    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUT.2ACEB/646.664.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Read The Cherokee Frontier by David H. Corkran. This book recounts the story of the Cherokee conflicts with the British from 1740 thru 1762. John Downing was captured by a Cherokee scalping party near a fort named "96" on April 17, 1760. He had been spared earlier that year, but this time they cut off his feet and burned him at the stake. I don't know if it was that day that they killed him, but I list it as his death. I have not seen this book myself but have just the reference to the incident.
