Cheryl, Where in Iowa are you searching? Are you looking for descendants of Joseph b. 1748, MD. There are two branches of these Downings living in Guthrie Co., Iowa that claim to be distant cousins to each other. I have traced both back, one to Joseph and the other to Mary that had a twin sister Elizabeth that married James McClelland. I will be glad to share what I have. Guthrie is the same Co. that my Williams two daugters came with the Miller family in mid 1800's. My Grand-father came to Guthrie Co., Ia. and lived with his aunts. The families I mentioned descended from Joseph 1748 and my Grand-father knew each other but didn't know if they connected. So far I have not proven that they connect. Ruby Waugh, Iowa
That is a great story Ray! I did that one Sunday not so long ago with another line. I knew the woman's name. I knew she was cousin of my grandfather but younger. I knew she was not young but if she were alive she'd be in Iowa. I made a couple of inquiries on the appropriate IAGenWeb site, got some information, looked up names in the 4-11 phone book and called her. She was out but she called back [late, not thinking of the time difference]. She didn't have much though. She researched her grandfather, a deadend pretty quick, and never looked at her grandmother, an excellent line. So I ended up passing along quite a bit and not getting anything. But it showed me there was nothing to get from that branch. Check. Did you buy Gregath's books? I have the first one -- think I paid $25 -- and wouldn't buy another. Anna told me she gave her printing press to her daughter. That was a couple years ago. [I met her and the daughter a couple times in the 70s.] Someone else told me they are working on a volume 3. None of those are mentioned in the data I have. The Downings in my husbands line all came to Wichita Falls, Texas from Lexington, Kentucky. His dad moved to Lawton, Ok in the l930's to practice medicine. I do not have Gregath Publishing Company e-mail address. She & her mother has 2 books on DOWNINGS and I think Oklahoma Downings. I know she has Downings that were along the MO & KS state line down to OK. If you have The Genealogical Helper she has ads in there. Her office phone is 1-918-542-4148. If some one has here e-mail would you send it to me. Cuz'n Don >I've noted several people have Oklahoma Downings so I was hoping for a >connection. I probably told you that some of our Downings lived a few years in Indian Territory, (OK) but as far as I know, none of them were killed there. Suehodnett@aol.com> Sue, I'm researching the James Downing family of Lawrence county, MO and pursuing a connection to the Cherokees through Mary Carlisle Bell Downing. I've found one descendant named Lacy that lived in the territory in Oklahoma. However, I haven't been about to connect them to any of the many Downing-Lacy Dawes rolls. There are quite a few Downings listed in NARA NAIL database. I suppose you are familiar with that. I'm now trying to find the names of the Lacy children to see if any of them applied for citizenship. In a message dated 98-08-23 13:31:29 EDT, you write: << GGgrandfather died in the Civil War and his brother went off to Oklahoma [probably in that order]. >> Yeah, likely....Oklahoma (Indian Territory) wasn't much settled until well after the Civil War was over. I presume you've obtained gt gdpa's Civil War records from the National Archives...they make for fascinating reading. I had a similar situation. I knew all about gt grandpa and his Civil War record (he served all four years and survived, though slightly wounded)....but I couldn't find out a thing about his little brother, Thomas. All I had was a one line notation in "Genealogy of the Palmer - Trimble Families", "Address: Renfrew, Oklahoma". Searching census rolls pinned it down to Medford, Grant county, OK. A check in that county on the USGenWeb site revealed that his name was on a memorial wall in Medford, dedicated to the 1893 pioneers of the "Cherokee Strip" land run. So when I drove to Kansas to search for other family gravesites last May, I detoured to Medford to photograph the wall and his name. Well, Medford is a sleepy little town, despite being the county seat. On returning home, I went to the computer white pages and found four Downing families located in Medford. Dare I write to them to see if they were related to Thomas? Well, all it would be is a little effort and some postage, and enclose a SASE for a hopeful