    3. Hi, I've been reading my emails in reverse order thus I've been asking questions that are being answered in the previous emails. Sorry. My last email I ended with What do know?? I haven't a clue what I meant by that. My research has been on the Littleton and Matheny lines as well as the Downing. The Littleton's and Matheny"s all seem to be related eventually but these Downings are all over the place. Is there an original Downing line that came to this country and from where (England and or ???). Who are the earliest Downing's we have documented in this country? Where did they settle? Is there anyone that is the keeper of this kind of information? A couple years ago I sent $18 to someone to subscribe to a Downing newsletter. The check was cashed but I never received anything. Ouestons,questions,questions...please and thank-you. 3. Hi My computer is on the fritz. I've been picking up my email once a week at the library thus my delayed response. My Downings are from Virginia....northern Virginia, Loudoun and Clarke counties. I've yet to connect with anyone connected to this line although I've yet to do much serious investigating . I've put the names out on this website but no one ever responds. My gggGrandmother was Amanda Downing married William Littleton. I have much info on the Littletons but nothing really on the Downing. I found the names Benjamin (father) and James Downing (son/brother) in the will ofWm. Littleton. It is always difficult to track those maternal lines. Sooo these are southern Downings. What do know??? 3. Hi, I would be interested. I never seem to be able to find any Downings related to my line which comes from Loudoun County Virginia. Benjamin Downing, his daughter Amanda was my GGGgrandmother. I think she had a brother James Downing Anyway how would this DNA study work. I know DNA studies can be a little spendy. 3. If anyone is interested in Maria's suggestion of participating in DNA testing, the website below might provide the answer. After reading all the posts on this list, I have noticed that there are many disconnects and not many seem to be able to make Downing family connections. All of my Downings originate in the counties of Worcester, Warwick, and Stafford in England. I have been told that this is a very common name in those areas. I think it is extremely difficult for Americans to trace their ancestry when their families have been in the US for many generations. A DNA testing project might be the answer. Read over what they say on this website. 1. Re: [DOWNING] Roll call?
    2. My Downings are all from Vermont. I haven't been able to get past this state and so I have no idea which country these Downings came from; England or Ireland. My line goes as follows from me to the first known Downing in America. Ann Borgman b. Spokane, Wa.-Glen Gower b. Shelby, Montana- Harold Gower- b. Chippewa Falls, Chippewa Co., Wi.- Julia Orpha Downing b. Otter Creek, Rusk Co., Wi., George Riley Downing b. March 2, 1851 in Albany, Orleans Co., Vermont, Oliver Downing b. 1807 in Vermont. Oliver and Sarah Annis Downing had the following children in addition to George Riley: Solomon b.abt 1831 in Vermont Susan A.b. abt. 1832 in Vermont Mary b. abt.1836 in Vermont Elizabeth b. abt. 1838 in Vermont Jane b. abt. 1843 in Vermont William Oliver b. Mar. 6, 1845 Albany, Orleans Co., Vermont Rachel A. b. abt.1846 in Albany, Orleans Co., Vermont Charles H. b. February 5, 1849 in Albany, Orleans Co., Vermont In 1854, Oliver and Sarah migrated to Juneau Co., Wisconsin with their younger children. Sarah died there in 1857. Oliver farmed in Dunn Co., Wi. until his death in 1864. His oldest son, Solomon lived in Greensboro, Orleans Co., Vermont until 1883 when he moved to Dexterville, Wood Co., Vermont where he died in 1889. William Oliver Downing is believed to have been in the Civil War as a drummer boy, but all we have is a picture of a man in a uniform with William's name and no documentation to prove it so far. Jane Downig married Henry Nye in Juneau Co, Wi. on March 22, 1864. Rachel married Charles O. White. We believe this event took place in Wisconsin but I'm still looking for a source to prove it. Charles H. Downing was a fsuccessful farmer in Otter Creek, Dunn Co, Wi. and a stockholder in the Rusk Cooperative Creamery. He married Jane Cameron. Oct 11, 1868. His biography is in the History of Dunn County, Wisconsin published in 1925. George R. Downing is my g-g Grandfather. All of his children were born in Dunn Co., Ne married Sarah Geroy in 1873 and together they had 5 children. George farmed at Knapp Co., Wi. and Otter Creek in Dunn Co. He moved with his family to Calgary, Alberta, Canada abt. 1906.
