Most American Downings are not native Americans, I suggest you start with your own family and work back generation by generation.. That is necessary because there are quite a few different Downing lines in the United States. The 1st documented Downings were Emanuel Downing & family who came to Salem MA from London England in the late 1630's; and Dennis Downing who was married in London, but lived in Co., Kent (per children's baptism records) until they immigrated. He went to Maine, Some Downings immigrated to Virginia. John Downing came from Ireland in 1654 and lived in MA. Downing was a fairly common name in the British Isles and they continued to immigrate century after century. So climb your tree until you can see which limb you belong on..
