My earliest ancestor is Francis Downing, Jr. We just learned from another lady of our line that his father was Francis Downing, Sr., I presume of Yorkshire, as that is where Francis Jr was born. Can anybody help me with this? Have you seen a Francis Sr, with a son Francis, born 1736 in Yorkshire? Or a Francis of 1736 with a father Francis, as I say, presumbably from Yorkshire? Thank you so very kindly for your reply . I shall write to Ms. Phebeus and hopefully be on the way to a breakthrough! jbpnomad@aol.com
Hi! I wish I knew of some connection to or info about the Downings/Wells you mention but unfortunately I don't. These Downings are so elusive ! Thanks for your reply. John B. Pugh jbpnomad@aol.com
To JB, concerning DOWNINGS in Alabama: I also have a DOWNING/WELLS connection. But mine is much earlier. I have a Francis Downing married to Susannah Wells, daughter of Richard. They would have married about 1750. They are from Yorkshire, England. Have you heard of these WELLS? They were in MD for quite a few years, then most of the family moved down into KY. My first Downing was Louisa Welton Downing who married George Perry of Bradford Cty, PA. Both born in PA around 1846. Her father was Stephen Downing b. abt. 1808 in VT. He married a Mary S. from PA abt. 1819. His mother was Abigail [ ] Downing b. 1779 in CN. I think he was from Orange County VT, where there were a lot of Downings at the time. He may come from a family of brothers, Richard, Robert, Rufus, Thomas B., and Gideon dowining if Abigail's time period. Anyone have info on this VT to PA family or a reliable descendany source of the mentioned VT Downing family. Thanks for the help. Hal Bright Phoenix, AZ
