First of all, thankyou for sharing your pictures and also the wonderful information about you and your family. I do remember Sherry, also Laurie and Carol ( what a beauty).Keawe later told me that Carol was not always very good to him. The last time we talked i think Sherry and Carol were divorced.I do remember an older sister than Barbie. I just can't remember her name. Keawe used to hang out at the Yacht Club with his best buddy, first name i think was 'Billie' last name 'Fink'. They had about 7 children and we were all somehow connected as far as life on the islands went back then.My family, we lived on Old Mokapu Road, in Kailua. Could it be that Ali Morris lived down near the point , a few homes away from us? Did her father divorce her mother later and marry one of our neighbors back then? Oh my goodness...is the world really this small? The name sounds so familliar. We used to all play together. This was all in the late 60's and early 70's. Poomai, we did hear about Alan's son terrible fate. My sister went on and on asking if she could find him when we flew out there to my Aunt Barbara's memorial. I tried to talk her out of it since my sister is very ill, and it was a huge effort for me to take her out to the islands. Also ,she is not mentally stable. She has a big heart, but she has the bi polar disorder.I really didn't want her to try to get in touch with anyone, i knew she would have a hard time just getting thru the whole ordeal of mourning my Aunt and visiting the islands after being gone for so long. When our Lawyer told her about Alan and his son's tragedy, my sister was so shocked that the family had such a tragic life. We both went to bed that night and prayed for Alan , his wife and his son. I calmed my sister down and said 'see Gerianne, others have it even harder' . Dear Poomai...life can be very difficult , right? Yet, it can also be so beautiful. I am just glad that Alan's son, has such a wonderfu! l Father. Yes, i am on Facebook and my name is erni thompson ( lol, hard to believe but that is my real name). My email is 'ernithompson@gmail.com'. I would love to stay in touch with you. My sister Barbara just visited the big island. She is a professor at Stanford University but she i s getting tired of her work there (curater). She was looking into buying a home there. She said it was so very diverse...she loved it but i think she wants to settle in Kaui. I have only been to Oahu and Kaui. I am in Sarasota, FL now near my Mother ( like your Father, she is 88) and my ill sister. I don't know if i will stay here. Somehow Oahu seems to be on my mind alot lately.I have a good retirement ( i flew for Lufthansa German airlines for 34 years ) so i can actually live anywhere. My son is finishing school here in Sarasota, he is bilingual and spent up til a year ago, his school life in Germany with me ,alone. I never want to be too far from him. I wish he would study Law and i even have the hope he may do it on Oahu. This is what i talked to our Lawyer out in Hawaii about, and isn't it a coincidence if he studies Law, like my Grandfather Frank ( and they even look a! like). We just have to see if his grades are good enough. It was a big transition for him and me to leave Germany 9 months ago. That is so wonderful to hear that your mom used to get together with aunt Lurline.Your Mom is the beauty in the picture you sent.Oh my God, she must have been quit a socialite back then.Aunt Lurline was a very special Lady, and like your Dad, she was crazy about horses. So am I. She was actually almost more a Mother to my dad than his own. Maybe your mom met my Grandma too? Her name was Alice Roth Thompson , she was Lurline's sister in-law. She travelled alot with Lurline and acted more the part of an heiress than my Aunt did. She was sun sign Aries and had a very strong personality. Also a big socialite and never spent alot of time with my Dad. When the Massie case evovled, my dad and his sisters had a bodyguard. Life became so difficult that they eventually sent my Dad to live with Lurline in San Francisco where he went to a military boarding school ( and had a horse with him). My Father never forgave his parents for this since he was only 11 at the time. This is why he ad! ored Aunt Lurline and his whole life she always catered to him. Most of the times financially. My Father was an officer, but he later did have boat business's on Oahu. He also was a wild one and had alot of ups and downs in life and could never be faithful. His mother and Aunt Lurline had their hands full with