Are you talking about the one in Waverly about 1850? My ancestors are from there and I do know about one . Waverly is in Pike County, Ohio.

This book recounts the story of the Cherokee conflicts with the British from 1740 thru 1762. John Downing was captured by a Cherokee scalping party near a fort named "96" on April 17, 1760. He had been spared earlier that year, but this time they cut off his feet and burned him at the stake. I don't know if it was that day that they killed him, but I list it as his death. I have not seen this book myself but have just the reference to the incident.

I saw a copy of the book in the New Hampshire State Library when we spent a couple days in NH researching our Downings (and George, Sargent, Martin, Cheney etc. families- all Colonial era settlers from Essex Co., Massachusetts ). I agree with Cheryl. Use it for clues but don't rely on it. The compiler did as well as she could at a monumental task, but she relied on family members to furnish the data, and the information is only as good as the sources who were sometimes relying on their memories and family lore, not official records and documents. Transcription errors (hard to read handwriting, typos, etc.) have also crept in. It was privately published. This is off topic but every once in awhile someone emails me they are descended from the Magna Charta sureties. I am skeptical and they get upset. Here is a list of 17th century descendants of Magna Charta sureties. Konnie - I wouldn't know if a copy of the Gregath book is floating around somewhere. I guess you might advertise for one on the Downing List, or have a used book store put out a hunt for you. Marlene
THE DOWNINGS OF EUROPE AND AMERICA contain lines of various Downing men going back to the 1500s into 1800. Some of the Vanns are listed in the portion devoted to Major John Downing b 1638 who m. Hannah Fawling, a full blooded Cherokee. But of course, not all the descendents are gathered up in this compilation. Marlene
I would take the stuff in the Downings of Europe and America, particularly in the back, with a grain of salt. Some of it might be true. The first part, descendants of James Downing, which is her line [and mine] has plenty of errors, starting with John Downing's military service, the purpose of the book. The second part is just collected materials, no proof, including my second Downing line. Use it at your own risk and double verify everything.
