Hello, I have been researching my Downing Family roots. They were from Tennessee, and seemed to gradually move from Coffee, to Cannon, to Rutherford Counties throughout the 1800's to early 1900's. I had been stuck at my great grandfather, Andrew LaFayette Downing (born @1836), but thanks to some help from Jim Fox, I was able to determine that his father was Alexander Downing born about 1801. According to Ancestry.com, Alexander was born in either North or South Carolina, and, strangely enough, the Ancestry.com listing had "Downey" as the last name. I'm not sure if that was just a typo or an actual familial variation. Thanks to Jim and Edgar, for their past and future help on this case, but I am thinking that putting as many feelers out as possible is a good tactic. Here is the info I have now. Any additional names, dates, or places would be very appreciated. Likewise, if I can help anyone else out in a bind, please let me know... Alexander Downing (born @ 1801 in NC or SC) Wife: Eliza Sharp (born @ 1815) Children: William (@ 1832), Sarah (@ 1833), LaFayette (@ 1835), William (@ 1836), John (@ 1838), Elizabeth (@ 1841), Robinson (@ 1842), and Harriet (@ 1849). Andrew LaFayette Downing (born @ 1836 in Tennessee) First Wife: Sara(h) Hoover (born @ 1839) - Married January 5, 1858 in Rutherford County Children: George W (@ 1859), Mary Elizabeth (@ 1861), Julia Ann (@ 1863), William H. (@ 1865), and Sara Jane (@ 1867). Second Wife: Roxana (Roxie) Mitchell (born @ 1861, Arkansas) - Married @ 1885 in Rutherford County Children: Bell (@ 1885) , Florence (@ 1888), Hattie (@ 1892), John (@ 1890), and Andrew Hearn (@ 1895). Thanks again to Jim and Edgar for their help. Any further information beyond Alexander Downing would be great, as would any collateral info about Andrew LaFayette Downing and family. Thank you!
