Hello Ruby, Thanks for your response to my query re. Eliz. DOWNING, Wash. Ind. It seems, from what you write, that Mary had four illegitimate children!?? Is this correct? It also looks like the DOWNINGs and MCCLELLANDs had a lot to do with each other. I know there were a bunch of DOWNINGs in KY but Elizabeth gives her place of birth as VA in the 1850 Wash. Co. IN census. William MCCLELLAND is listed therein as coming from S. Carolina. There is a pocket of MCCLELLANDs in York Co. S. Carolina and a James MCCLELLAND is shown in the index of both the 1800 and 1810 census as living there. The KY-IN connection is obvious but I am trying to get a pattern from VA-S.
