A REAL Downing genealogist! Thanks, Cheryl. [My given name is Sheryl!] When we were in Logan County in the mid-70s Dalen and Sandy Shellhammer gave us a grand tour of Morrow-Shoup-Downing country and shared information. So, you think there is a question about John Downing's Rev War service? Ann Gregath organized a Downing dedication at John Downing's grave at B-T Cemetery in 1977. It is she who stated his Rev War service, I believe. And isn't she in your branch? We corresponded at one time, about 1980. Time flies, and I have not done Downing research in over 10 years. It has been fun to get "plugged in" again! Thanks to you! Sherry
Dalen Shellhamer is a descendant of Delilah Downing. After her first husband, my gggrandfather William Nelson Downing, died in the Civil War she remarried to a Shellhammer. Dalen and Sandy know just about everything about the southern part of Logan County. The DAR stopped taking that 'proof' on John Downing many years ago. The John Downing she proved is buried in Mason County, KY, well accounted for. Yes, Gregath organized a dedication at John Downing's grave. I was there. That night the DAR marker disappeared. A new one was obtained and it was cemented down so I guess it is going to stay even though he's out. Gregath is a descendant of John Downing. I think she's a descendant of Robert too but I don't know how...and I'm not interested enough to look it up. <g> Sheryl Jane right? That's me. I'm a descendant of one of those three children of Robert and Jane Morrow Downing [Delilah] who married three children of Samuel D. Downing [William Nelson], all in Logan County, IL. While no one has ever found a connection it is odd that both Downings lines would end up in same area of Logan County, IL, even along the same Creek [Salt] at the same time, early on when there were very few residents in the area. Both lines had spent some years in Ohio although not in the same county. To the best of my knowledge, no one has found a marriage for James Downing and Nancy Gardner nor proved they were John's parents. Further, there is no proof that John Downing served in the Revolutionary War. He may have but he is not the John Downing claimed in the Gregath book. A couple of his children supposedly served in the War of 1812, including Robert, but I've never actually verified that. William Nelson died in the Civil War and several of Delilah's brothers and cousins served. This is verified. >Sherry, > I seem to remember reading something on that James and John Downing now. >What is your Downing line? Suehodnett@aol.com > > >==== DOWNING Mailing List ==== > > Sue: My husband is a descendant of John Downing, ca. 1762-1838, of PA, OH and Logan Co., IL, and his wife, Hannah Frakes, ca. 1766-1842. This family is well-documented for most of the children: John who married Tabitha Johnson and died in Madison Co., OH [MCO]; Josiah who married Elizabeth Jones MCO 1811 and died in War of 1812; Sarah who married Nicholas Moore in MCO; Robert who was born at Woodbridge, Huntingdon Co PA 1793 & married Jane Morrow 1819 MCO & went to Logan Co IL 1822; William and Nathaniel who died young; James who married Ruth Morrow 1825 Sangamon Co IL and died in Sumner Co KS; Hannah who married James Morrow in Sangamon Co IL and lived Logan Co IL; Mary Jane "Polly" who was 2nd wife of John Vandeventer. The question of the parents of John Downing is not answered. I believe he was born on or near the PA-VA border near the Monongahela River now in Washington Co PA and went to Ross Co OH about 1800. A large family tree held by my husband's grandmother stated John Downing's parents were James Downing and Nancy Gardner. This has not been proved as far as I know. It seems clear that John Downing had a sister Sarah who married Jacob Shoup in 1802 Huntingdon Co PA, and maybe a brother. Down through the generations there are a number of Downing-Morrow-Shoup marriages. Three children of Robert H. and Jane [Morrow] Downing married three children of Samuel D. Downing, the son of George Downing, grandson of Timothy Downing, of another family. The relationship of these two distinct Downing groups remains unclear beyond these marriages. This is what makes this fun, isn't it? Sherry Kaseberg
I really enjoy reading the posts for the Downings, however, I've not seen any postings for Downings in OH, especially northeastern Ohio. The Downing Family in OH that I'm researching would have settled there in what is now Lake County OH, in the early 1800's from CT. Phineas DOWNING was born in CT in 1804 and moved to Geauga/Lake County prior to 1825. I know nothing of his family--parents, brothers, sisters, etc. He did move to Michigan for a few years, but later moved back to Lake County, OH where he spent the remainder of his life. He died in 1876. There were other Downings in that part of OH at the time he was there, but I know nothing about them. Any information would be most helpful and appreciated. Thank you. Barbara
Sherry, I seem to remember reading something on that James and John Downing now. What is your Downing line? Suehodnett@aol.com
