    1. John Downing -KY - Ohio Repository- Oct. 31, 1828
    2. Published in the Ohio Repository & Stark County Gazette. Oct. 31, 1828----- A 4th article regarding John Downing, Henry Clay, etc. -- this one also has a little more insight to the circumstances, and ends with several men saying that John Downing "is an itinerant negro trader, a cockfighter, common slanderer" and a "grog shop bully". LOLOLOLOL!!!!! I can't help but snicker about this. I can almost feel the political tensions of the time, and am reminded what lengths people go to in order to "support" their political party or candidate. I would say that things haven't changed an awful lot since then. :::grin::: I still have several articles to post about Major Downing, and after reading them and these ones about John Downing, I wonder if the Major and John might be related? Major Downing was a very good friend of General Jackson, as well as a newspaperman and respected militarily....I had to wonder if maybe Major Downing enlisted the "help" of John Downing if they are indeed, related. I cannot locate an article which has the published affadavit which John Downing used, and which started this whole mess. However, there are a few references that it was published in the KENTUCKY GAZETTE, so descendants of John Downing might try to locate the copy in a library in Kentucky. It would have been published sometime in October of 1828......before the 22nd. (Possibly even in September) Feel free to request a copy.