response, so I did it, not really expecting a reply. Bingo, Cheryl. The great grandson of Thomas Ellsworth Downing wrote back, enclosed the entire family descendancy, complete with birth/death/marriage dates and locations, along with -- wow! -- an 8 x 14 photograph of Thomas, his wife, and his eight children that was taken in 1915!!!! Yes, I have framed the photo! He mentioned that he and his wife occasionally visit Las Vegas, so I'm looking forward to their next trip to buy them the finest steak dinner I can find in town. To Joe, I ran off and studied your Downing pages. The two Williams that could have been my man married the wrong women. One was William, son of William and Melinda Barton. He m. Deborah McGee. The other was William, son of Sarah and Mescheck that m. Mary, b. 1817. My William b. KY 1800-04 1st m. Nancy Petty, 2nd m. Nancy McClelland. As I was going through my papers, I found a query that I copied off last spring that might me of interest to someone. WASHINGTON CO. MD QUERY; James Downing (1729-1762) m. Susanna (Possibly Parker) in Washington Co. (then Frederick). Sons, James, Robert and Timothy b. Washington Co., MD probably between 1749-1755. Family left for PA about 1755. Possibly to Cumberland (Now Fayette ) Co., PA, later to Washington Co., PA. By James G. Widmer (widmer@infinet.com) The above James has to be the same one living in Mason Co., KY. Also Washington Co., MD. is the same Co. as Timothy b. about 1742 d. 1799 was from. Am I correct. Could they be brothers? Also, has anyone heard of a Downing family that the parents were killed by Indians that invaded their home. The story goes that the parents hid the children in the cellar and the parents were killed. The children were farmed out to relatives, friends and neighbors and they lost track of each other. This story has come down through our family that it happened to eather my William or possibly a generation before him. Ruby Waugh, jakec@netins.net
I've not had good results with the Downing Family Historical Society -- I sent TWO letters [once with an SASE] to Ross Downing in response to his ad in the Genealogical Helper. Neither time did he [or anyone else] respond. I got no help. I got no answer. He kept the data I sent right along with the SASE. See if I'm dumb enough to do that again. No thanks, to the Downing Historical Society. As far as I'm concerned, his ad is a sham -- out to get your information with no return of assistance. Ray, Hello! I have that book on George Downing, too. Now that you mentioned it, I believe that I did hear that Ross was ill. Suehodnett
I don't know if the Downing Family Hist. Society is still going or not. As you say, I have had nonotice to renew, and no newsletter lately. Sue Hodnett
I have had very good response from Ross Downing. I think that he is not doing the job he had in the DFHS. I have not received a notice to renew so maybe the Society is not still going. I understand how you feel after he did not answer your letter. I would feel the same way. Does anyone know if the Society is still going. They were have problems getting all their Offices filled. Colleen, As a second thought, what Downings are you looking for? Suehodnett@aol.com
Colleen, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with the Downing Family Historical Association. I don't know about that particular ad you saw, but the society is not a sham. I received some information from them that helped me along my way, but true, they didn't answer every question I had for them. However, they did attempt to help me. Suehodnett@aol.com

Perhaps that explains the lack of news from that group of late. When I joined that group over a year ago, he sent me his very thorough book on the Emmanuel Downing line (which isn't mine, sigh). The only flaw with this hefty volume is that it is NOT indexed. Ray Downing in Las Vegas
I assume everyone is aware of the Downing Family Historical Society of America, the last known address for the president was: Elsie Korthas, 176 St. Rte. 49, Cleveland,NY 13042. The membership chairman is: Ross W. Downing , 2400 Pleasant Grove Rd., Lansing,MI 48910. The Society publishes a newsletter and altho their emphasis has been on New England Downings, they accept and publish info on all Downing families.
I trust if you find some connections here you'll share them with us. There are several folks who descend from Timothy Downing around here who would like to know. Inquiring minds and all that.
