I came across your note, but what has struck me is that we were told as children that our great great grandfather was from 10 Downing Street. He was sent to Australia as he sold arms to the enemy. To go as an ordinary person he gave 10 Downing to the British Govenment. In Austraia he married a Isobelle Bell. I would be interest to know the birth dates etc. I am not to sure if my Grandfather was his son. His name was Albert Hendry Downing, dont know if that is corret?

Clarification, Lucy Winthrop was my G--G grandmother and was the sister of John Winthrop. She married Emanuel Downing and the mother of Sir George Downing - not his aunt. Yes, this is the case. My G---G Grandfather, Emanuel Downing was the father of Sir George Downing and our records indicate as well that this is the case regarding the disposition of the houses he caused to be built in the old axe yard area of Whitehall - which he later named Downing Street. I believe that it was his grandson, also a baronet and the last of his heirs, transfered the property to the government at the time of his providing the means for establishing Downing College at Cambridge. I agree the William Downing and Letitia Huff is probably in no way connected to my Joseph's line. As I recall, that William Downing was in Lancaster (or York?) County, PA, and died there? I do believe I found his will there, but just don't recall? I know I got his DAR or SAR papers, and had that info. Strictly my memory, and could be wrong. I know I looked long and hard at that couple, and convinced myself there was no connection. I know the DAR Patriot Index gives the OH death, but think I proved that wrong? Again, from memory only. As you know, I have read all the tax records for Francis Woodward, as well as deeds and other County records in VA---and can't even show descent of his land. It was apparently assumed by his son's widow and grandchildren that did not go on west to TN. Hello, I have been researching my Downing Family roots. They were from Tennessee, and seemed to gradually move from Coffee, to Cannon, to Rutherford Counties throughout the 1800's to early 1900's. I had been stuck at my great grandfather, Andrew LaFayette Downing (born @1836), but thanks to some help from Jim Fox, I was able to determine that his father was Alexander Downing born about 1801. According to Ancestry.com, Alexander was born in either North or South Carolina, and, strangely enough, the Ancestry.com listing had "Downey" as the last name. I'm not sure if that was just a typo or an actual familial variation. Thanks to Jim and Edgar, for their past and future help on this case, but I am thinking that putting as many feelers out as possible is a good tactic. Here is the info I have now. Any additional names, dates, or places would be very appreciated. Likewise, if I can help anyone else out in a bind, please let me know... She can't see your response. I don't think there is any proof. It would strike me odd that both grandmother and granddaughter had the same name AND married a man with same name. Possible of course but more likely generation confusion. I have not followed her line. She was born March 1, 1773, in Rock Creek, Maryland, so presumably they were married 1790 or so. I have several Huffs, including one who married into another Downing line. I tend to think it was not an uncommon name. Did you try the Huff surname board?

Caleb later married an Elizabeth, in Pike County, OH. You should also see the 1776 MD Census. That's about all I have, but we do share descent from Joseph and Jemima, I believe?