Sherry, one glaring mistake in Greagath's work is the birthdate for Francis and Susannah's son, Richard. We put him being born iabout 1755/56. One work says he was Assistant to a surgeon if the Rev. War. That was 1776. He couldn't be that and be born in 1777. Another piece of research would suggest he might be the firstborn of Francis and Susannaah. It could be, since he is not listed in the 1776 census of Harford Col, MD. Also, one researcher suggests William might be a younger brother of Francis, or a nephew, and Rebecca would be his wife. (Rebecca Cromwell). Francis and Susannah had to marry very young, in any case. He must have been about 17, and she probably wasn't that old. I have hunted high and low for more information on Powhatan, or Puck. He is a hard one to find. There are three Powhatan's in his line: him, his son Powhatan, born 1822 in KY, (brother to my direct descendent, Morean, born 1816, KY), and his grandson, Powhatan born about 1850, found on a census of Tulare Co., CA, with his family in 1900. I can't find much on Morean either. We were spelling his name Marine for awhile; but a lady from Colorado helped us there: it is spelled Morean and he married Lydia Ann Brunk; we have most of his children now; Morean and Lydia were married in 1843 in Davies County, MO, and were still there is 1850, with three of their children. But after that, I haven't found him again. Suehodnett@aol.com
Sherry, One more question: was the Francis Downing listed as being a war pensioner, in the military in 1746, or born in 1746? This is the one Henrietta would have applied for the pension. Again, thanks for your help. This is really confusing me. Suehodentt@aol.com
Sherry, Thank you for the information. I have seen a lot of it; but what I am needing most I guess, is the assuarnace that there is just the one Francis Downing; not two of them. I know most researchers claim there is just one. But one gal turned up for me an interesting piece of information seeming to point out that Susannah, his first wife, did not die until 1782; I believe Francis and his second wifeHenrietta, if she was his second wife, were having children by 1776. That is, is Susannah was actually Susannah Wells Downing; she is mentioned in a will of Richard Wells, her father; also mentions one son, Richard. Have you seen this? Sue
Hello Robb, Yes, the lady that told me about Mary and Elizabeth (twins) was the daughter-in-law of Mary's direct lineage. Her Mother-in-law was researching this line. When she found out Mary had those children and no husband, she called her Irish Shanty Mary and destroyed all her research. All I got for information was what this lady remembered reading about in her Mother-in-laws research before it was destroyed. She said they were in Va. and somewhere in Ind. but couldn't remember the county. Wherever Elizabeth and James McClelland lived, Mary went too. She said Mary lived in a house on the back of their farm or property. She made no mention of S. Carolina. There are McClellands in Montgomery Co., KY. That is the county that Dennis and James Downing, Dennis's father came from to Henry Co., Ind. early 1800's and Dennis's Mother-in-law was a McClelland that married a McCormick. Also my William Downing b. around 1800 was living in Henry Co., Ind. in the same twp. as Dennis and James with his wife Nancy McClelland. There was an Alexander McClelland living in Montgomery Co., KY. that would have been the age to be Nancy's Father. I believe that Abraham McClelland from Scott Co., KY was the father of Alexander McClelland of Montgomery Co. KY. I will keep you informed if I find more of this puzzle. Downing's Station was settled by James and John Downing, Matthias Mounce, Samuel Shelton, John Mounce and Alexander Collier Sr...near or at the Fork church in 1779...the road from Harrodstown to Boonsboro went by this station by way of Three Forks of Sugar Creek. Finley's goal was to document movements of two men named James Downing, one of them a Rev. War veteran. This is a well written and documented work. Yes Sue I saw it, thanks. To Robb Russon. I believe that Elizabeth Downing from Washington Co., Ind. was the daughter of Mary Downing. Mary was the twin sister of Elizabeth Downing b. 1783 in Va. or Ireland. I was told by a lady that was descended from Mary that she was not married and always lived on the same farm with her sister and James McClelland. Her children I know of were: Preston, James Madison, Joseph and Elizabeth. I have been trying to find out who Elizabeth and James McClelland's children were and who Mary and Elizabeth's parents were. My ancestor, William Downing b. 1800-04 KY married Nancy McClelland and they lived at one time in Henry Co., Ind. I am trying to find out who her parents were. In Washington Co., Ind. land grants is listed the following McClellands. James, purchased land in 1838. Charles, purchased in 1838. William, purchased in 1839. John J. purchased in 1839 and Benjamine, purchased in 1845 and 52. Some of Mary's family live in Guthrie Center, Iowa and some of Joseph Downings (b. 1748 and m. to Jemima Woodward) family live at Casey, Iowa, Guthrie Co. Letha Moss, a descendent of Mary from Guthrie Center told me that they were distant cousins of the Casey, Iowa Downings. Ruby Waugh, from Guthrie Co., Iowa
the Harrison Downing in Pike Co. below was the son of William Downing & Malinda Barton, wound up in Vernon Co, Wisc. I have no way of telling who the descendants of William Austin's siblings are, since none of us have any records of any of their children. Do you know?
