It is my understanding that he helped the Cherokee Indians get settled in after the Trail of Tears. He wasn't Indian, but married an Indian girl. He eventually became a Chief in the Cherokee tribe. He was Jon Ross's Right hand man. Is this the same Lewis Downing you are looking for?
