I have some info on this THOMAS DOWNING who founded Downington,Pa. I can't vouch for its accuracy, but it may give some insight to others researching the man. I don't think there is any connection to my DOWNINGS,even though he was supposed to have been born in DEVON,which is where my ancestors were born. THOMAS DOWNING born 1691 to JOHN and ABIGAIL WHITE DOWNINGE at Devonshire.England. THOMAS married MARY JANE. Their MARY JANE was born 23 January 1835, died 28 March 1871 and married JOHN W. STEELE on 21 April 1853. She is buried in Richwood Cemetery, Henry County,Iowa. They had 4 children: ALVIN, ELLA A.,ULYSSES E. and JAMES E. THOMAS DOWNING left so much money to the Methodist Church that he was committed as insane by a cousin THOMAS A. LEE was appointed as his guardian. THOMAS and MARY JANE also had a son GEORGE. This is all I have on this DOWNING family. I can see one big error now. It says THOMAS was born 1691 and had a daughter born 1835. I think that is quite a big stretch. There must be several more generations out there some where. Clyde Clyde Downing
Any of you Downings with ancestors from County Cork, Ireland may want to look at Researcher Riobard O'Dwyer's posting "Further Families, Eyeries Parish in the 1800s" which he posted Friday, May 7 on the Rootsweb Beara Mailing List. There are a number of Downings listed, including my gr gr gr grandparents, Daniel Downing and Johanna O'Sullivan. Would love to hear from any others who may have come from that area (Eyeries Parish, County Cork, Ireland). My Downings came to Fall River, MA in 1849, went to Northern Michigan for copper mining and eventually homesteaded in Iowa.

Edward Downing was born in January 1857 in Hackettstown, New Jersey. His father (don't know his name) went into the Civil War and was killed at Antietam (1862). Edward was evidently an orphan and went to live with an aunt in New York City. There was a fire and they lost all their things. Edward left and became a cabin boy on a ship. Somehow he met and married Paulina Waltz. They were married in 1882 in Linlithgo, Columbia, New York. In 1883 they were in Rutland Vermont, where Paulina gave birth to Edward Henry Downing. By 1888 they were back in New York where they had: Elizabeth L. (1888); Mary M. (1891) and Charles (1893) Then they moved to Ottawa, LaSalle, Illinois where they had: Pauline (1896); John Mathew (1898) and Albert P. (1903) Edward (from NJ) died in 1909. Good Luck!! I tried to access my file to make corrections and wasn't able to. I finally asked to have them delete the whole file because I couldn't access it to do it myself. They sent me nasty e-mails about reading the directions carefully and when I asked them to delete it, they couldn't figure it out themselves for about 6 months. That's when I found out they shared my file with myfamily.com and rootsweb as well without my permission. I don't deal with ancestry.com anymore myself!! Ilene
This is provided for your information only. It is NOT an endorsement. I don't use Family Tree Legends and have no connection to them. I gather the charter price will only be available in May. The following article is from Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2004 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com <http://www.eogn.com/>. This is late-breaking news. I do not yet have all the details but do want to include a quick mention in this week’s newsletter. Just as I was about to send this newsletter (at 4:00 AM from a London hotel room), I was informed that Pearl Street Software a few minutes ago announced a new commercial online genealogy service. You may know Pearl Street Software that produces the Family Tree Legends genealogy program that I have reviewed in the past. I consider it to be an excellent program; easy to use and yet it has a long list of features that serious genealogists demand. Now Pearl Street Software has announced the Family Tree Legends Records Collection. It's a collection of more than 400 million records that will become available in June 2004. Please note that the new service does not require the Family Tree Legends software for use. According to Cliff Shaw, President and CEO of Pearl Street Software, "The competition is really what got us into this market. Subscription prices have continued to rise for several years now. Personally, I don't feel like the existing services have improved enough to justify their increase in cost. So many of our customers have expressed frustration about the rising cost of genealogy data on the Internet. Some even say that they just can't afford to do genealogy any more, especially some of our users on fixed incomes. In my mind, the genealogy subscription market has become inflated because there's no competition to the existing services. We plan to restore some healthy competition to the subscription market and FAST!" The collection reportedly will contain birth, marriage, and death indexes from most states, military records, land records, court and probate records, biographies, cemetery transcriptions, and hundreds of books. Cliff Shaw reports, "We're going to be investing in our service heavily and adding new databases frequently. 400 million is only a starting point. We'll be adding new collections and features to enhance the value of our service. Our main goal is to make our service as user friendly and powerful as possible, while remaining very affordable." For a limited time, Pearl Street Software is offering a special pre-order price of $19.95 per year to become a charter member. The regular price will be $29.95. I think this is absolutely disgusting. Many of us have a paid subscription to ancestry.com, and it is not inexpensive, either. Now for them to do this, has convinced me to not re-new when the time comes. I believe this comes under the heading of: greed. It is absolutely ridiculous to now begin charging just to even view family trees. Sorry Ancestry.com....you will never receive another penny from me when my subscription expires.
