Josiah is last known to be living in Hamilton Co., Iowa (1870 census). There is a "Jamie" Downing living with the S.F. & Elizabeth Wilds family in 1880 Hamilton Co., Iowa census - it appears that "Jamie" is very possibly Jemima, who is listed as being widowed. Unknown at this time if Jemima is related to the Wilds family. By the 1885 Iowa State census, Jemima has moved to Woodbury Co., Iowa, living with her youngest son Josiah Franklin "Frank" Downing and his family. She remains with his family until her death in 1897. I assume Josiah probably died between the 1870-1880 census years & likely in Hamilton Co., Iowa, but have never been able to find proof of his death or burial. I have known about his grave marker being the wrong one, but wonder why the DAR doesn't have it removed. Also, this is the first time I have heard of the name Bezaleel Downing and I did not not know of the other John Downing, the uncle. Even with this mystery solved, I will still have a hard time trying to join the DAR - I still cannot find death or burial info for my 3rd-great grandfather, Josiah Downing, who was the son of John Downing & Tabitha Johnson, and grandson of John Downing & Hannah Frakes. Downing, listed in your post as son of William Downing and Mary J. McMahan. I know for a fact that he was reared in Hawk Point, MO. My mother is Virginia Ann Downing, d/o George I., and her brother is George Downing. You have George I. listed as having a birthday of Jan. 1899, but I'm fairly certain he was born in June of 1899. If you have questions, I am certain my mother or my uncle could help answer them. One thing that puzzled me all these years is I was told that George I. Downing descended from someone that invented the Conestoga wagon, but once I researched this, it seems more likely to be the Abbott/Downing Coach builders they were referring to, but even then, I have been unable to prove or disprove the linkage. Most American Downings are not native Americans, I suggest you start with your own family and work back generation by generation.. That is necessary because there are quite a few different Downing lines in the United States. The 1st documented Downings were Emanuel Downing & family who came to Salem MA from London England in the late 1630's; and Dennis Downing who was married in London, but lived in Co., Kent (per children's baptism records) until they immigrated. He went to Maine, Some Downings immigrated to Virginia. John Downing came from Ireland in 1654 and lived in MA. Downing was a fairly common name in the British Isles and they continued to immigrate century after century. So climb your tree until you can see which limb you belong on.. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mlcole50 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.downing/2228/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The following information was sent to the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists, Washington D.C. last June. I received a letter from Sarah Seemann, NSDAR Office of the Registrar General - Genealogical Division dated September 5, 2013 thanking me for my correspondence regarding John Downing A034249. She wrote that they had reviewed the documentation and agreed with my conclusion that John Downing had lived in Maryland, not Pennsylvania, during the Revolution. They have corrected their records to change his residence and have reopened his line with Maryland service. She expressed their appreciation for my interest in the accuracy of their records. I was thrilled with their response. Mary Lou Cole Information sent June 24th While researching the Downing Family of Washington Co, Maryland, I have found information that I believe clarifies a mystery that has been a problem for DAR members claiming descent from John Downing, Ancestor # A034249. It has long been known that John Downing b. 1762 lived in Huntingdon Co, Pennsylvania, but there was confusion as to where he served in the Revolutionary War. He did not live in Washington Co, Pennsylvania as some researchers thought but originated in Frederick/Washington Co, Maryland. Not only do the following documents prove that John lived in both Washington Co, Maryland and Huntingdon Co, PA, but the DNA taken from one of his direct descendants matches exactly (67/67 markers) with the DNA profile of Bezaleel (Downey)Downing b. 1777 of Marsh Hundred, Washington Co, MD. To find an exact