I don't know why I do this but here is what I have on the subject. Most of this is the work of Joe Downing who for years did it the old fashioned way. Court house to court house, cemetery to cemtery. As always we welcome verified corrections, additions, etc. Please email direct at [email protected] http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=kdown&id=I112 Ken Downing ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 10, 2004 4:01 AM Subject: DOWNING-D Digest V04 #37

Do you know what's stranger than the UFO theory? When I first started looking at my ex-husbands (I emphasize the EX) Downing ancestors, I traced his mother's side and his father side and both sides led back to the same couple son four generations earlier. That couple was William and Malinda. At first I thought I messed up some place, so I laid it out on a chart and sure enough, both side led back to William and Malinda. Fortunately my kids seem pretty normal. I'm researching the Downing line for them. I'm afraid after reading most of these postings, I'd have to agree. -----Original Message----- From: Catherine Hodnett [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, March 09, 2004 9:59 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DOWNING] Virginia Downings Yep, Cheryl, that UFO theory of yours makes more sense all the time! Clyde, I have a William Downing who died in Mercer County, KY, brother to our Francis Downing born 1726/36 Yorkshire. I have long wondered if those VA Downings were ancestors of our Francis and William, because in 1624 another Francis Downing sailed from England to VA, and is supposed to be our ancestor. We have been unable to trace any of his family, yet he is said to have had a family and his descendents settled in that northern neck of VA. Interesting, that. Wish we had more to go on. Are there any Francis' mentioned in those early generations of William's? I would be very interested in anything that would help link my William who married Malinda Barton to earlier generations that originated from England. I have from William on down, but I trying to identify a homeland of origin. I had a William Downing who was married to Elizabeth ? in Middlesex Co., VA in 1670 and they had a daughter named Elizabeth who married my George Blake. I wonder if they may fit into your research. I don't know anything further back on the Downings. Sue

Good point. Gregg
no, what i said was that there was a james downing in the mason co, group of downings who was in fleming co., married to charity furr and the info on his children was very sketchy and i felt this james probably belonged to him. joe [email protected] > [Original Message] > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 03/07/2004 8:25:21 PM > Subject: Re: [DOWNING] Nancy J. That's what I was thinking. thanks, Gregg
Gregg, Sorry, no age on Nancy. There are 6 Nancy's and one Nancy J. There are 3 James's & 1 James Louis . The DAWES ROLL I have is 1898-1914 Charlotte
Charlotte, Help me out. Did you locate an age for this Nancy J. Downing. My Nancy was born 1853 according to the census records. Dawes was taken in Oklahoma between 1909 - 1913. Her father James was b. 1806-1813. I believe he would have been too old to be in Dawes. I sure wish I could pin point if my Nancy's middle initial was a J. I have not a clue yet. thanks, Gregg

If you have an ideas or instruction on how I may find out, anything would be appreciated.
Gregg, There is a Nancy J .Downing, listed in the DAWES/GUION Miller ROLL.Book. My Grandmother was a Downing. She was full blood Cherokee. Her G.G. Grandfather was Major John Downing. It is possible That your Nancy Downing is Cherokee. Most of my Downing family were in Oklahoma. Charlotte
