Keep in mind that many Irish immigrated to Nova Scotia and then migrated to other areas, including New Brunswick and Maine. I know there are some Downings and McCarthy families listed in the church records of Assumption Parish in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. Assumption Parish has a website with oodles of birth, marriage, and funeral records going back to about 1860s, and which also includes names of witnesses.
