Hi Art I hope to correspond more about Thomas and Elizabeth and Edward and Jacket soon, but I am in the middle of funeral arrangements for my father in law, with moving my mother and with my old uncle's broken leg. Please forgive me if I can't respond in a timely fashion. I did look into the Buckland Brewer baptisms enough to get a sense of the names of the would-be siblings of Edward, and I sense that Thomas and Elizabeth (ashton) are the proud parents. Be in touch soon. Russ
I have not posted for awhile so here goes. I am looking for the parents of Nancy Downing born abt 1850 in Kentucky (believed to be Native American). She may have married John Henry Hite/Hiett born abt 1850 in Kentucky Any connection please email me. Joy Durrett
Hello Russ I came to the same conclusion, arrived at the same way. But I was hoping for proof. Accepting Edward as our Edward (for now) Is it to much of a stretch to say, that Thomas (his father) is the same Thomas bapt. 23 June 1667 parents, Tho and Jacket Downinge? Again in Buckland Brewer. Than I hit a dead end. Back to Hartland. I was in contact with Trish Watson the online parish clerk. The only death she had was for Edmund Downing 15 Mar 1792. Is it possible Edmund was an aka for Edward? Later Art
Thanks Adrian I have found a burial for only one of the Edwards - in Hartland - and of course there were no parents mentioned. I will look further into Buckland Brewer and other surrounding parishes for a second burial in hopes of a hint. I have also looked for and not found a marriage or children for a second Edward thereabouts. Maybe he's still alive and lonely!

Hello. Would anyone happen to have any connections to Richard Downing, born about 1769 and Jane Ilsley, born about 1771? Jane was born in NH; not sure where Richard was born. Supposedly, there were some Downing's from this family that fought under Ethan Allen in the 'Green Mountain Boys'. Thank you.
In a message dated 13/04/2005 01:32:26 GMT Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Now Edward Downing and Mary Heard had three children, as far as I know, and a Thomas was the second son. The first, Dominick, was named after Mary's father and they did not have any Williams. Based on an ASSUMPTION that they continued naming their sons after the grandads, I guess at Thomas and Elizabeth Ashton as the parents of Eddy. This seems a very sensible assumption - but a word of caution! I have seen it stated as a matter of unarguable fact that there was a formula for naming infants, and while this did happen in some families it certainly wasn't universal. I have looked at 8 generations of my DOWNINGs in Norfolk, England from 1600 to 1850, and during that time one family named the first boy after its paternal grandfather, and the next after the maternal grandfather; five gave the first boy the same name as his father. The others got names "out of the blue". In at least two cases the wife's father's name was not used for any offspring at all. Many people don't give enough attention to death registers when trying to solve problems such as the two Edwards. The death rate among children was so high that there are many cases where you can decide which of several children is the right one by identifying death for the others. For instance, in Diss, Norfolk, parish registers between 1700 and 1720 there were ten recorded deaths of DOWNING children identifying the parents - "Feb 25 1713 Ann, dau. of Will. and Margaret DOWNING". These deaths helped me to positively identify several of my ancestors. Unfortunately deaths don't really figure in the IGI, so you need to see the registers by other means. Happy hunting, Adrian, Hampshire, England
Hi Art Your Edward DOWNING is my Edward Downing. I went through the same dilemna and went so far as to query the Devon - l list a year or so ago, but never really proved anything. My approach was this: There are two Edward Downings baptised around 1700 in Buckland Brewer (a parish which abuts Hartland. One in on Feb 2, 1703/1704 to Thomas Downing and Elizabeth Downing and the other on December 31, 1700 to William Downing and Mary (?). I found no other Edward Downings baptised in Hartland, Clovelly, Buckland Brewer, Wooley, Morwenstow or nearby near that time. I did find an Edmund (I think in Hartland) who was illegitimate, but an Edmund is not an Edward. Now Edward Downing and Mary Heard had three children, as far as I know, and a Thomas was the second son. The first, Dominick, was named after Mary's father and they did not have any Williams. Based on an ASSUMPTION that they continued naming their sons after the grandads, I guess at Thomas and Elizabeth Ashton as the parents of Eddy. Let's talk, eh? Russ Brown in Vermont
