    1. [DOWNING-L] Western PA Information CD
    2. Cheryl Rothwell
    3. This is from Dick Eastman's Genealogy Newsletter. Since a lot of ancestors lived in this area I though some might be interested even though it is not inexpensive. - Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society Quarterly on CD-ROM GenQuest, Inc. has announced a new CD-ROM disk for both Windows and Macintosh will soon be available. You can order it now for a discounted "pre-publication offer." Here is the announcement: The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society Quarterly, volumes 1-24 And Other Select Publications for Macintosh And Windows The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and GenQuest, Inc. of Pittsburgh, PA are excited to announce the availability of volumes 1-24 of the society's publication. Also included are all 7 volumes of Allegheny county naturalizations, 1798-1906 and 3 volumes of Lists and Indexes to the Legal, Court and Municipal Records of Allegheny County. As members we now have the opportunity to be able to search all these volumes quicker and more comprehensively than ever before. Especially, the quarterlies for which there is no comprehensive index. CONTENTS The Quarterly Issues of the quarterlies contain marriage records, family histories, church membership rolls, church histories, marriage and death notices from area newspapers, family Bible records, land records, tax lists, cemetery transcriptions, articles pertaining to Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War combatants and PA regiments, etc. from the various counties comprising Western Pennsylvania: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Blair, Butler, Cambria, Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Crawford, Elk, Erie, Fayette, Forest, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mckean, Mercer, Somerset, Venango, Warren and Westmoreland. The Naturalizations These volumes contain the names of the 60,960 emigrants, the date filed in the Prothonotary's office of Allegheny county, the country or kingdom of birth, date of declaration of Intent and Petition, the date of final papers and the sponsor. In some cases the residence at the time of final naturalization is given along with the port and date of entry and the age of the emigrant. Legal, Court and Municipal Records These volumes contain abstractions or lists compiled from many different record groups, which though obscure are important. One of the best examples are the naturalizations from the mayors court in volume two, which supplement county's early records. Examples of other records in these publications are Allegheny City Arrest records, 1891-1896, Births and Deaths in Allegheny County Home, 1885-1904, Births and Deaths in the Allegheny City Home, 1871-1904, etc. What can you do with this database? * You can use it on a Windows or Macintosh computer. * You can fully search all text for names, places or any word. * View a graphic of the original page. * Print pages with full citations. * Highlight text and bookmark spots for future use. * Make notes in the margins and save them for future use. System Requirements The software is designed to run on a Macintosh or Power Macintosh (System 7 or higher) or an IBM compatible running Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or Windows 98. GenQuest recommends 16 MB of RAM for either system and at least a 4X CD-ROM drive. The CD-ROM price is $85.00 for orders received before October 15, 1998. After that date the price will be $99.95. I noticed that the company's Web site says the discount expired on July 31, 1998, but in an e-mail to me this week the company owner listed the date as October 15, 1998. Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society members can obtain an additional discount. 3. >From Sherry Re: Timothy Downing who married Sarah Chenoweth: For 30+years I gathered material on this line because evidence pointed to the connection with my husband's John Downing, son of [no proof] James and Nancy Gardner Downing of Maryland and PA. There are at least three intermarriages between the James/John Downing line and the Timothy/George Downing line. John Downing was in Madison County OH; the Timothy Downing line in Pike County, OH. For a number of years in the 1960s... I corresponded with Ethel Davis of the John Downing-Mary Boiler line. I have a snapshot of a coverlet made by Mary Boiler Downing in OH ca 1841-1845, and owned in 1969 by her great granddaughter Ethel Downing Davis of New Providence, Iowa. In the 1969 snapshot are Ina Pemberton, Ethel's daughter, and Ina's daughters Carolyn and Linda. >From her obituary [of which I do not have the original] in The Cosmos, Morris Co KS: Mrs. Mary Downing died December 13, 1882 at the residence of her son William Downing in Neosho Township. Mary Boiler was born in Greenbrier Co VA May 18, 1792. When about 18 years old her parents moved to OH where she was married to John Downing on the 17th of June 1813. They lived in Pike and Hancock Cos OH until 1859 when they came to KS and settled in Neosho Township...Mr. Downing died December 28, 1859...for more than 40 years Mother Downing made a profession of faith in Christ and joined United Brethren Church...modest and retiring in her manner, her acquaintance was not extensive. Ethel Gay Downing 1892-?, married Wilbur A. Davis 1914 Collins, IA and lived in New Providence, IA, dau of Ellsworth and Laura Louisa Brown Downing, granddaughter of George and Lavinah Von Buskirk Downing, great granddaughter of John and Mary "Polly" Boiler Downing, great great granddaughter of Timothy and Sarah Chenoweth Downing and David and Nancy Fisher Boiler. David and Nancy Boiler's wills are in Will Book I, Pike County OH. I have copies of photos of John Downing son of Timothy, Mary Boiler Downing, Isaac Downing son of John and Mary, Timothy Downing son of John and Mary, Emilia Downing Clymer, David and George Downing, Emilia, Jane and rusena Downing, William and David Downing, if anyone wants them. References and sources for the John Downing-Mary Boiler line: History of Hancock Co OH; Index to Ancestors, Dau of 1812 Veterans, 1892-1970, author unknown; Donald J. Smith 1321 Lawrence Street, Emporia KS 66801 in 1996; Clymer Cemetery, Hancock Co OH [I don't have list of burials, but there are Downings]; According to Ethel Downing Davis, several burials on Isaac Downing's farm in Morris Co KS; Ethel Downing Davis. There is a web site with Chenoweth genealogy and a debate on who Mary Calvert was and the disputes about the Chenoweth lineage. I don't have web address. In 1979 Mrs. H.E. Donnelly, 76H Calle Aragon, Laguna Hills, CA 92653 was working on the Chenoweth-Calvert-Downing genealogy, her line being Hannah Chenoweth who married James Carter Sr. in the 1730s. Also see: The Chenowith Family by A.C. Chenowith, 1894; Chenowith History by Cora Chenowith Hiatt, 1925; History of Virginia by John Bush, 1800-1803. There was a Chenoweth CEmetery in Pike Co OH which was, at some time, damaged by high water. I have a great deal of information on this Downing-Chenoweth line. How to share it? With whom? 2. I have probably told you this before, but our line of Downings started in Yorkshire, Eng., with Francis Downing, born 1736; he came to Harford County, MD and married; had his family there; then migrated to Fayette County, KY, where he died, and where a lot of his family stayed. A new distant cousin I have just met writes that she believes the father of Francis was also a Francis, of England, who married in Maryland, and died in Scott County, KY. I don't know her point of reference, and did write to ask her; there is a Francis Downing on the tax list of Scott County, same year as our Francis is taxzed in Fayette County. Born ten years apart, Yorkshire, England. Most researchers contend they are the same man; if so, our Francis married twice: 1) Susannah (Wells?), 2) Henrietta Viley. I don't know who the Sr. Francis married; I was just surprised to see she had it listed as taking place in Maryland. Regards, Sue

