Downing and Sue: The 1776 Maryland census lists Downings, Francis 40, Susannah 38 or 37, William 23, Rebecca 18, John 1/2?, John 15, Samuel 13, Molley 12, Puck 10, Francis 5 and Ruth 2...and several negroes. This family appears in a Gregath book page 397. Other references: Kentucky's Rev. War Pensioners 1818-1832, edited by K.G. Lindsay, 1977 page 11; Kentucky Pioneers and Court Records, 1929, McAdams; Register of Kentucky Historical Society; DAR Patriot Index, #92665 Fannie Aldridge Bell; The Kentucky Gazette 1787-1800 by Green mentions Francis Downing's plantation on Hickman Creek 4 miles from Lexington; 1800 Kentucky Census: Francis Downings in Fayette [2] and Scott [1] Counties; Work done on this family in the 1970s and '80s was tentative and confusing. It appears to me that Francis Downing was born ca. 1736 in Yorkshire, England and died 1814 in Fayette Co KY; that he 1st married Susanna, then Henrietta Viley. He lived on Broad Creek Hundred, Harford Co MD in 1776. VERY TENTATIVELY, his children: 1. William Rev War, 1755 MD - 1835, m1 Rebecca Cromwell, m2 Margaret Schrock 1793 or did not marry 2. John b ca 1754 3. Samuel Rev War private from MD, 1776-1780, b 1763 d 1834 m Priscilla Webb 4. Rebecca 5. Molley/Mary ca 1764 - ? m George Heydel 6. Powhatan "Puck" b 1766 m Hannah B. Gilbert 7. Nancy m John Crawford Gibson 13. Eleanor m ___ Lackland 14. James 15. George unmarried I believe there are some date problems with Gregath's records on this family. Use carefully. Maryland Rev. WAr Records by Newman, 1938 lists Francis Downing, private in militia 1746, wife applied for pension. Hope this provides some clues. Happy hunting. Sherry
