There was no such person as Dorcas Blois Bellamy. It's difficult to know the name of George Downing's wife as - George Downing's wife's first name on her burial record St. Lawrence Church, Ipswich, Suffolk is shown with 2 marks and a gap between them. The name *Dorcas does not show as her first name. Wording - '..[2 marks]... Downynge wyff of George Buried the 21 of December ...' Burial year - 1610. Under his wife's death are the words 'George Downinge [a word?] was Buried the ...' the wording/date is illegible because it's so faint. Ref: Burial record St. Lawrence Church - Ipswich Record Office. Burial year - 1610. George Downing is buried in the Chancel of St. Lawrence. [now a false floor covers his grave stone]. George Downing father of Emanuel was the headmaster from 1608 to 1610 of what is now known as 'Ipswich School'. *Dorcus/Dorcas Blois There was a Dorcas Blois daughter of William **Blois/Bloys/Bloise of Ipswich, and then Grundisburgh, who was christened 2nd September 1592 at St. Nicholas Church, Ipswich. Ref: St. Nicholas Church, Ipswich transcripts - Ipswich Record Office. Dorcas married a George Downing December 2nd 1611 at St. Nicholas Church. Ref: St. Nicholas Church. Dorcas Downing/e nee Blois was buried 3rd September 1638 in St. Georges Church, St. Cross Village, South Elmham, Suffolk Ref: Burial record at Ipswich Record Office. George Downing was buried in 1655 up by the alter of St. Peters, Spexhall, Suffolk. Ref: His grave stone which also names Dorcas and her father William Blois. ** The 3 different Blois spellings are used for the same family. Dorcas Bellamy. Many years ago I came across a message which stated that a Downing male was linked to the Bellamy name through marriage but it was not to George Downing. I don't think it was a Downing marrying a Bellamy, if I remember correctly it was a Downing wife whose sister married a Bellamy and the author of the message thought that's how the confusion of the name Dorcas Bellamy came to be linked directly to George Downing. George Downing Headmaster and father of Emanuel Downing was the son of George Downing of Beccles, Suffolk and his wife Cicely. Ref: Will of George Downing 1561 Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Proved 26 June 1564. Calybut Downing. Second husband of Elizabeth Wingfield died in 1644 - his will was made October 16 1644.
