I am looking for the parents of Nancy J. Downing. We have found a Social Security Card application that states John Paten Hite's mother as Nancy J. Downing. I have found two different Nancy J. Downing from Kentucky and may have been cousins. Nancy J. Downing 1 was from Kentucky and that persons email address no longer works so I could not contact them. Nancy 1 I found stated that her mother died when she was young and they family moved back to Ohio and then later moved back to Kentucky. If anyone has any information on this Nancy please email me. Nancy J. Downing 2 was the daughter of Charles Downing of Kentucky. If you have information on either Nancy J. Downing please email me. I have another theory AND this is ONLY MY THOUGHTS ON THIS AND I HAVE NO PROOF HERE that the daughter of Charles Downing may have died and her husband gave the children up to a family member to raise or someone else to raise or they were taken and put in an Indian School AND the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) stepped in and took the children to try to Americanize them and placed them with the a white family to raise (the Hite family). This is just my thought on this and no real proof. I have found that a Maj Downings married an Indian and lived among the Cherokee and many of this family went on the trail of tears. The BIA has been known to break up families and put them up for adoption or in foster care or Indian Schools. This happened a lot back in the late 1800s and early 1900s too. Indian children were placed in Indian Schools way from their families to Americanize them, so the white man said, so that they would not be heathens; not even trying to understanding the culture or the ways of the Indians. AGAIN THIS IS ONLY MY THEORY OR TAKE ON WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED AND IS NOT PROVEN. That would explain them being in the home of John Henry Hite and Mary (--). And John Paten's Social security card stating his mother was Nancy J. Downing and not Mary J. Oh by the way John Henry Hite and Mary were married at the time that Henry Albert and John Paten Hite were born. Henry Albert Hite born Oct 1879 and John P. were born 18 Aug 1881. So if Henry Albert and John Paten were John Henry Hite's and Mary's sons why was Nancy J. Downing on John P's social security card stating that his mother was Nancy J. Downing.. Anyone have any thought on this or can anyone shed some light on either Nancy J. Downing for me. Henry Albert (Albert) Hite born Oct 1879 and John Paten (Pate) Hite born 18 Aug 1881 (Pate's Social Security Card states his mother was Nancy J. Downing) I almost forgot there are a lot of Downing on the Cherokee Indian Rolls. I have checked this out but I don't know who Nancy's parents were so I can't locate anyone yet. Also there are several Nancy (Nannie) Downings on the rolls. So there are more possibilities for Nancy J. Downing's parents than I have stated here. This comes from STARR's book on the Cherokee. This book can be located on the internet or any Family History Center. It has many generations many pages on the Downings and who married who and who their children are. Anyone who has information on either Nancy J. Downing please let me know. I would like to eliminate one or both Nancy J. Downing. Thank you. Joy Durrett
