James Downing (1726- ) Took the Oath of Allegience before Thomas Clagett in 1778. He may be the James Downing who married Susanna and had twin sons, James & John, b. 16Feb1756. There was also a James Downing who was born in Scotland in 1760, served as pvt. in the MD. Line, married Asenath Waters, and died in VA. in 1832. additional research is necessary. John Downing, pvt, enrolled by Capt Alexander H. Magruder, 11th Battalion, Md Line on 10Jul1776. Nathaniel Downing, pvt, 1st Md Line, 10Dec1776, discharged 27Dec1779. Samuel Downing (c.1755,MD-1834,KY) Pvt, 1st MD Line, 16Mar1777. pension S35899 He married Priscilla Webb and apparently had children because someone joined the DAR based on his service.