    2. Sherry, You might share it with my cousin, Marilyn Dickinson. We both belong to the same Downing line; but her husband has another line of Downing in his family line, and I'm sure it's the one with Chenowith in it. I can give you her snail mail: Marilyn Dickinson, P.O. Box 2155, Homedale, Idaho 83628. Unfortunately she does not have a computer. Marilyn says that her husband's Downing line will link up to ours, but she can't show me how because her little granddaughter messed up all her papers one day, and she hasn't had time to get them all sorted out and matched up again. Do you have PAF 3, the program put out by the Mormon church? I operate PAF 3; and if you could make a gedcom I could import I could add it to my files. Then print it out for Marilyn, if you wanted to go that way. Regards, Suehodnett@aol.com

    3. i believe Sherry made the remark on the relationships being complicated, but i fully agree with her, in that it has taken me over twenty years to sort them out, and there are still unanswered questions. It is not skeleton thing, but a lack of records thing, which of course is common to genealogy. If it was easy we would have had it figured out a long time ago!, joe >This message for Joe Downing (sender) or anyone else who might have response >or answer. 2. If there were any Downings there from MO they could be my line. Sanford Downing was probably from MO. He was born in the 1850's, don't know when he left MO, but he died in 1909 Burr Oak, Jewell County, KS, according to one family record we have. He married Anna Harris. That's about all I know of him. Here is Joe's email: jdown@nettally.com Sue Hodnett

    3. I'm over 200 miles from Jewell Co.,KS 1880 there were 8 families of DOWNING in Morris Co.,KS. I will make a list of them and sent to [DOWNING]-L. One from TN and and 37 that were from OH, KY, PA, IA, IL, MO and KS. I will also sent to list the 21 that are buried in the DOWNING. My Emilia DOWNING married an Samuel CLYMER and their daughter married Ezekiel EDWARDS. I think that some of them moved to north west KS. Maybe this would be your line? I have not talked with Joe DOWNING but would like to get his address. Donald J.
