    3. if this pans out, you have tied up a lot of loose ends for the downing family of mason co,ky. do you work Reason Downing of Henry Co,KY into this in any way. not my line anymore, but interested, keep me advised, joe [email protected] Original Message -------- Subject: Downing-Stephens Date: Fri, 10 Dec 2004 13:50:51 -0500 From: <[email protected]> To: Linda Ready <[email protected]>, Bill Furr <[email protected]>, Wilene Smith <[email protected]>, Deborah Barker <[email protected]>, Ken Downing <[email protected]>, David Miller <[email protected]> CC: Pam Farnsworth <[email protected]>, Dixie Kennedy <[email protected]>, Connie L Beam <[email protected]>, Clyde Downing <[email protected]> Dear researchers, Last spring I received information on my Morrow branch in Lewis Co., Missouri and had no idea where it was going to lead me. I have pieced together something very interesting and just have to share it. Some of you don't know me and others I have had contact with in the past. My 3rd great grandparents were Elias Morrow and Charity DOWNING (b. abt 1823 in KY). When I started looking at all their adult children on the 1880 census, some listed mother born in Indiana. So I'm thinking, born in Kentucky and moved to Indiana as a young child! Then I couldn't find their daughter, Cynthia, on the1880 census. After many attempts I finally found her listed as Cynthia Morris living in KEOKUK CO., Iowa with the Reason DOWNING family. The word "niece" led to one of those moments where I slap the computer desk with excitement. I had collected info on Reason over the years because of the Downing surname and his location in Richland Twp, Keokuk Co., Iowa where I have alot of ancestry. This had me scurrying into my STEPHENS files where I had seen the DOWNING name before. A Jeremiah Downing married to Phoebe Stephens dau. of WILLIAM S. STEPHENS (my 6th grt.). William died in FOUNTAIN CO., Ind. in 1838 and is a focal point of what I have pieced together. I will refer to him often. Basically here is my theory- -Charity, Reason, and a James are children of Jeremiah Downing and Phoebe Stephens -Jeremiah and John (m.Susanna Wilkinson) are children of James Downing and Charity Furr Key locations are KEOKUK Co., Ia., LEWIS Co. Mo., FOUNTAIN Co., Ind., and JESSAMINE Co., Ky. Here are my pieces- CHARITY DOWNING - b. abt 1823 in Kentucky, could have moved to Indiana as a young child - m. Elias Morrow in Lewis Co., Mo. in 1847, Elias's sister Nancy is m. to a James Downing and lived in Lewis Co., Mo., also. - 2nd son is listed as Jere B. on 1850 census, later uses Benjamin as his name. - 1st dau. named Phoebe Jane. - son William E. Morrow m. Nancy Jane McConnell in Keokuk Co., Ia. in 1876. Nancy is a 2nd grt granddaughter of William S. Stephens. William and Nancy are my 2nd greats. - son Martin is living in Keokuk Co., Ia. in 1880 - daughter Cynthia is living in Keokuk Co., Ia. in 1880 with Reason Downing family and is listed as niece. Cynthia m. William H. Downing (son of Reason) in Lewis Co., Mo. in 1882. They would be 1st cousins. - d. 1902 in Lewis Co., Mo. REASON DOWNING - b. abt 1835 in Indiana - m. Drusilla McKinney, grt granddaughter of William S. Stephens, in 1856 in Keokuk Co., Ia. - lived in Keokuk Co., Ia. in 1860, 1870, 1880 - 1st dau. named Phoebe Ann - d. 1883, buried in Reed Cemetery, Richland Twp., Keokuk Co., Ia.. This cemetery has a few Fountain Co., Ind. people in it. - son William m. Cynthia dau. of Charity mentioned above JAMES DOWNING - b. abt 1819 in Kentucky - m. to Nancy Morrow, sister-in-law of Charity Downing above. - lived in Lewis Co., Mo. in 1850 and 1860. - 1st dau. named Phoebe J. - d. aft.1860 JEREMIAH DOWNING This is the Jeremiah Downing, son of James Downing and Charity Furr that I like for my theory. http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bfurr4&id=I168 - b. aft. 1793 - m. to Phoebe Stephens in Jessamine Co. Ky. between 1799-1820. Two other daughters of William S. Stephens married in this county in the same time frame. - 1822 land grant in Shelby Co., Ind. Says he is from Jessamine Co., Ky. This about the time Charity was born and a possible move to Indiana when she was very young. -1830 census, Addison Twp., Shelby Co., Ind. age 30-40. Also in this twp. is a Samuel Morgan, probably part of Margaret Stephens Morgan's family, dau. of William S. Stephens, and sister of Phoebe Stephens. -d. before June 1837, Administration of Estate in Fountain Co., Ind. http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=wilkinsonwilene&id=I0320 PHOEBE STEPHENS -b. abt 1800 based on 1830 census, she is listed last in the will of William S. Stephens, 1838 Fountain Co., Ind. This to me indicates that she could be the youngest of his children. -1840 census, a Jane Downing, 30-40 is in Shawnee Twp., Fountain Co., Ind. I've seen alot of "Phoebe Jane"s and I think this could be her. Brother David Stephens is in the same twp. JOHN DOWNING - m. Susannah Wilkinson Jan. 1, 1832, in Fountain Co., Ind. - d. abt 1835? in Fountain Co., Ind. - widow and sons moved to Davis Co., Ia. Deborah and Wilene, do you think John and Jeremiah could be brothers? And sons of James Downing and Charity Furr? JAMES DOWNING and CHARITY FURR -They had a dau., Keziah Nancy who m. Joseph Higbee. Their children settled in Clark Co., Mo. which is next to the northern part of Lewis Co., Mo. where my Morrow-Downing group was. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lready&id=I0217 - William Furr, bro. of Charity, d. in Fountain Co., Ind. in 1856 and his descendants where numerous in that county. One Washington Furr m. Ann Stephens in 1855. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bfurr4&id=I161 - James Downing had a brother named Reason http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kdown&id=I4 -I like the name Charity. It was my 3rd great grandmother's name! OK folks, what do you think? Comments? Questions? Suggestions? Please forward this to anyone that it might interest. 3. Yes, John, I know how to do it. <g> What you do is unsubscribe using your old address and subscribe at the new address. Did you know you can go to http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ and get a list of everything you have in connection with Rootsweb, lists you are subscribed to, web pages, etc. so you know where you need to change your address. IF you have a web site or other password connected items it will also send you the password, user IDs, whatever. It can be a very useful site. Here is another site http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/addresses/index.html which lists place to jog your memory and has links to help you along. I just had to change all my email addresses so I am painfully familiar with the process. 3. Good morning: John Downing, wife Mary and family were to be found in sw Virginia on Reed Creek by 1749. Then by 1754 they were located in the County of Bedford and Parish of Russell where he died in 1777, possibly after being shot by Tories. Anyone have a John the right age etc. in VA, PA or MD who could be this John!! The known children were William, John, Andrew, James, Ezekiel, Martha, Margaret McFarland, and Mary Yoakum. Any assistance with primary or secondary documentation of this line greatly appreciated. Always happy to swap files. Walt

