This is in reference to the Ohio Downings, specifically the ones in Delaware Co. Oh. Joe Downing would probably have more info on this line and I hope he will answer it. I am a descendent of Felty Wheeler and Mary Ann Hakes. Mary's son Madison had a son named Joseph who married a Dora (Spech) Richmond. Dora's mother was a Downing, and originated from the Md line..This verified by Downing Newsletter. In checking the web, I have found in the Downing Forum, a reference to another Hakes who married into the same Downing line. EXCEPT, this Hakes line was from James Loyal Hakes. My Hakes line originated from John and Desire (Downing) Hakes. Joe, are both these lines connected? Desire's father was Henry and Ann (Hakes) Downing. This line has often intrigued me, and I would love to have a definite answer. Esther
There's an internet site that has the DAR records (Ancestry.com), but it's a fee-required site. As I recall, I paid something like twenty bucks for a 3-month enrollment membership, and I got my money's worth out of it. I believe also that all the Family History Centers of the LDS have the volumes of books. My local FHC has them, but I don't recall how they are indexed. NOTE: I have no connection with Ancestry.com except as a fees-paying member. Ray Downing

Perhaps I should look at the Virginia Downings for a Francis. This is the line of Lila Beal of Georgetown, KY in 1938. Makes me wonder if her work was preserved somewhere...a KY library, publication, genealogical society...or if she was a DAR. Fannie Aldridge Bell was DAR #92665 on this line...perhaps in the DAR Patriot Index. Clues and work for somebody! Sherry

This is from Rootsweb and is applicable to all postings to a Rootsweb mailing list. I'd say it is an excellent suggestion for any mailing list for the reasons stated. RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. Let me mention here that it is always a good idea to check out the USGenWeb sites for the counties involved. I know -- I have posted on several and never heard a word. OTOH, I posted a question on one site on a Sunday and by Monday I had all the information I needed and more. By the end of the week a guy in Colorado had mailed me hard copies of the information! Bottom line is you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain by posting. In general the web site coordinators are not required to update the query page more than once a month but most update at least once a week, probably on the weekends. Many of these volunteers hold down full time jobs, have families, etc.. so weekends are their best time. [I try to post as soon as I get them but it doesn't always happen.] You can always check to see if your query has been posted. Roots-L also has a clearing house for people searching for various surnames. That list comes out once a month. My surnames are on it and I get a lot of queries, did find one piece of information that way. The information on Ohio Downings in the War of 1812 is interesting but... Three of John Downing's children served from Ohio - John [son] served from May 1-December 12, 1812. Josiah enlisted with his brother John and was KIA July 20, 1812. Robert enlisted in 1813. I see a John and a Robert, no Josiah, on that list. Guess I'm going to have to get that record. Josiah left a widow but no children so I suppose it is irrelevant but... Searching for any descendants of Francis DOWNING, 1736 of Yorkshire, England. Also researching NORRIS; looking for descendants of David Norris born 1800 in the York district of South Carolina. He is the son of Simon William Norris, born 1776 Ashe County, NC. David married Rachel.........had twelve children: Mary, Robert Abner, John, David Michael, Lucinda, James Avery, Adaline, Sarah, Malinda, Thomas, Thursey, and Elizabeth. My direct line comes down thorugh John, who was born in 1826. He married an Elizabeth.......... Anyway, is there anyone who recognizes these people and belong to any of them? Suehodnett@aol.com
Sherry, I should get my thoughts altogether, but it is a hectic morning here; what is DAR? How do I get to the DAR Patricotic Index? Suehodnett@aol.com
Sherry, I don't know what that means either: came to America on the RETURN. I just assumed that the date he returned to England was 1624; but it is worded strangely. Sue
Sherry, I believe it is true that a Francis Downing came over here about 1624. His father is a John Downing, who died in 1623. Somewhere I saw a copy of this man's will: it mentions a Francis, Richard, and an Abigail. I suspect after his father died, and the estate was settled, then this Francis took off for America, and then returned to England. My idea only, but I have nothing better to offer; this Francis, of course, cannot be the one said to be born in 1736; unless there was a bad mixup in the dates, and surely someone would have caught that and corrected it by now. But at the time I saw a copy of the early Francis' father's will, I was new to this and didn't copy down the source. Should you come across anything more on this subject, I sure wish you'd let me know it, too. Suehodnett@aol.com
Anyone tracing a Capt. William Downing of Northumberland Co Va 1600-1700?
Sherry, I forgot to add that his second marriage took place in Ky. Do you research in that state, too? Susannah died somehwere between 1775/6 and 1782. Or else he divorced her one. Suehodnett@aol.com
Sherry, Yes and no. But if I assume there is only one francis Downing of about 1736, it does. My problem is just being sure there is only one. If so, he married twice 1) Susannah (Wells); 2) Henrietta Viley. Which would be alright; I just want to clear up that question; and as one person suggested, I might be letting county lines confuse me. The counties in question were all one at one point and seperated later. Sue
For Sherry, I believe the family line of Francis Downing, born 1736 of Yorkshire, had some descendents who moved into Ohio. Will check my notes as soon as I can and see who exactly it was and post the info if you like. Suehodnett@aol.com