him, believe me! Back to my Grandfather. He was an amazing attorney of his time. He was sp influential that the govenor of Hawaii ate dinner almost evernight at my Grandparents house. He always has a placemat there, whether he showed up or not. Also, my Grandfather was good friends with President Roosevelt and he advised him on alot of Hawaiian politics back then. Honestly, sometimes i don't know if he had good karma for what he did .Also, he bought the Island Lanai, however he lost it to foreclosure since he didn't find any investors back then ( darn, we could be landowners today...lol ;))) My Grandfather died a poor man. He had many debts that he couldn't pay during! , i think the recession back then. My Grandmother ( i am sure with Lu rline's help) got right back on her feet, and did have a long and happy life.At the age of 80 she had 2 boyfriends. Please give your parents my regards. Tell your Mom i wish we could all sit down for tea and chat about these old times. However, we have to be glad that we found this forum where we can exchange our history's. I absolutely love your photo's of your family. I told my sisters, there are so many things you can do, but you can never turn time back. I wish so much i could go back in time on the islands when our grand parents were young. All my love, Erni p.s. i don't think Keawe would want my phone number. He seemed back then to be sort of a recluse?! But if you by chance see him, give him a hug from me. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I agree, Samuel was a very popular name at that time. I do know alot about our family but was searching for more. Here's a photograph of Samuel Dowsett's son's family. His name is James Isaac Dowset. This is where the "Hawaii" Dowsett's began. James I. Dowsett married a Princess of Hawaii, her name was Annie Ragsdale, she was 50% Hawaiian. Her grandmother was one of the Queens of Hawaii, her name was Kahawalu. The hawaiian blood has "diluted" over the years I am a quarter Hawaiian. Information you can share someday with your family of Dowsetts. As they say in Hawaii, A hui hou,"until then", take care, hope to talk to again someday. I don't quite remember your family but I do remember spending time at Keawe's family home in Kaneohe. It was so long ago...but I do know Keawe's father "Sherry" (I could have the spelling wrong) and wife Carol. Keawe and Barbie were the only children at that time, he had many more whom I don't know. Keawe has been living here on the Big Island for quite awhile now with his wife (whom I've never met)and children? Uncle Sherry passed away a couple of years ago as did Uncle Laurie Dowsett (Allan's father) he also lived here. I've always thought it was interesting that all the elder Dowsett males ended up retiring here on the Big Island. My father "Jamie" is 88 years young. He's been a rancher all of his life and prefers being around horses and animals than being in the middle of the concrete jungle in Honolulu. I grew up in Honolulu, went to Punahou school with the! rest of the Dowsett clan. Our families are pretty close to include Bill Morris (1st cousin to my father) his children were Linny, Posie, Toby and Ali Morris, but they are Dowsett's as well. While going to Punahou we lived in Maunawili which was in Kailua and life was all about the water, surfing and boating hence the families spent lots of time together :) My mother "Queenie Ventura Dowsett" was Mrs. America 1959, she was (is) one of Hawaii's foremost hula dancers. She's also a handful, now 81 and still moving around as if she was 30. Anyway, she knew your Aunt Lurline very well. My mother and father moved to the Big Island after they married in Honolulu, I believe in the year 1951. Both my parents spent a lot of time with your aunt at her home here next to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Wow, what a spectacular home, it just recently sold for something like 30 million. My mother thought the world of her and tells stories of the good 'ol days when they were all young and spry. Alan Dowsett, yes it is true that Alan's son suffered an accident that changed his life and that of his family over night. It's so sad because his son was an inspiration to many prior to his accident. He is now a paraplegic and requires 100% care, therefore, Alan and his wife Sandy have relocated/moved to Colorado to look after him. Alan has a very successful business in Honolulu which also requires his attention so he travels quite often between Colorado and Honolulu. I've always admired Allan through