Death was caused by heart trouble and old age. Her death came suddenly although she had not been in good health for some time. Mrs. Downing was born in County Waterford, Ireland, and came to America when 12 years old. She first lived in Chicago and later moved to St. Louis where on April 1, 1861, she was married to Patrick Downing, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Downing was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Peter's church. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Shoemaker, seven grandchildren, a brother, Thomas Murray, and sister, Mrs. John Whalen, both of Chicago."
