Greetings from smoky Florida! I am new to the list and would like to share my Downing line. Hope someone recognizes it. Robert Bromley, b. 1845 in Essex Co., N.Y. OR Lincoln, Addison Co., Vt. was born as ROBERT DOWNING according to his CW Pension file. Based on Census data taken in Lewis, Essex Co., N.Y., probable siblings of Robert are: Willard, b. 1836 Clark, b. 1833 Marriette, b. 1832 Parents (lived in Lincoln, Addison Co., Vt.) Major Downing, b. Ma., d. 1855, Vt. Mother, unknown, died abt. 1851 The parents never appeared in NY with the children. There are probably 2 other children of Major Downing also. I have often wondered if this Joseph Downing married to Jemima Woodward is the brother of our Francis Downing married to Susannah Wells. People keep trying to link them up somehow. Joseph was born about 1748 and our Francis was born about 1726/1736. Because of an uncertainty about the exact date of Francis' birth, can't assume he might be another of Francis' sons. If anyone can help me with Francis Downing, I would appreciate it. Many researchers think he will belong in the Emanuel Downing line; we do to; but so far we can't find the right link. No, I just now tried some Downing web sites that were put on line. I don't know of any myself. Shodnett@aol.com
Thanks; I did connect; your home page is neat! Shodnett@aol.com

Cheryl, I tried three different web sites for Downing you recently sent out and I cannot connect with any of them. How do I do it? I get this message that says they do not exist or are not in the data base. Shodnett@aol.com
I listed in the genealogy forum on Compuserve too. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com

Welcome new members to the Downing list. If you have not already done so, please feel free to post a message giving us information about the Downings you seek. Maybe you can make a connection here. In a message dated 98-07-01 20:44:46 EDT, you write: << Another Downing specific spot on the internet is the Downing forum: http://www.genforum.com/downing >> oooops, excuse the previous, I double clicked on the wrong spot. Good tip on that site from Cheryl. It's worth mentioning that going to that site without the downing after the slash (i.e., http://www.genforum.com/) will allow you to enter any surname to go to a forum for that surname. I found a couple of cousins via another surname I was searching out thanks to the site. Ray Downing

Thanks for posting that, Cheyl. Glad to see we finally came up with the right formula for that other mailing list <vbg>!!! Ray Downing in Las Vegas

He is mentioned several times in Parson Woodforde's "Diary of a Country Parson". I suspect that Robert came into Norfolk as a young man looking for work, as I have not been able to trace his parents in the County of Norfolk. Ron Downing. -- rdowning@cix.co.uk --
Hi everyone, I just joined & this is my first posting. Does anyone have anything on this family: IMMIGRANT: Samuel Downing Jr. (16mar1824 Ireland - 07jul1904 SeaCliff, NY) married (1851? Ireland?) Letitia Sullivan (apr1827 Ireland - 17sep1908 Brooklyn, NY). 1. Sam & Letitia were from Ireland and probably married there. Sam's father was Samuel Downing Sr. Sam Jr. claimed to be of Scotch-Irish descent. Letitia's parents were Daniel Sullivan from Ireland and Mary Dyer who was born in England and later lived with her husband in Ireland. Sam & Letitia emmigrated to New York City around 1852. By 1867 Sam Jr. had opened his store: S. Downing & Son Dry Goods in downtown Brooklyn, NY. Letitia (Sullivan) Downing had a brother named Robert and possibly another one named John. She also had a younger sister named Elizabeth (1841 - ? ), born in Ireland, who married (25mar1871) Stewart Fitzgerald Delaney in Brooklyn. Children of Samuel & Letitia: 1 Samuel Downing III (jan1853 - 04jul1853) died at 317 Greenwich Street, Manhattan during the New York City Cholera epidemic of 1853. 2 Emiline "Emma" H. Downing (24apr1854 - 19mar1919) married (20oct1881) Theodore A. Butler (1855 - ? ). 3 Maria Downing ( ? - 25mar1855) 4 Mary J. Downing ( 1856 - ? ) 5 Robert Franklin Downing (apr1857 - 17aug1930) he was a Brooklyn Alderman. Never married, no children. 6 Samuel Downing III (1859 - 16mar1882) the 2nd child to have this name. 7 Maria Louise Downing (1858 - 16feb1926) married (24jul1889) to Thomas George Wooley of Jersey City, NJ. 8 Henry W. Downing ( dec1861 - 26sep1931) 9 Margaret Downing (1863 - ?) nothing is yet known of her except she was still alive in 1870. 10 Joseph Wesley Downing (jul1865 - 13mar1869) 11 Marcus Albert Downing Sr. (01may1866 - 08apr1943) married (1892) to Maria Antoinette Howell (25jul1864 - 17feb1928) 12 Florence D. Downing (mar1869 - 1929) married (19may1896) to William Howard Hanning (feb1869 - 27oct1924). 13 Minnie Adeline Downing ( jun1870 - 09may1912) Never married, no children. *Any* info at all would be *very* much appreciated. Hi, I just joined the list and I thought I would post my Downings to see if anyone is researching the same line. Mary and her son Thomas came from Kenmore Co., Kerry, Ireland when Thomas was a little boy (4 or 5). They came through NY and possibly stayed there for a little while before coming down south. They ended up in Savannah GA. It is my understanding that it is possible that Thomas may have opened a store with his brother, but I'm not sure about that. Thomas married Bridget Carmody from Kilrush Co., Clare, Ireland. They were married in NY. Is anyone researching this line, or can anyone help? Hi all -- I'm looking for the ancestry of Russell DOWNING, born about 1796 somewhere in New York. He died about 1878 in Ashtabula County, Ohio. Russell married, about 1820 in NY, Sallie __?__ who died about 1825 in Ohio. They had one child: Sally DOWNING, born 1822 in NY Russell married 2nd: Joanna HINCKLEY 21 June 1840 in Portage County, OH. Thanks for any assistance with this great-grandfather. There has been some, er, confusion over 'my' John Downing. For awhile someone had the DAR convinced he was the John Downing who served in the RW from the Ft. Pitt area. He isn't. Fortunately for us, John's wife Hannah Frakes does have ancestors. Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
