite a few in Skibbereen, Bandon, Bantry, Dunmanway, Cork City and surrounding areas. See the official site for more info: http://www.baltimore.ie/heritage/odriscoll.html And no, all of my Driscolls--Irish and Irish-American--were very strictly Catholic. It is certainly not unlike some that my family have told. We sometimes joke that it'll take more than a few short generations to breed the pirate out of the Driscoll's. The farm granted to Patrick in Merrikville was eventually left to his youngest grandson, my grandfather Edward Denis Driscoll. Unfortunately, being the youngest he was very spoiled, was a bit of a rogue, and was partial to the easy life and alcohol. He ended up losing the whole thing. He died in his forties of a massive heart attack. If I didn't know better I would have sworn he was Sir Fineen reincarnated. I'm sure you all know that story. I have heard the Driscoll clan is one of a very few that can claim they still retain their ancestral home today. In particular, the areas around Baltimore, Schull, Skibereen etc. This is why they hold a reunion every year in Baltimore, because they claim that all Driscoll's can trace their roots back to County Cork to Hy Eidersceol in the tenth! century. I believe that the Driscoll's emigrated due to very, very hard times. I was looking through the lists of ships that brought the convicts to Australia. There were 41 Driscoll's listed between 1791 and 1834 about 10 of which were women. The url is: http://members.pcug.org.au/~ppmay/cgi-bin/db/search.cgi?query=Driscoll&stpos =0&stype=AND It is interesting because if you click on the highlighted names it gives their age, occupation, and the crime that they committed. Many were convicted for very petty crimes and the punishment was always 7 years, 14 years, or life. Some of these were very young. John Driscoll was 15 and sentenced to 7 years for picking pockets. Denis was 13 and sentenced to 7 years for stealing money from a shop. Another John Driscoll was 14 and sentenced to 7 years for stealing spoons. These kids were just babies and should never have been jailed. Anyway, almost without fail they all hailed from Cork except for a few from nearby counties. Author: cdrisc1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.driscoll/586.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In May of 1825, nine ships set sail from Cork Harbour laden with 2,024 emigrants, 710 of them adults, 1314 children under 21 years of age. The group did not arrive at Scott's Plains (The present Peterborough) until fall of 1825. Once on Scott's Plains, the emigrants were given their allotment of 100 acres for each head of family. The families were divided by townships as follows: Emily 142, Ennismore 67, Douro 60, Otonabee 51, Asphodel 36, Smith 34, Ops 7 and Marmora 6. The 1825 Robinson emigration was organized by Peter Robinson, a man born in New Brunswick of United Empire Loyalist stock. This emigration was the second one he organized, the first in 1823 was a smaller experiment with only 571 Irish who settled the Bytown (Ottawa) area. Original papers and records of the 1825 emigration are in the Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives. Trent Valley Archives is preparing the complete thesis for publication. Much information can be obtained from the book, The Holy Land, by Clare Galvin. It has not been determined why the Driscoll family left Ireland (probably harsh politcal times?) and their exact origin in Ireland is unknown other than the passenger list information which lists Michael's and Honora's former area of residence on the island of Cape Clear, a part of Cork County. The Driscolls were probably fishermen, farmers or pirates before immigration. Michael, or Mack as he was commonly called, came to Canada on the ship Brunswick with brothers, Cornelius & Denis. Cornelius' family was nearly wiped out as soon as they arrived. His wife Johanna Driscoll died at the depot in Peteborough on arrival in October 1825 and Cornelius died in Emily shortly thereafter when a tree fell on him. Daughter Ellen died in Ennismore that same year, but two other of their children's names on the passenger list were crossed off, indicating they probably died aboard ship. Of the original family of 8, older brothers John and James were not mentioned further and only Honorah was left; she married Peter Ryan and they lived on the land until 1848. Cornelius had not left a will so the family fought over title to his land off and on for years. Mack received his own land (South 1/2 L11, C8) in Ennismore Twp. He also laid claim to his brother Cornelius' land and settled on it. He lived there (North 1/2 L10, C5) practically from the beginning.! In 1849, Mack went to Toronto to the Commissioner of Crown Lands and fraudulently claimed Honora had died. She had actually moved with her second husband, a Mr. Ward, to Western Ontario and was very much alive, but this was not discovered until 1867. She lost her claim because she found out too late what had been done When Mack died (year ?) his oldest son Patrick who was then living in the U.S., inherited the property, but since Mack never had the deed, legal wrangling had to be done. His younger son, Lawrence, living in Canada at the time went looking for a "patent" to legally obtain the land for his brother. It could not be obtained, but somehow he held on to the property until finally losing it in 1869 to Cornelius' sister's son, Daniel Whalen. The Peter Robinson paperwork seems to suggest that they settled in "Gore of Emily" after their arrival. But I do not currently have anything about where they lived, did they receive their promised plot of land, and did they sell it when they left, did anyone in the family stay behind, etc.? For my Wisconsin line, I have a Timothy O'Driscoll who shows up in the 1860 census living very close to my Driscolls, so I am trying to figure out if this is family that joined them in Canada, or if they came straight from Ireland, or if, unlikely as it seems, another O'Driscoll appeared in the exact same small mining town in WI. Any insight you may have would be immensely helpful. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Appears that my great grandfather William came over in utero and was born Dec 14, 1825 after the family had arrived in Peterborough in Oct of that year. I have shared my family tree with Ancestory.Com (One World Tree) so you can get to my lineage by looking for William and his wife, Matilda Friend. I am descended from Patrick D Driscoll b 1876, Cork Ireland, Denis Driscoll b 1824, Lanark County Ontario, Edward Denis Driscoll b1888 Lanark County. Due to all the familiar names and the fact that the family claimed all the Driscoll's in Ontario were somehow related, it is possible that Patrick had brothers named Denis and William. I also have a website at www.tribalpages.com. The username is dsinoz. Although we do not have a Catherine, we do have a Mary O'Brien who married a Michael Driscoll. Hopefully you will find some marriages and names in common. I sure would appreciate any info you might have. My mom and I are attending the Driscoll family reunion in Baltimore, Ireland this year and I am hoping to check out some of the churches in county Cork for marriage certificates : ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had a Canadian genealogist go as far as she could get. The passenger list is the best evidence we have. Not sure what happened to the parents, Michael and Honora. How can I help you?
