    1. Old Newspaper Articles - Downing surname
    2. I have copies of several newspaper items regarding various Downing individuals which were published in the Adams Sentinel newspaper (Gettysburg, PA). So far, I have articles ranging from the years 1820-1853. I will be gathering additional records as time permits. The various names mentioned in the articles are: John Downing of Kentucky Lt. Downing who was involved in a duel while in Gibraltar in 1820, stationed on the frigate: Guerriere Joseph Downing of Downingtown Charles Downing of West Chester, PA Major Jack Downing (several articles) - Member of the Downingville Militia, 2nd Brigade; apparently from Downingville, Maine, and conducts the DOWNING GAZETTE there. It appears that he was a very well-known and respected man in military and political circles for many years. Sgt. Joel Downing (cousin to Major Jack) Col. Downing of Florida Joshua ( surname not mentioned, but he is the uncle of Major Jack) Danforth surname - Major Jack stated in one article that his mother was a Danforth. I will make a separate post for each article, but wanted to post this "preview" to give an idea of what I have so far. I will be happy to send a copy to anyone who requests it. It will have to be sent as a file. Once I make the separate postings and you email me with a request, it is important that you use the EXACT subject line that I use in the post. This will ensure that I send the correct item, and that your email is not deleted. Oh yes....as far as I know at this point, I am NOT related to any of the people in the articles and have no additional information about them. Regards, Wee Las Vegas, NV

My line is that of Thomas Downing, after whom Downingtown, PA, is named. He comes from a line of Downings in Bradninch, Devonshire, England, that is well documented back to 1530. Thomas, a Quaker, emigrated to America in 1717. I guess I'm rather fortunate in that this family line is well documented in numerous biographical and local history books as well as other documents. -- Ray Downing

    2. Lynda Roberts
    3. I've been asked for further information on the five gentlemen who have had their DNA tested. They are: Richard Baxter Downing (of Viking origin), Clyde Downing, Ray Downing, Richard Lynn Downing, and James Downing, the last four being of western European origin. There is at least one sample pending from Daniel Downing. Here is the explanation I received from the group sponsoring our project regarding the Viking heritage if anyone is interested: "Scandinavians and Englishmen come from different genetic gene pools, separated by at least 30, perhaps 40,000 years. During the last Ice Age a group of men in western Europe lived in Spain and then moved north into all of western Europe. Their genetic group is called R1b. Another group, called Group I moved north and east out of Siberia after the end of the last Ice Age eventually finding a home in Scandinavia. So when we find men who are in group I living in the British Isles it's pretty clear that they are downstream from the Viking expansion." Again, if anyone wishes to participate, please contact me. I have attached below several of the paragraphs appearing there. I am planning to join your society (waiting until end of month to get a full year) and attempted to contact a Mr.. Jim Downing who I was told was very involved with the site's content, etc. I was later informed that he has faced several health challenges and will not be active at the site for a while longer. My question is, does anyone know of or have access to the name or description of the actual source material from which the statement(s) about Emanuel Downing below refers to? I am most interested in taking the line back as far as I can - and would appreciated any information you might have regarding the sources used in the site as to the Emanuel Downing lineage to Saire de Quincy, Earl of Winchester - and beyond. 2. This is Gregg Downing. All of my father's family was from KY and Brown, Adams, County, Ohio. I may be willing to volunteer. I know of other families who have done the same DNA testing that all of you have. To them it was a big hoax. Some of them were told that they were oriental, which they were not. Let me know more about it. Regards, Gregg
