The Bureau of Land Management has an interesting web site with old land records at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ Eventually it will include all states east of the Mississippi. For now it includes a dozen or so. I found my Samuel Downing's purchases in Ohio there. You can view or download a .tiff of the actual land record which [at least in those I saw] contain the ancestor's signature. The files are photo negatives so you'll probably want a program that allows you to reverse this to print out -- then you'll have a nice copy of the actual record. I too am new to this group. I have been researching the surname DONNING which is sometimes spelled DOWNING. Probably confusion from oral spelling of name as "D - O - double N - I - N - G". When my dad first spelled it for me, I thought he said "D - O - W - N - I - N - G" so I could understand others confusing it <grin>. This family is from Belfast, Ireland. Have traced them back as early as 1845. Is anyone else pursuing this ellusive Irish family or have you encountered anyone else pursuing this surname as you've researched the DOWNING surname? Thanks! Iris :) Tim & Iris Read reads@compusmart.ab.ca

Jim I'm interested to see that you're connected to both Downings and McMillans. These are my 2nd great grandparents: Volentine McMellon married Elizabeth Downing on January 27, 1843 in Madison County, Tennessee. Do we have any connections? Jim
Yes, I think I did both of those things. Sue
Were your Downing ancestors Campbellites, members of the Disciples of Christ/First Christian Churches? Most people have some of a variety of religions in their line. Check out this web site: http://www.ag.uiuc.edu/~mcmillan/Restlit/States >From there you can pick a state and then a county within the state. My GG Uncle emigrated to Canada in 1857, settling in Dereham, Ontario by 1871 census. I am interested in tracing any of his descendants to help me solve a family riddle concerning his younger brother Charles. I have extensive data that I would be happy to share concerning my Downing/Fortescue lines, original family letters and photographs. Janina Riley, Yinnar , Victoria AUSTRALIA jankeith@net-tech.com.au
Since I'm not absolutely sure my John Downing is from PA this doesn't surprise me. Thanks. Ray, just for the heck of it, will you check for a John Downing [c 1760 ?PA - 1838 IL], married Hannah Frakes [1766 - 1842 IL] do Robert Frakes and Mary Dawson? There has always been a story in the family that the Downings were Quakers way back. It is the only story that I haven't been able to confirm altho, since the others were true I assume it was also. Closest is 1742, and no marriage to Frakes. I wouldn't give up on it, though, as I don't know how complete these records are that I have. There's a thing called the "Hinshaw Records" which, I believe, is more complete. If you could find those in a library, it would be worth a look. Ray

Illinois lists Civil War vets on the Secretary of State's web site. The USGENWEB Civil War project is growing so hopefully they'll all be online sooner or later, either from the state or through volunteers on this project. I know of a couple Downing ancestors who served in the War of 1812 but AFAIK they were living in Ohio at the time.
