If you get the newsletter from Ancestry.com you won't need to read further. If not, here is some useful information on available land records. >From Ancestry Daily News for September 17, 1998: ======================================================= GUIDE TO U.S. FEDERAL RECORD REQUESTS - PART 4 <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= LAND ENTRY FILES - NATF FORM 84 ================================ Information Contained: (Extracted from "The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy," Revised, edited by Loretto D. Szucs and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking) Homestead case files are richer in genealogical information than the cash, credit, and bounty-warrant files. A homestead final certificate file usually includes: ~ The homestead application ~ Certificate of publication of intention to complete the claim ~ Final proof of homesteading (testimony from the claimant and his or her witnesses) ~ Final document authorizing issuance of a patent. ~ A certified copy of the naturalization papers, if needed for the application, may be present. The final proof documents give: ~ The claimant's name ~ Age ~ Post office address ~ Describe the tract and the house ~ Date the establishment of residence ~ Give the number and relationship of the members of the family, and note citizenship ~ Crops ~ Acres under cultivation ~ Testimony of witnesses. The granting of military bounty land in the United States to encourage enlistments or reward previous service began in colonial times, but its legislative heyday was from 1788 to 1855, though claims were still being received by the federal government in the 1960s. Genealogists find bounty-land records especially attractive because they serve the dual role of locating persons in time and place and of proving military service. Applications sometimes contain a wealth of information, especially when heirs claimed lands. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Request NATF Form 84 To request Form 84 (limit 6 per order), write to: National Archives and Records Administration Attn: NWCTB 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20408-0001 Or Email: inquire@nara.gov ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Information required to request General Land Entry Files: For the following states, indexes exist: Alabama Alaska Arizona Florida Louisiana Nevada Utah (before 1908) Information required: ~ Name of land entryman (settler, patentee, etc.) ~ State in which the land was located ~ Approximate date of entry Additional information may be helpful, particularly with common names. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the following states, there are no indexes available: California Colorado Idaho Iowa Kansas Montana Nebraska New Mexico North Dakota Oklahoma Oregon South Dakota Washington Wyoming (before 1908) Information required: ~ Name of land entryman (settler, patentee, etc.) ~ State in which the land was located ~ Approximate date of entry ~ Legal description of the land OR the type of file, the name of the land office that issued the file, and the land entry file number. This is what I have found so far: William Downing immigrated to Virginia from Bristol, England in 1651 to Northumberland County. Ships records in Bristol were destroyed in a riot in 1839. Captian William Downing is mentioned in the Northumberland Co Records on Jan 20 1655 when John Edwards assigned his interest in a patent for land to said Downing. On Jan 27 1668 " Willaim Downing of Great Wicocomoco River ,planter," deeded property to his children as follows: To his eldest son, William and to his son John 600 acres of land up the north side of horse-path and bounding east upon Wm.Widly and west upon Richard Nelms. Two Cows to( Name indecipherable), to his daughter Mary Downing, one cow. Witness William Jones. About this time Capt William Downing married Margret ?? June 7 1669. The court ordered that provisions for all Wicimico Parish levied for the Potomac Fort be delivered at the house of Capt William Downing Sr. On the same Day Capt Downing was sworn as Justice of the Court. This office he held until his time of death in 1683. Capt Downings will was dated Feb 9 1682 and was probated by Mrs Margret Downing his executrix, in Sept or Oct 1683 but was burned in 1710. His Children were William,Thomas,Mary,a daughter? and by his second marriage Charles. Mrs Margret Downing widow of Capt Downing married second Mr Edward Typton and had a son Joesph Typton.
Halbert's, the highly questionable 'genealogical' publishing company out of Bath, OH, has a new one. Using the name 'U.S. Information Bureau' and a Washington, DC, address they are promoting a new 'book' with all the Civil War veterans with YOUR surname. In the past the 'books' have been copies of names from phone books. Since this is not possible in the case of Civil War veterans I'm not sure how they are working it but it likely this is yet another questionable 'book.' Various national genealogical societies are warning their members. A word to the wise... Oops! Lack of careful proofreading I wrote that William Downing, brother of Samuel, was born about 1772. Sorry! That was the approximate birth date of their father who was also named William Downing. The younger William was born in 1777 according to the date given at his death. Bob
Friends and Cousins, For months I've been eavesdropping on the Downing group, hoping to find someone researching my own brand of Downings. Finally I read something by "joe" and a response by "Sherry" on Samuel Downing, born in Lancaster County about 1784, married in Ohio CO., WV, and ending up in Ohio. I'd descended from his younger brother William (son of William). William was also born in Lancaster CO., PA (about 1752) and moved with his family to Ohio CO., WV where his father, William, purchased land on Glenn's Run just a few miles north of the city of Wheeling on April 5, 1803. Old William died there in 1813 (I noticed your notes said 1812) and left a most interesting will which ran to several pages instructing his family on matters mundane, moral, and monetary. His wife, Mary, and another son, Alexander, had preceded him in death and were buried on the property which he calls a "plantation" in his will. He and his wife raised 13 children. On November 30, 1809, William, the son, married Elizabeth Milligan, daughter of John and Sarah Robinson Milligan-formerly of Berkeley CO., VA. William and Elizabeth moved across the Ohio River to Belmont CO., OH, where they raised a family of two boys and five girls. One of the girls, Mary Elizabeth, eloped with a Baptist preacher named John Davis and were married in Wheeling. She was my grandmother's grandmother. "Sherry" mentioned the 1820 law suit between William Stringer and the brothers, William, Robert, and John Downing. I'd love to know what that was about. Stringer was a brother-in-law, having married their sister Jennet. William eventually drifted west. He and his wife spent several years with his daughter, Hannah, in Lafayette, IN, where William died and is buried. His widow, Elizabeth, moved on to Chicago but I lost track of her there. Here's the bottom line: I'd love to be in contact with anyone researching this family. I'd like to identify the connection of this family with other Downings in Lancaster CO., PA. I'd like to know more of William's parents-in-law, John and Sarah Robinson Milligan. I have a transcript of John Milligan's testimony as to his Revolutionary War service, but I know next to nothing about his wife. Any Downing-rooters out there researching this connection? Bob
Thank-you for the Capt. William Downing family information.

hey, just found a family sheet for the Samuel Downing family born 1785 Lancaster Co,Pa and died 7 Oct 1823 in Deleware Co,OH, he married Elizabeth Giffen. They had several children born in Ohio Co,WVA or Deleware Co,OH but none married a Hakes. However I would assume that any Downing in that county during that time frame was connected to this family. Samuel was son of Wm Downing and Mary, and had numerous siblings several of which wound up in Ohio and IN. joe
