Ann, We have a Charles Downing out of Fayette County, KY, but I have no family for him. I will have to look up my records for the birthdate; I think we have two Charles Downings, but as I say, we have no family for them. I have a lot of Downings that come out of Fayette County, Ky. Were any of your Downings there during the late 1700's and early 1800's? My line of Downing is out of Yorkshire, England middle 1700's. Hello Ann, I wonder about a possible connection between your Downings m. Elk Co KS and mine, and here's why. My great grandmother was Martha Anne Downing b 1848 Jasper Co IN, dau of Joshua Downing and Eliza Jane Meeker. They later moved to LaPorte Co IN, a north of Tippecanoe Co. She was a young widow of Wm. Jones when she married my great grandfather, Daniel Beaver the 1 January 1874 in Howard Co KS. Now you may know that Howard Co was taken in 1875 to form both Elk and Chautauqua Co KS. She went on to live and die in Chautauqua Co. The interesting thing is, that she had 2 children by Wm. Jones before he died, and one was a son whom she named Charles W. W. Jones. Don' t know where she got the Charles, as her only sib was a James Downing. I do have a list of brothers of Joshua Downing, but do not know if one of them had a son Charles, who would fit in time wise to be a cousin of my Martha. This might be worth investigating. I know that Elk Co KS records were burned in 1906 - and I sure don't know what happened to the records of Howard Co. I live in California, but just returned from a trip into Kansas and tried to find out where the Howard Co records went to no avail. I have plenty on the Downing lines up from Martha, and am always glad to exchange. Marlene

My line came from Bradninch, Devonshire, England, in 1717, settling in Pennsylvania. The immigrant, Thomas Downing (1691-1772) established the settlement in Chester county that became known as Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Web site on this line is at TribalPages: Ray Downing family tree . Please sign the guest book if you visit!
