Samuel Bailey Dowsett b. 1811 was the eldest son of Samuel Dowsett and Elizabeth Blackwell who had married on 29 Sept 1810 at St Leonard's, Shoreditch, London. SBD was baptised at the City Road Wesleyan Chapel, Finsbury, London on 1 March 1811. I note that you have a birth year of 1809, but I believe this is the same man. SBD had 5 siblings: Eliza Hephzibah 1813, Ann Abigail 1815, Emma 1817, Maria 1820 and George Frederick 1822. As you probably know, Samuel senior was discharged from his employment as foreman and weaver at a Spitalfields silk works, and way subsequently transported. His wife Elizabeth emigrated to Tasmania in about 1827 to join him, taking her children with her. The years 1822-27 must have been a difficult time for her and her children - as they must have been for Samuel too. I have read the court report of Samuel's trial, and I don't think that the evidence against him was conclusive. Did you know that the name 'Bailey' was the surname of Elizabeth Bailey (1763-1841) the wife of William Dowsett (1762-1819)? William and Elizabeth were Samuel Dowsett's parents, and therefore grand parents of Samuel Bailey Dowsett b. 1811. William and Elizabeth Dowsett are my 3 x great grandparents, and yours too, I think. My 2 x great grandmother was Samuel Dowsett's sister, Elizabeth Dowsett, who married Thomas Bartram Gardner on 31 December 1815 in Islington, London. I have quite a bit about this family, going back to the 1600s, and would very much like to share info with you. This would involve e-mail attachments. Would you contact me at annking@o2.co.uk if you would like more information? Best wishes Ann Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
