Does anyone know anything about the Downings in Montgomery Co. ,AL ? My gr- grandparents were Enoch Wells Downing ( b. 1847-d. 5Jan1911 ) and Susan Rebecca Canty ( d.1912 ) . I recently restored their graves in the Canty Cemetery off Mt. Zion Rd. in Montgomery Co. and would love to learn more about them.They are the only gr-grandparents of whom I have no pictorial record. I think his parents were Joseph Spencer Downing and Sarah Jane Luke with his paternal grandmother being a Spencer and his maternal grandfather a Wells ( Enoch Wells ? ) . I was told that the Downings came to Montgomery in 1838 in the same wagons as the Cantys, Benbows, and Turnipseeds from South Carolina ( either Sumter or Laurens Co.s). Any help at all will be appreciated. The only grandparent I knew was a Downing...Sarah Jane "Clevie" Downing Pugh and I know the least about her family of all my lines.