out the years as just a great cousin to have, now through example he has shown many what compassion is all about. Back to Keawe....he's a cruiser and I'm sure has taken over what ever kind of fishing business that his father left behind not to mention a good amount of $$$. He's a great guy just wish that we could all see more of each other in our old age. My father has his phone number if want it I can get it for you and email it to you. My email address is poomaidowsett@msn.com. Are you on facebook? What's your real name, well....the one that you used to register on ancestry.com.....just kidding? Is it Erni Thompson? Let's stay in touch. A hui hou, Poomai I read about the Massie Case WOW.. to be a significant part of that trial is something that you would go down in history for!!! Really impressive! No we aren't related, but i was Keawe's first girlfriend and he was my first boyfriend. Back in the 60's. I talked to him on the phone about 25 years ago, but never heard of him since. I was out in the islands a few weeks ago because my Aunt passed away. Her name was Barbara Thompson. My father William Thompson went to school with Keawe's father and also was in the same Yacht Club in Kaneohe. That is where i met your cousin Keawe when i was 11 yrs old. Also, my older sister used to drive to school everyday with him and his sister Barbie, and she later dated Allen Dowsett for a short time ( also a cousin of yours). We heard from our Lawyer this past March that Allen Dowsett has a family tragedy, this really shook me and my sister up. He was, just like Keawe, a very nice person.Really gentlemen... I just looked up old families of the islands because my Grandfather was the Lawyer of the 'Big Five' back in his time ( Frank E Thompson) and my sister Barbara Thompson junior is thinking about writing a book about him. He was also the Trustee and Lawyer for Princess Abigail and her son ( during his Trial on Manslaughter), plus he worked on the famous Massie Case Trial. We are also cousins of the Matson Shipping Company ( my Aunt is Lurline Matson Roth, the ship the Lurline named after her, always went back and forth between the islands as one of the early luxury shipliners. So to make a long story short. I have been living in europe the past 35 years but live in Florida now. I am so caught up in finding out more about our ancestry. I don't think Keawe would do any work on ancestry.com . It was just a spontaneous idea to find my first puppy love. So many memories came back when i was out there this past March. I will read up about your family too one day. I am just slowly! getting more information on the early families , all i can find in books and on the internet. Take care Poomai, good luck with your ancestry, maybe we will stay in touch anyhow. The islands are small and everything always leads back to the hawaiian Kama 'ainas. Samuel Bailey Dowsett b. 1811 was the eldest son of Samuel Dowsett and Elizabeth Blackwell who had married on 29 Sept 1810 at St Leonard's, Shoreditch, London. SBD was baptised at the City Road Wesleyan Chapel, Finsbury, London on 1 March 1811. I note that you have a birth year of 1809, but I believe this is the same man. SBD had 5 siblings: Eliza Hephzibah 1813, Ann Abigail 1815, Emma 1817, Maria 1820 and George Frederick 1822. As you probably know, Samuel senior was discharged from his employment as foreman and weaver at a Spitalfields silk works, and way subsequently transported. His wife Elizabeth emigrated to Tasmania in about 1827 to join him, taking her children with her. The years 1822-27 must have been a difficult time for her and her children - as they must have been for Samuel too. I have read the court report of Samuel's trial, and I don't think that the evidence against him was conclusive. Did you know that the name 'Bailey' was the surname of Elizabeth Bailey (1763-1841) the wife of William Dowsett (1762-1819)? William and Elizabeth were Samuel Dowsett's parents, and therefore grand parents of Samuel Bailey Dowsett b. 1811. William and Elizabeth Dowsett are my 3 x great grandparents, and yours too, I think. My 2 x great grandmother was Samuel Dowsett's sister, Elizabeth Dowsett, who married Thomas Bartram Gardner on 31 December 1815 in Islington, London. I have quite a bit about this family, going back to the 1600s, and would very much like to share info with you. This would involve e-mail attachments. Would you contact me at annking@o2.co.uk if you would like more information? Best wishes Ann Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
