    3. Sorry to send this via the list, but I've made a couple attempts to reach Art off list which may have failed. I know you (Art) mentioned having had some problems receiving some mail and that I have been suspicious that certain of my emails have not gotten where I sent them, so in case one of those things is happening, please know that I am no longer overwhelmed with immediate responsibilities and would love to connect with you as I believe you and I have a Downing connection that leads all the way to Honesdale, Pa. If you have gotten my emails and just couldn't find the time to get back to me, don't sweat it, I'll still be around (I hope) and interested when you can manage it. Regards, Russ Brown

Surnames: Downing Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUT.2ACEB/1192.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello Heather, did you receive my ' E' dated 30Jan 2005? I am not sure when your David Downing was born, but I hope the following may be helpful. In 1683 work on the Downing St houses began, and No 10 was No 5, and the house was not renumbered untill 1779. On 23 September 1735 the Right Hon. Sir Robert Walpole and family moved in and the house then became the residence of the Prime Minister/First Lord of the Treasury. As Sir George Downing (d.1684) bequeathed in his will the lease of the houses to his youngest son Charles (not William) it is very possible that family members lived in the houses for a time. In those days families such as the Downings would have had homes in the country and go to London for certain events and because journeys took so long people stayed longer at their destinations. In 1722 Sir George's grandson Charles was handling the letting of the houses, so the houses stayed within the family for definitely 38+ years. Good Luck.

If not I hope this helps. Approx three years after George Downings separation and divorce from his wife Mary Forester (a cousin) he started an affair with his house-keeper Mary Townsend and in May 1722 a daughter named Elizabeth was born. Elizabeth married John Bagnell in late 1749 or the early part of 1750. Mary Townsend died March 1765. Good luck.

    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old family photograph identified as Clarance DOWNING which was taken at the Nelson Studio in Plymouth, New Hampshire. The photograph was likely taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with Clarance appearing to be about 5 years old at the time it was taken. In addition to his name it is noted that he is "Uncle Will boy". With just limited research I did find Clarence DOWNING b. 23 May 1897 to William & Elizabeth DOWNING in Thornton, NH. Clarence died in December 1979 in Campton, NH. I'm hoping to locate someone from this DOWNING Family so that this wonderful old family treasure can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

They are in Pennsylvania shortly after 1820 and lived in Pittsburgh until shortly before 1860, when I can no longer find any record of them. Keep in mind that many Irish immigrated to Nova Scotia and then migrated to other areas, including New Brunswick and Maine. I know there are some Downings and McCarthy families listed in the church records of Assumption Parish in Grand Falls, New Brunswick. Assumption Parish has a website with oodles of birth, marriage, and funeral records going back to about 1860s, and which also includes names of witnesses. All info is posted online, and it is a FREE site. To find the website, just type: Assumption Parish Grand Falls New Brunswick .....in your web browser. Very excellent site for French heritage and Irish heritage research, if your ancestors are from that area.

This Cullen was born about 1844. William is a brother to our ancestor, Stephen. Stephen also had a son named Cullen, and my great grandfather, grandson of Stephen, son of George Washington Downing, is also named Cullen. They sure used the same names, again and again, generation after generation! Sure keeps us confused trying to find our ancestors!