This is for your information. I don't know anymore about it. I don't know if there has been an official announcement. If you want to remove your trees so Ancestry can't make money off of them you have to be diligent. If you don't care if they make money off your work you can stop reading here. Cheryl Rothwell [email protected] Logan County ILGenWeb www.rootsweb.com/~illogan Central IL Regional Coordinator, ILGenWeb Clark, Downing, Harding, Lucas, et al If you submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com (or MyFamily.com) for free viewing by researchers, that's all about to change. Later this month Ancestry plans to begin charging researchers to view your trees. If you don't want that, you'll have to remove your tree. Go to: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/ <http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/> Click on "What's a Preview" Scroll down to #3: Have you already submitted a family tree? A search of the PERSI index finds 189 articles with Downing as the subject. PERSI is the periodical source index of the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Clyde, These are my Downings. Francis was the first of this line to come over here from Yorkshire, Eng.; at least there was one other Francis Downing who came over here in 1624 to VA. He is supposed to be the first of this line, but there is a big gap in information between him and this Francis, who was born in 1726/36. We have not yet found any direct descendents for the very early Francis, who was said to have left descendents in the northern neck of VA. I've been moaning about the stupid Sonny Bono copyright laws. Now there's this. He doesn't say which idiot in Congress is responsible this time. I found out it is COBLE, SMITH of Texas, HOBSON, GREENWOOD, TAUZIN and SENSENBRENNER. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2004 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com <http://www.eogn.com/>. - Proposed Legislation Would Wreak Havoc for Genealogists A new bill before the U.S. Congress proposes to overturn one of the most fundamental concepts of the present copyright laws. If passed, facts would become copyrighted for the first time in U.S. history. The Database and Collections of Information Misappropriation Act (HR3261) would make it a crime for anyone to copy and redistribute a substantial portion of data collected by commercial database companies and list publishers. At first, that sounds like a good idea. However, a bit more thought shows that nobody would be able to republish stock quotes, historical health data, sports scores, or voter lists. In fact, a lot of genealogy information could not be republished. If passed, Google and all the other search engines would be crippled, probably driven out of business. These are online databases that collect information, or facts, from other online sites so that the user can quickly find the information they seek. If Google and the others are not allowed to collect facts that are now copyrighted, how will they be able to index the Web for you? Art Brodsky, spokesman for public advocacy group Public Knowledge, says the bill would let anyone drop a fact into a database or a collection of materials and claim monopoly rights to it. This would contradict the core principle of the Copyright Act, which states that mere information and ideas cannot be protected works. Let's say that a commercial genealogy service such as Ancestry.com or OneGreatFamily.com publishes the fact that your great-great-grandparents had a child named John. Once that "fact" has been published by any commercial service, that original publisher would hold the copyright on the fact, and no one else would be allowed to publish it again. The Family History Library, the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Genealogical Publishing Company, and others would be prohibited from publishing that information again in any of their online or printed works. In fact, private individuals would similarly be barred from publishing the information in their own derivative works. If a commercial site publishes a fact about your ancestors, you would not be able to place that fact on your own Web site or in any book or report that you give to others. The language in this proposed legislation contradicts the core principle of the present copyright acts, which state that mere information and ideas cannot be protected works.
