His father is unknown, and Jesse was probably illegitimate. He was born 1848 died 1918 (I think those are the right dates)-- all in Texas. He had several sons: James W, William J, Jacob, Dargan Nathanial, Edgar, (and supposedly another son, Arthur Adams Downing, for whom I've found no evidence). Unfortunately, with the exception of Dargan Nathanial Downing, his sons just disappear from the records. I suspect they went to other states which don't make their records as readily available online. Dargan Nathanial Downing doesn't appear to have had any children. His wife was previously married and already had at least 3 children. The male Downing lines either stayed in Alabama after the Civil War or went to Texas. To my knowledge, none of the family went to the MidWest. The name Israel doesn't show up in this family between 1800 and the early 1900s. I am extremely interested in knowing how you go back to George in the 1500's. I believe you must be claiming the Richard, who married Anstiss Palfrey to have been the son John Downing born 1638-9 and the grandson of Emanuel and Lucy Winthrop. John and Anstiss son, Richard, was born in 1693 in Ipswich, and died in 1702 according to the Boston death records. Richard, the father of the Richard in our line was born in 1693-4, and was the heir and nephew of Thomas Downing, ship owner and merchant of Salem who married Mary Chadwell of Lynn in 1698. You can download the original patents from http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ The fact that John was part of the group from Anne Arundel Co, (now Howard Co.) suggests he was from that area. I have looked for Revolutionary War records and haven't found anything that looks definite. If there are any male descendants with the name Downing, it would really be helpful to have them do a DNA test from FTDNA. The Mansell, Gassaway, Porter, Brown and Frost families are very old and established Maryland families. They tend to marry within their close society. He is a mystery. The first record found for John was his marriage to Ruth Mansell in 1786 in Frederick Co, Maryland. Finding the names of the witnesses assoociated with John Downing in the Frederick Maryland Evangelical Lutheran Church marriage records has changed the direction of the research. The names Porter, Brown & Mansell are from Anne Arundel Co, MD. John's connection with this group indicates that he is not native to Frederick Co. but merely passing through. We can tell from the records that John lived in Frederick Co. 1786-1788. The related couples - John Downing & Ruth Mansell; Joshua Brown and Margaret Mansell (Ruth's sister); and Samuel Porter & Rosy Perkins moved to Fayette Co, KY near Lexington aboutt 1794 where they appear on the 1800 Census. Another sister, Elizabeth Mansell moved to Lexington after her husband Caleb Frost died in 1808. Frederick Maryland Evangelical Lutheran Church John Downing m. Ruth Mansell 5 March 1786 Witness: Beggy and Nancy Burkey, Babby(?) Corner, Richard Porter. Joshua Brown m. Margaret Mansell 19 Apr 1787 >From Baltimore. Witness: Betsey Mansell, Caleb & Ruthi Frost. Samuel Porter m. Rosy Perkins 28 Feb 1788 Witness: William Perkins, Richard Porter, Hannah Scheible, John Dunnin. John Downing and family moved to Butler Co, Ohio by 1807. Joshua Brown and wife Margaret stayed at Lexington and Samuel Porter and wife Rosa eventually moved to Vernilion Co, Illinois. Sept 11, 1819, John Downing of Butler County received Land Patent [Vol 46, p156] from the Cincinnati Land Office, State of Ohio for the N/W quarter of Section 27, in Township 4 of Range 10 (between the Miami Rivers) located in Clark Co, Ohio. He is listed on the 1820 Ohio Census, Clark Co, Green Twp, living next to his son Israel. Again in 1830, he is listed on the Census in Clark Co, German Twp, next to his son Israel. His age is given as 70-80. This is the last known record for John Downing. July 10, 1832, Israel Downing of Clark County received Land Patent Certificate #3189 for the East half of the S/E quarter of Section 26 in Township 2 of Range 8 East in the District of Lands subject to sale by the Cincinnati Land Office containing 80 acres and 76th hundreds of an acre. Signed by Andrew Jackson, President. The land was located in Logan Co, Ohio. Israel is listed on the 1840 Ohio Census - Logan Co, Bloomfield Twp. Bazil Downing is listed on the 1840 Census - Logan Co, Jefferson Twp. Although there has been much speculation that Israel and Bazil were brothers because they both lived in Logan County, I see nothing to support that conclusion. Attached is an explanation of the movements of John Downing starting in Frederick Co, Maryland in 1786. He's involved with Anne Arundel Co, Maryland families - Mansell, Brown and Porter. John Downing and brother-in-law Joshua Brown together with Samuel Porter move to Fayette Co, KY near Lexington about 1794. About 1807, John and Ruth Downing move to Butler Co, Ohio.
