I note a lot of new folks have joined this mailing list. I want to welcome you all [I now live in the south] and encourage each of you to list the Downing families you are researching. I am researching the John Downing - Hannah Frakes [maybe PA] lines and also the Timothy Downing [MD] line. I think I am looking for the UFO that deposited them here. <g> Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com Logan County, ILGenWeb, coordinator> http://www.rootsweb.com/~illogan/loindex.htm Logan County mailing list> LOGAN-L@rootsweb.com Downing mailing list> DOWNING-L@rootsweb.com
In a message dated 98-06-26 20:10:36 EDT, you write: << am researching the John Downing - Hannah Frakes [maybe PA] >> Tough name. I've got 13 John Downings in the database, 10 of them from PA, but no spouse by that name. I shudder to come across a John, Joseph, or Thomas Downing any more.....<g> Ray
Thank you. I understand your reference to the UFO! I am researching the Francis Downing line of Maryland. He was born 1736 in Yorkshire, England. He married Susannah (Wells?) over there.. They came over here and settled in Harford County, MD. Owned land in Deer Creek Hundred, and one other hundred I can't recall right now. His children are: William, Samuel, Richard, John, Powhatan, or Puck, Francis, Jr., Ruth, Mary/Molly, and Susannah, and Rebecca. One researcher suggested that William might be a younger brother or nephew staying with Francis, and Rebecca might be his wife, because on the 1776 census of Harford, there are two Johns, one just about fifteen and the other just six months. Could be. They moved to Fayette County, KY about 1790/1791, I gather all of them. Powhatan is my direct line, and I can't find him after Harford County in 1776. However, he married a Hannah, and had a family, so someone found him(Downings of Europe and America, by Greggith). Two of his sons I did locate in Davies County, MO in 1850--Powatan 2, and Morean, my direct descendent. Morean moved on, and I haven't located him again either. My great grandfather left MO and came down into Indian Territory, and settled later in what is now Deleware County, OK. I found Powhatan 2's son, Powhatan 3, in Tulare County, CA on an 1900 census. But where the first Powhatan landed I don't know. I sure would like to, and to find Morean again, too. Sue Hodnett (Shodnett@aol.com)
I have just joined your list and will give a summary of my Downings. William, b. around 1800-04 somewhere in KY. 1st married Nancy Petty and had a daughter, MARY ANN b. 1823, KY. KY and the following children with the last names of Stevens: Thomas J. (Came to Iowa with Samuel Miller family), William, Richard, Rachel and Marion. Thank You, Ruby from Iowa
Hi Cheryl, Yes, that was the title of the book. It has been a few years ago that I saw the book, so the complete title had escaped me. Thank you for your correction. I have been warned several times about "any" books in print. It is good to use them as a research assistance, but not to take them as totally true. Myself, I always check and document my information, as I do not want this happening to me, when I share info, I want it to be true and as accurate as possible. As far as this being part of the Downingtownm, PA., group, I do not know I have a couple of other relatives looking for this line also, I will have to ask them if they know. Thank you for the website for the Dowings, I will send it on to the family. Thank you, Betty
Welcome to the list. Would that book be 'The Downings of Europe and America 1273-1973'? That book has some good information and some bad information. Since it is centered on a major error in one of my lines I can only suggest that you verify all information. Is this part of the Downingtown, PA, Downing line? There are Downing/Millers there. They were Quakers. There were also Quaker settlements in Washington County, IN, so it could be that line. There is a web site for that Downing line you might want to check: Website for Downingtown Downings, listed as Devonshire Downings: http://members.aol.com/RDown3657/index.html Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

I'm looking for background on Elizabeth Downing, b.1823 in TN, married Volentine McMellon January 27, 1843 in Madison Co, TN, and died probably in McNairy Co around 1855-1860. Thanks for any help! Jim
Looking for descendants of Harrison DOWNING, b. 1814 in ME, d. before 1900. He married Jane GRAHAM, dau. of Daniel GRAHAM and Elizabeth ENTSMINGER. Harrison was probably the son of Samuel DOWNING, who left Maine in 1815 and traveled via raft with his family from Pittsburgh to Gallipolis, OH. Children of Harrison and Jane shown on censuses are Louisa b. 1839; Francis b. 1841, m. Ellen Edgington 1863; (ch) b. 1843, Honora Medora b. 1845; Mary Elizabeth b. 1847, m. W. R. Edgington 1864; Samuel b. 1849, d. 1874; (ch) b. about 1851/2; and Flora b. 1854. Louisa m. George SPENCER, and Honora Medora m. Edward WILSON. This family lived in Livingston Co., IL. I am compiling the Graham/Grayum genealogy and would like to include this family. Carol Austin cr_austin@prodigy.net

I got a notice today that this list will be placed on the Genealogy Resources on the Internet list [a huge list - details at http://members.aol.com/johnfl4246@aol.com ], also Cyndi's List, Rootsweb [no surprise there - they provide the space] and Vicky Lindsay's List. Things should pick up. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

the reference to john and mason co,ky threw me, i thought that was who you meant. i assume the downingtown section is correct, i have never researched it on my own, except for the william who was in hopewell and later highland co., oh. her version on timothy is probably about 75% correct, more for what isn't there. will write down address of downing name forum next time i visit, joe >Why, Neil and I's John Downing, who else? Why, Neil and I's John Downing, who else? He's 1-1 in her book. <g> The Downingtown section I took with a grain of salt. Should I consider it valid? I have not compared her version of Timothy and family yet either. I've fired off a message to Ray Downing and will share the info I receive when I do. I don't know about the Downing name forum. Tell us how to find it. I have been to the site where your stuff on Timothy is. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
which John Downing are we talking about now, i think i am getting confused, actually i meant Cochran had a lot on the Downingtown,PA Downings. I haven't seen the Ray Downing mailing list, have you seen the Downing name forum, i have it bookmarked but don't have address handy, joe >You are acting like you believe Cochrane researched the John Downing line. ><g> She doesn't know where he came from -- thinks he is a RW veteran and we >know that guy is buried in Mason County, KY. > >Interestingly, the library here does have something on Downingtown but I >haven't found it, just saw it in the card file. > >Are you familiar with a Ray Downing who has a Downing mailing list? You are acting like you believe Cochrane researched the John Downing line. <g> She doesn't know where he came from -- thinks he is a RW veteran and we know that guy is buried in Mason County, KY. Interestingly, the library here does have something on Downingtown but I haven't found it, just saw it in the card file. Are you familiar with a Ray Downing who has a Downing mailing list? It didn't show up in any of my searches but someone sent me an address if interested. RW = Rev War, have you checked out the Downingtown bunch in Cochrane's book, no connection shown for what that is worth, joe >I knew about the Downings in the Hopewell meeting because I have another >line that goes there. I knew about the Downings in the Hopewell meeting because I have another line that goes there. I also have Calverts but they are documented and I haven't studied them. 'the two Chenoweth bros in western MD were in RW, so who knows.' What's RW? If we rule out the Timothy Downing connection there is always, for some of us, the John Downing line. it is always a possibility. there was a large Quaker Downing family in Downingtown, PA,but they seem to be pretty well documented and i have never found a connection. the quaker Hopewell meeting house in VA has the minutes in book form and the only downing i saw was from the Downingtown family. The Calverts had a Quaker connection and they were married into the Chenoweths, but the two Chenoweth bros in western MD were in RW, so who knows, joe >My grandfather said the Downings were Quakers from PA.
