Just checked the Ancestry database of PA volunteers in the War of 1812. There were three Downings, all John. One was an Ensign, one a Pricate, one a 2nd Lt. There is NO further information. These include hundreds not in my direct line. Please feel free to e-mail me for a lookup. Recently I've been overwhelmed with new information, so a response may take a day or two. Hello Cheryle and all. I am descended from Desire Downing, born 20 Aug 1756; the daughter of Henry and Ann (Hakes) Downing of Stoningham Ct. Other children of Henry and Ann include: Henry,Mary, Eunice, John, David, and Anne who married Solomon Hakes 3rd, the brother of John Hakes who was the husband of Desire. Desire supposedly died in 1830 in NY. The other Downing family that I referred to earlier that lived in Delaware Co. Oh. were related to Timothy Downing. I just noticed also from reading the other queries, that there was another family from this side who also married into the Hakes. In my research, I have found that the Downings and Hakes were and still are Quakers. I would like to trade family information with any of the descendents of Henry and Ann, and would like to learn the connection between Timothy's line and Henry's. Thank You! Esther
Bambi, thanks for the welcome, my Downing ancestors lived in Port Carbon Borough, Schylkill Co., PA in 1870; Parker, Armstong Co., PA in 1880; Mannington, Marion Co., WV in 1900; Metz, Marion Co., WV in 1910. My 2ggrand- father George W. Downing was born in Rhode Island, abt. 1838. He married Frances E. Glenn in PA 1855. Their children were: 1. Mary Downing b: Abt. 1868 Pennsylvania 2. George Washington Downing, Jr. b: 15 Jun 1871 Pennsylvania d: 11 Sep 1919 Maricopa, Kern Co. CA .... m. Jessie May Hughes b: 05 May 1880 Aleppo, Greene Co. PA m: 1898 West Virginia ? d: 21 Jun 1954 Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo Co. CA 3. Frances Adelaide Downing b: Abt. 1875 Pennsylvania George Hughes Downing Springfield, MO
I note quite a few new subscribers. Please tell us which Downing[s] you are seeking. Hopefully someone on the list can help you. I am researching two lines. One descends from Timothy Downing of Maryland and goes to Logan County, IL, in the early 1840s. The other descends from John Downing of PA [we assume] and goes to Logan County, IL, in the late 1820s. In the late 1850s these two lines intermarried. Hi- Haven't posted my Downings as I haven't really gotten far enough back to seem to know enough. But here goes, I'll give it a try since I haven't found anything by just lurking. My husband ggrandfather was Samuel Fifield Downing 1820-1909 of Waits River or Williamstown, Vermont married to Mary P. Richardson 1822-1873 They had Oscar Vernon Downing b 1847 Williamstown, Vermont d 1918 married to Hannah Rhuey Sherman b 1849 Haverhill, New Hamshire d.1919 They had Nora Bertha Downing b. 7/23/1892 in Waits River, Corinth, Vermont who married Earle Arthur Woods b 7/4/1888 b. Bradford, Vermont. I can trace this Earle Arthur Woods, my husbands grandfather back 11 generations to Samuel Woods in Groton Mass 1636 But so far no luck with Downings, all Downings I find are in wrong state and I have so many other lines of my own, I haven't had time to really knuckle down on this. Thanks Bambi in Florida
Is anyone researching the sisters DESIRE and ANNA DOWNING who married into the HAKES line in NY during the late 1700's? (1776 through 1778) Desire and Anna were daughters of HENRY DOWNING of Stonington, Ct. There is also a family of Downings in Delaware County, Oh. that settled there during the same time period as my G/G/G Grandfather Nathan Hakes. Are these related? Esther
I recently had a chance to look at this CD subtitled 'The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies.' It includes the records of that name along with Dyer's highly respected Compendium, Fox's Regimental Losses, a user's guide to official records and an index to records edited by the National Archives. This is not inexpensive -- $70 plus shipping. It works on both PCs and Macs they say. It is searchable but not particularly intuitive. I THINK the average user would figure it out. They claim 9,000+ people own it. All of the records it contains are in the public domain and most can be found at larger libraries but, of course, nothing beats having them at home and nothing beats the speed of searching a CD, even if the search engine is not state of the art. It says there are 'extras' on the CD with Access or Dbase IV compatible databases with 'over 12,000 particular military activities' and 'a large listing of Fox's statistical data.' [How many people have Access or Dbase IV on their home computer?] Several records from these sources are already online at The Illinois Civil War Project. It contains regimental histories and other information [for Illinois -- I believe other states are doing similiar projects and there is also a national project]. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw IF your ancestor was an officer or otherwise caused notice [such as a private Samuel Downing who was murdered in Missouri] you may well find information by searching for that name. If you are interested it is published by Guild Press of Indiana, Inc. which is in Carmel. I was looking at the questions on the Downing forum and I see there is no response to my question regarding proof Timothy Downing was a Tory. Has anyone seen a list of Torys from the Revolutionary War anywhere online? Years ago in the Roots Forum on Compuserve there was a file listing [some? all?] Tories but I haven't seen anything like it since. Hello All Although Robert Downing is not *blood* relation, he was a part of my husband's family. In November of 1885 John Lautherboren from Denmark and my husband's gr. grandfather died in Philadelphia. He left two sons, John A. and Howard F. (my husband's grandfather) and a widow named Annie or Anna A. about age 51/52. Annie has been a problem. She was of Cherokee blood and at one time there existed a picture of Annie in full ceremonial dress, but no one seems to know what happened to it. About a year or so after the death of John, Annie married to a Robert Downing. We know nothing of Robert Downing. When Howard was about 14, (about 1889) he took the name of his stepfather and became Howard F. Downing. Later all his children were Downings, until in 1934, his son David (my husband's father) petitioned the Court of Honolulu, Hawaii to have his name changed back to Lautherboren. So, even though Robert was not a blood relation we would like to finally get to know him; to find out where he was from, who were his parents, if he had siblings, if he had been married before Annie, if he had children and of course see if we can learn any more about Annie. You can see from all the more progress we've made, that we are beginners and haven't gone very far. This one line has already involved the divorce and re- marriage of parents, name changes of the father, the grandfather and the great-grandfather, and the remarriage of the widow whose maiden name is never known. This all has been a challenge and any help will be greatly appreciated by the whole Lautherboren/Downing family. Thank you. Barb DB12251@aol.com
The list is fairly new. I don't believe there is an achive at this point. There's no need to worry about duplicate postings -- if you are looking for the same Downings as someone else that's a connection! You know which book says Jacob was born in Switzerland. His son Jacob married Sarah, daughter of James and Nancy Gardener Downing. James and Nancy Gardener Downing as parents of Sarah and her brother John is still in the iffy category in my mind. However, Sarah was the sister of my John. There are some problems but I think we could straighten them out. Could you have the originator contact me? Cheryl Rothwell clrothwell@mindspring.com
