I have some info on this THOMAS DOWNING who founded Downington,Pa. I can't vouch for its accuracy,but it may give some insight to others researching the man. I don't think there is any connection to my DOWNINGS,even though he was supposed to have been born in DEVON,which is where my ancestors were born. THOMAS DOWNING born 1691 to JOHN and ABIGAIL WHITE DOWNINGE at Devonshire.England. THOMAS married MARY JANE. Their MARY JANE was born 23 January 1835, died 28 March 1871 and married JOHN W. STEELE on 21 April 1853. She is buried in Richwood Cemetery, Henry County,Iowa. They had 4 children: ALVIN, ELLA A.,ULYSSES E. and JAMES E. THOMAS DOWNING left so much money to the Methodist Church that he was committed as insane by a cousin THOMAS A. LEE was appointed as his guardian. THOMAS and MARY JANE also had a son GEORGE. This is all I have on this DOWNING family. I can see one big error now. It says THOMAS was born 1691 and had a daughter born 1835. I think that is quite a big stretch.
