Maybe but I don't think it is likely. With my Downing lines anyway they have been researched ad nauseum for many years. I would be very [pleasantly] surprised if an unknown record turned up. You've got to figure at this stage that records for 250 years ago simply no longer exist. That doesn't mean that anyone who wants to have DNA testing shouldn't. I was asked for my opinion and I gave it. Your opinion may vary. I suppose that if the DNA test showed up as a positive match between yourself and say someone in New York, you could then compare family records to find the connection. Other families are doing this and are finding matches. It is all quite voluntary. It would be interesting to know if one or both of my Downing lines were connected to some other lines BUT even if the DNA tests said they were you still wouldn't know how they were connected so I don't see the point. Well, the whole idea behind a DNA project is to find links between families which hitherto have been unknown. It is for people who have searched and searched for ancestral family ties and found nothing but brick walls. To start a DNA project, I am told by the owner of the site I posted that 6 individuals are needed to begin. I too would be interested in a DNA project of this sort and quite happy to purchase and take the test. My Downing line is based in England, the earliest I have traced being Henry Downing born about 1716 married Shifnal, Shropshire, England. The family remained in Shifnal as cordwainers (shoemakers) and noted bell ringers until 1805 when they moved to the East Shropshire coalfields of Wombridge, Shropshire (now called Telford) as engineers and miners. The family moved again to the Nottinghamshire coalfields in 1907. Another line from the common ancestor Henry that I am in contact with left Shifnal for Broseley, Shropshire (Ironbridge gorge) as horse breakers and blacksmiths. From whence they left for the Wolverhampton area where they became butchers. Looking at the LDS and other records most of the early Downings in England appear to come from either Devon or Yorkshire. I have not been able to link to those yet as my Henry although married in Shifnal does not appear to have been born there and I have no other indicators. It is possible that branches from my line emigrated to the US and elsewhere during the various economic upheavals that occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries. In particular there were mass migrations from the coalfields to the US in the 1820s via Liverpool. Best wishes, Tony Downing Saffron Walden, Essex. UK
How many others are interested in the DNA project? We need an administrator if we are going to do this. Cheryl and Ray and others who are heavily involved in the Downings..............how do you feel about all this and can some of you take this on? I am more than willing to test my uncle!! I joined the Downing society, and did receive the newsletter, but no one was looking for the Downing line I'm related to. I want Henry Downing/Airy Hitch, (MD-VA-MO). A bunch of them were in Fauquier Co. VA around 1800. Earlene Hi, I've been reading my emails in reverse order thus I've been asking questions that are being answered in the previous emails. Sorry. My last email I ended with What do know?? I haven't a clue what I meant by that. My research has been on the Littleton and Matheny lines as well as the Downing. The Littleton's and Matheny"s all seem to be related eventually but these Downings are all over the place. Is there an original Downing line that came to this country and from where (England and or ???). Who are the earliest Downing's we have documented in this country? Where did they settle? Is there anyone that is the keeper of this kind of information? A couple years ago I sent $18 to someone to subscribe to a Downing newsletter. The check was cashed but I never received anything. Ouestons,questions,questions...please and thank-you. I cannot be the DNA administrator ...................but I would definitely like to participate in the project. My mother's brother is a Downing from the line of Leander Downing b abt 1790-94 and d 1824-5 Chester SC. First of all, someone with the time available needs to volunteer to be the Downing Family DNA Project Group Administrator. That person would set it up through the website I previously sent. Getting the testing done is completely voluntary and to be paid for by each person who chooses to be tested. My understanding is that they keep the results in a confidential file and then notify people when DNA matches are found. If anyone else has anything further to offer on this subject, please feel free to share it with the list. It is all fairly self-explanatory on the DNA website. For anyone who missed it, here is the site address again: http://www.familytreedna.com/ Lynda Virginia -----Original Message----- From: Cynthia Waller <[email protected]> Sent: Feb 17, 2004 11:57 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DOWNING] Downing DNA Hi, I would be interested.