    1. Info On Downing Civil War Letters
    2. Passing this information along from the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission: The Uwchlan Township Historical Commission announces the publication of "Dear Sister", a collection of Civil War letters recently discovered, written by William and Joseph Downing to their sister Sarah, of Lionville, Pennsylvania. William and Joseph Downing are of the line of Thomas Downing, namesake of Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Publication release date is December 5, 2004. The book may be ordered for $20 by check or money order (no credit cards) from: Uwchlan Township Historical Commission, 715 N. Ship Road, Exton, PA 19341. I have read the letters and they are fascinating. Some genealogical data is included in the publication. Photos of both William and Joseph have been found and are included, as well as repreduction of several fascinating documents. Please feel free to contact me for further information; I have spent some time contributing to the publication (although I have no financial interest in it). -- Ray Downing, Las Vegas, NV

    3. Hello. I've been trying to find out where my Vermont Downings originated for about 7 years now. I am no closer to connecting them to any place of origination or early Downing ancestry... Any suggestions on how I could proceed? Here is what I know on the Downing's. Luther C. Downing was born 1794, lived in Windsor County Vermont. Married a Sarah (Cary/Carey) in 1814-1816 in Vermont. Luther was in the War of 1812 and died in 1849. Around 1820 or so, the Downing's moved to Allegany/Wyoming County, NY. Luther C. Downing and Sarah had a son named Hardin Cleveland Downing, aka Cleveland Downing. Luther and Sarah lived in New York State, Luther died in 1849. Sarah eventually moved to Ohio with her son and daughter-in-law and in the 1870's they moved from Ohio to Tuscola County, Michigan (after a trip to Texas!). Downing names associated with this family are: Ann Jannet Downing, born 1825 Vermont, died 1897. Jane Downing, born 1812 Vermont, died 1903. Names that may be associated with this family are: Witherall/Witherell and Forbes. Any clues/insigts/advice/suggestions would be appreciated! :-) Thank you. Jill

    1. New Subscriber.
    2. My DOWNING interests are as follows: Starting at a Thomas DOWNING who married Kateryn COOPER on October 15 1568 in Diss, Norfolk, England, I can trace my ancestry down through my paternal grandmother Emma DOWNING, born in Usworth, County Durham, December 16 1879. The family mainly stayed in the area of Diss, and Roydon, a neighbouring village, until about 1845. There appeared to have been some who migrated before then into adjacent villages, including Suffolk and possibly Cambridgeshire. They seem to have been mostly agricultural labourers. (There were other DOWNING clusters in Norfolk, in the areas of Norwich, King's Lynn and Great Yarmouth, but I have found no connections between them as yet). However, in the mid 1800's, there was a major problem in agricultural employment in Norfolk due to the increasing population coinciding with mechanisation, and many people migrated from the area to other parts of England and overseas. My g.g.grandfather Jamed DOWNING, born August 31 1828, left Roydon in Norfolk with his older brother Timothy DOWNING. They both went to County Durham in North England, and became coal-miners. There are quite a few descendants still in that area. Meanwhile, the South Norfolk DOWNINGS largely went into the building trade, mostly as bricklayers. I have had contact with distant relatives in Australia and Canada whose ancestors incude DOWNINGs from the same family, who left Norfolk in the early to mid 1800's. My branch of the family seems to have been notable for longevity - if they first survived childhood! My father lived to 95, his mother to 83, and most of their two generation seem to have lived into their 80's and 90's. There were several who, despite being impoverished, lived into their late 80's in the late 1700's. I would be pleased to hear from anybody who thinks they might be connected. Adrian, in Southern Hampshire, England.

I have seen her grave. The poor thing died as a result of childbirth in 1889. She had married Wm. Jones, a native of Ireland, and they had just the 2 children. As I told you, she was his widow when she m. my great grandfather, Daniel Beaver, in Howard Co in 1874. I have found no evidence that Wm. Jones had any other kin in this country. When Martha was a girl, her mother had died in LaPorte Co IN and her father, Joshua Downing migrated to Leavenworth, KS prior to the Civil War. I was thrilled to see his grave in the National Cemetery in Leavenworth on this trip, the only one of my 4 Civil War Soldiers whose graves I had not visited. Perhaps we will eventually be able to link our Downings! Marlene
