He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jane (Rothrauff) Downing, who died Jan. 20, 2014. John was born April 24, 1930, in North Braddock, to the late Margaret (Scanlon) and Timothy Downing. He is survived by his loving children, Mary Ann (Michael Fey) Downing, of California, Paul J. (Sherry) Downing, of Tennessee, and Karen (Sam) Levenson, of Illinois; his granddaughters, Michaela and Madeline Tondi and Sarah and Rachel Levenson; his brother-in-law, Father Noel H. Rothrauff, O.S.B. of St. Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe; his sister-in-law, Judy Downing, of Jeannette; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors, caregivers and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Timothy Downing (who was killed in action during World War II in France), and Jerry Downing; his sisters, Luella (late Joe) Kline and Margaret (late Charles) Cramer; and his brother-in-law, Father Leo P. Rothrauff, O.S.B. John was! a 1948 graduate of St. Thomas High School in Braddock and a proud Korean War Navy veteran. John worked for many years in the "Big Shop" at the US Steel Homestead Works. He was a member of St. Colman Church and formerly St. Robert Bellarmine. John was a former volunteer with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and was a member of the East McKeesport VFW Hilltoppers Post 8430. Friends are welcome from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at PATRICK T. LANIGAN FUNERAL HOME, TURTLE CREEK/MONROEVILLE CHAPEL, 1111 Monroeville Ave. at James St., Turtle Creek, 412-823-9350. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Colman Church followed by a presentation of military honors. John will be buried privately beside his wife in St. Joseph Cemetery in North Versailles. Memorial donations may be made to Southwestern Veterans Center, 7060 Highland Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
