Heritage Quest. Talk to your library or join a genealogical society that has a subscription. It's MUCH better than Ancesty.com [which provides free space for this mailing list and all the others]. My guess is Ancestry will change to meet the changing times. Remember, the LDS stuff is a long way off and they have two kinds of files: actual records they scanned and contributed by someone. Contributed by someone is no different than any file of that nature -- may be accurate, may not be. Don't get trapped into thinking that just because it was contributed to LDS that it is accurate. Thanks to Dorothy Falk for this news... This is good news for those of us who use the LDS records for family research. They are planning a massive undertaking to make all of their records available via internet ... free. It won't happen overnight, but it is exciting news. You can read about it at the following web address. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,605153189,00.html Now, interesting in helping out? I for one can't wait for this new feature. This is going to be great once it is all done. Hello. Is there a resident expert on the Connecticut Downing's migrational path? Did they (in general) move from CT to NH to VT? Did they stay in VT? Did they have a different spelling of the name in VT, i.e., Downer, Doyen/Doying? Thank you for any help.
Hi, Has anyone from the Emanuel Downing line done DNA testing for the Downing Project??? Thanks, Maria

It would be good for all of us who are descended from Emanuel if there had been a lease of some hundreds of years! Sadly I do not think that this is the case. According to the Government website: "King George II presented both the house on Downing Street, and the house overlooking Horse Guards, to _Sir Robert Walpole_ (http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page174.asp) , who held the title First Lord of the Treasury and effectively served as the first prime minister. Walpole refused the property in Downing Street as a personal gift. Instead he asked the King to make it available to him, and future First Lords of the Treasury, in their official capacity. To this day prime ministers occupy Number 10 in the role of First Lord of the Treasury. The brass letter box on the black front door is still engraved with this title. Walpole took up residence in 1735, but only after having the two houses - the one on Downing Street and the one overlooking Horse Guards - joined together and completely refurbished to match his status." And just to emphasise the unlikelihood of Sir George being sent to Australia, he died in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1684. Captain Cook claimed the East Coast of Australia for Britain in 1770. Adrian

The dates would be wrong - at least one hundred years out-for a Downing to have been sent from Downing Street to Australia. My branch of the family arrived in Australia 1868. I also noted on this Board a reference to George Downing having a lease to the land on which Downing Street was built. He was the freeholder and acquired the leaseholders interest and then was able to build on the street. The question of the ownership of the land is perhaps interesting-unless there was a long lease given to the Government they would have extinguished ownership by possessory right, if they had not bought it. It would be good for all of us who are descended from Emanuel if there had been a lease of some hundreds of years! Sadly I do not think that this is the case. As a matter of interest George was the second graduate from Harvard. A copy of his portait hangs in Downing College. The original is at Harvard. I also suspect the George was not a nice person-perhaps a good thing that his direct line ran out. Rowan Downing QC
And Sir George Downing was in the first graduating class of Harvard University in 1642. His aunt was Lucy Winthrop, wife of the governor of Massachusetts. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2005 10:03 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [DOWNING] Re: David Downing...10 Downing St? > > > In a message dated 23/08/2005 14:39:10 GMT Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > To go as an ordinary person he gave 10 Downing to the British Govenment. > > > > Sorry - this is nonsense! 10 Downing Street has been in the ownership of the > government for over 250 years. My g-g-grandfather was born in 1831. Now of course I don't know when yours was, but nearly a hundred years before 1831 on 23 September 1735, the Right Hon. Sir Robert Walpole moved into the house which is now known as Number 10 Downing Street. the residence of the Prime Minster/First Lord of the Treasury. In Walpole's time the house was No. 5 and not renumbered until 1779. Who was the enemy he sold arms to, and was his name David? I'm sorry I could not have been of any more help. Good luck, Jill.
