    3. Greg the rest of the Nancy on the Dawes are younger than Nancy J. Downing who is 28 years old. And Nancy J. Dowing is the oldest one I found on the Dawes. It doesn't mean she isn't on the Dawes. She could be there under her married name. 3. Greg, She is 28 years old on the Dawes. She is not yours, Greg. Nancy that is yours would have been in 1898 48 years old not 28 as on the Dawes Index. Dawes was taken between 1898 to 1914. I went and checked and wished it was. Joy ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2004 8:07 PM Subject: Re: [DOWNING] Nancy J. 1. Re: [DOWNING] Nancy J. Downing-another question
    2. Joy, Her father was James Downing and mother Jane Tucker (also NA). She was also born in KY. I assume in Lower Maysville, Mason County. I would also like to add that after talking personally to Ken Downing and conversing with Joe Downing that they say after learning of my genealogy that I am not related to them. It has to be the Cherokee. As far as I know, no other Downing's existed in Ky or Adams County, Ohio, except for my people, that were not related to them from William on back to PA. Gregg

    2. Joy, I really don't know. However, I believe the marriage took place in Adams County, Ohio. I will have to do some more research. I also don't know about other children. Again she was 17 when she had Charles. It would only stand to reason that she did marry and have other children. thanks, Gregg

    3. Greg, Do you know who her father was because I have a cousin who also connects to this line. Two sisters married brothers and the brothers and the brothers are the ones that would connect to Nancy J. Downing. If you know who her father is that would help him to locate her. Thank you again. 2. Joy, My name is Gregg Downing. My Great Grandfather was Charles Wilson Downing, b. 1871 in Aberdeen, Ohio. His mother was Nancy Downing, b. 1853 in Mason County, KY. She had a brother Robert James Downing, b. 1857, also in Mason County, KY. Their father James Downing, b. abt 1809 - 1813. According to the Lower Maysville, Ky census. He was living with Jane Baldwin in 1850. Her maiden name, I believe was Tucker. According to the 1860 census (same) James and Jane were listed as James Down, with all of the Baldwin children, 10 years older. With the addition of my Nancy and Uncle Robert James Downing. I located them again in the 1870 census of Brown County, Ohio (across the river from Maysville). This time as James Downing, Nancy Downing and James Downing. I also have court documentation as well. I was told at a young age that we were Native American. I also have pictures of my grandfather who looks very Native American. What I have read in the information you submitted may be true. Just a little confusing. I have reason to believe this may be the same James Downing, Cherokee, who is listed in Emmett Starr's books and documentation. Please e-mail me direct for further information. Gregg

    1. [DOWNING] Nancy J. Downing
    2. Joy Durrett
    3. I am looking for the parents of Nancy J. Downing. We have found a Social Security Card application that states John Paten Hite's mother as Nancy J. Downing. I have found two different Nancy J. Downing from Kentucky and may have been cousins. Nancy J. Downing 1 was from Kentucky and that persons email address no longer works so I could not contact them. Nancy 1 I found stated that her mother died when she was young and they family moved back to Ohio and then later moved back to Kentucky. If anyone has any information on this Nancy please email me. Nancy J. Downing 2 was the daughter of Charles Downing of Kentucky. If you have information on either Nancy J. Downing please email me. I have another theory AND this is ONLY MY THOUGHTS ON THIS AND I HAVE NO PROOF HERE that the daughter of Charles Downing may have died and her husband gave the children up to a family member to raise or someone else to raise or they were taken and put in an Indian School AND the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) stepped in and took the children to try to Americanize them and placed them with the a white family to raise (the Hite family). This is just my thought on this and no real proof. I have found that a Maj Downings married an Indian and lived among the Cherokee and many of this family went on the trail of tears. The BIA has been known to break up families and put them up for adoption or in foster care or Indian Schools. This happened a lot back in the late 1800s and early 1900s too. Indian children were placed in Indian Schools way from their families to Americanize them, so the white man said, so that they would not be heathens; not even trying to understanding the culture or the ways of the Indians. AGAIN THIS IS ONLY MY THEORY OR TAKE ON WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED AND IS NOT PROVEN. That would explain them being in the home of John Henry Hite and Mary (--). And John Paten's Social security card stating his mother was Nancy J. Downing and not Mary J. Oh by the way John Henry Hite and Mary were married at the time that Henry Albert and John Paten Hite were born. Henry Albert Hite born Oct 1879 and John P. were born 18 Aug 1881. So if Henry Albert and John Paten were John Henry Hite's and Mary's sons why was Nancy J. Downing on John P's social security card stating that his mother was Nancy J. Downing.. Anyone have any thought on this or can anyone shed some light on either Nancy J. Downing for me. Henry Albert (Albert) Hite born Oct 1879 and John Paten (Pate) Hite born 18 Aug 1881 (Pate's Social Security Card states his mother was Nancy J. Downing) I almost forgot there are a lot of Downing on the Cherokee Indian Rolls. I have checked this out but I don't know who Nancy's parents were so I can't locate anyone yet. Also there are several Nancy (Nannie) Downings on the rolls. So there are more possibilities for Nancy J. Downing's parents than I have stated here. This comes from STARR's book on the Cherokee. This book can be located on the internet or any Family History Center. It has many generations many pages on the Downings and who married who and who their children are. Anyone who has information on either Nancy J. Downing please let me know. I would like to eliminate one or both Nancy J. Downing. Thank you. Joy Durrett
