William H Downing is my husband's gg grandfather...which makes Anson his ggg grandfather. I just actually started to research this side of the family upon the request of my mother-in-law; who doesn't know very much about this side of the family. I actually already contacted Mr McIndoo and have received the headstone pictures from him. I would love to have a copy of Anson's pension and service records to add to my records if you could be so kind!!!! Thanks again for all the info. You really helped open a door into the past! Nicole

Londonderry, Ireland was born? I know he died in 1698 and is buried on Church Island Lockbegg. He left property to his wife Mary & nephew Adam Downing, this is in his will dated 18th Feb. 1698. I have seen on some websites that he is listed as the son of Emanuel & Lucy Downing born in 1627. I have seen listed that his birth places are.......London, Middlesex, England.......Drummond, England(but the only Drummond in the road atlas is in Stirling, Scotland.)........Cornhill, Norham, Durham, England(NB since 1830 the parish of Cornhill is now in the county of Northumberland). In World Connect Project, his Immigration was listed as 13th June, 1630. Salem, Essex, Mass., but Emanuel & Lucy did not go to Americia until 1638. Also does anybody have information on the contents of Emanuel Downing's will. Thank you, Jill.

The children of John Mathews/Matthews were: Margret, Mary, John, Thomas, William and Jane, born between 1797 and 1813. Margret was born in Ireland. The others were born in Ohio. The siblings are named in the will of Thomas who died unmarried. All of the siblings except Margret who had died and MAYBE John for whom nothing more is known, accompanied Samuel and Mary to Logan County, IL. Margret and Mary married Samuel Downing. Margret had 6 children and Mary 2. John apparently never married. He apparently was still alive in 1865 and but not at the probate of Thomas' will in 1875. Thomas never married. William had two sons, Jerimiah and William. Jane married ? Lawrence. In addition to the probate records Samuel Downing had the Matthews family Bible and carefully kept up the record. The Bible still exists. In 1841 the Matthews siblings sold land in Pike County, OH, prior to moving to Illinois. There is a Sarah Matthews listed in that land deal -- she may have been their mother.

He was then taken by his grandmother Downing, with whom he remained until nine years of age, then finally moving in the meantime to Martinsville, Morgan Co., Ind. His grandmother dying, he made his home with a maiden aunt, Miss Judith R. Downing. While in Martinsville, Ind., he attended the common schools of that village, the only educational advantages that he ever received. In the spring of 1857, in company with this maiden aunt, and her brother, W. A. Downing, and his family, he removed to Washington County, Iowa, landing at Wassonville May 27, 1854." The article goes on to mention in great detail, the Civil War experience of J. L. Matthews, and lists his 2 marriages and children, and the dates for the marriages, death of wife, and childrens' births.