match is very rare. There is a 99% chance that John and Bezaleel share a common ancestor within eight generations or 200 years. They may be brothers. John also is a close match to five other Washington Co, MD Downing lines. The NSDAR does not presently accept DNA evidence. Documentation: John Downing b. 1762 and his uncle John Downing Sr. b. 1747 are listed on the muster roll of Capt. Basil Williams' Company, 2nd Battalion, Washington County, Maryland Militia (S. Eugene Clements, The Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War, p. 244). John Downing Sr. Private 3rd Class John Downing Jr. Private 5th Class The company was organized and Capt. Basil Williams received his commission 22 June 1778. Maryland Archives: Journal and Correspondence of the Council of Maryland, April 1, 1778 through October 26, 1779, Vol. 21, Pg. 145. John Downing Jr. was 16 years old in 1778. In Maryland, men age 16 - 60 were required to serve in the militia. Following the Revolutionary War, males age 21 : Maryland State Archives Assessment of 1783, Index - Washington County John Downing. WA Marsh Hundred, p. 64. MSA S1161-10-9. 1/4/5/53 John Downing. Therefore, John Sr. & Jr. were in Hopewell Twp. in 1784. 1785 Hopewell Twp, Bedford Co, PA Tax List - John Downing Jr. listed as Single Male. 1787 Hopewell Twp, Bedford Co, PA Tax List - John Downing Jr. married Hannah d/o Robert Frakes. 1787 Huntingdon created out of Bedford Co. 1788 Hopewell Twp, Huntingdon Co. Tax List - John Sr. & Jr. & Robert Frakes 1789 Hopewell Twp, Huntingdon Co. Tax List - John Sr. & Jr. & Robert Frakes 1790 Census: Hopewell Twp, Huntingdon Co. John Downing Jr. 2 m -16, 1 m. 16 , 2 f 1791 Union Twp. created out of Hopewell Twp Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, tax assessment records, 1788-1833 (LDS Film Number:1148579) 1792-97 Union Twp, Huntingdon Co. Tax List - John Sr. & Jr. & Robert Frakes 1798 . . . John Downing Jr. and the Frakes are gone - to Ross/Madison Co, Ohio by 1802. The earlier John Downing researchers may have been confused by the evolution of the townships and counties in Pennsylvania. No one mentioned John Downing Sr. who served with John Jr. in the Revolutionary War and lived near him in Bedford/Huntingdon Co, PA for 14 years. In 1798, John Jr. moved west with his wife's family - the Frakes to Ross/Madison Co, Ohio and then in 1822 to Sangamon Co, Illinois. He died in Sangamon/Logan Co. in 1838 and is buried in the Bowers-Templeman Cemetery at Mount Pulaski. His grave is marked with the wrong Revolutionary War service. 3. This is a follow-up to my post to the Downing list in Jan of 2009 re the maiden name of David B Downing’s wife Emily. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DOWNING/2009-01/1232374718 I had found a bio of Jeremiah Downing b May 31, 1835 6th born child of David B (Sep 4, 1797-1856) and Emily Downing (of CT, Cayuga Co. NY, Crawford Co. PA, and Erie Co OH) which said his mother was Emily Hotchkiss ["Valley of the Upper Maumee River: With Historical Account of Allen County and the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana" Published by Brant & Fuller, 1889, pg 220] This conflicted with genealogies I had found online showing her maiden name was WHITNEY. Recently James Downing, a descendant of the couple wrote to me giving me his source of the maiden name “Whitney” The following are excerpts from our correspondence: ---------------------------- From: Jim Downing “The information I have on Emily Whitney came from a book written in 1857 by Henry Austin Whitney entitled “John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown, MA.” and published by Henry W. Dutton & sons, Boston. On page 25 he mentions that a daughter of Cyrus Whitney of Geneva, NY had married David B. Downing.” -------------------- From: Anne Halford To: Jim Downing Subject: Re: Emily Whitney or Emily Hotchkiss? Interesting. I don’t have a marriage record for them ...... Jeremiah, who said his parents were David B and Emily Hotchkiss, should have known their names. .... There is a chance, that needs to be ruled out, that the 1st wife died and he had remarried. Did the book have dates for Emily Whitney or her parents? ..... Geneva is in Ontario Co. NY which isn’t adjacent to Cayuga Co., but the family did move around. I’ll see if I can locate the family in 1830. Cyrus Whitney was his neighbor in Cayuga Co. in 1820! So they were in proximity.
