    2. I was present at that ceremony at Bowers-Templeman cemetery. Were you there? Interestingly the orginal marker was stolen that night. It was replaced and cemented in. <g> Too bad it is inaccurate. The John Downing who served in Capt. Timothy Downing's company is part of what I refer to as the Mason County, KY, Downings. John was Timothy's brother. You can find more about these Downings at http://www.jps.net/egals/downing/jdhistory.html That is written by Joe Downing who is on this list. There is quite a bit of information there. 2. Anyone researching the early line of William and Mary Downing of VA: can you tell me if there is in that line a Francis born abt 1700? He might have married in Maryland, then went to Yorkshire, England. If anyone has a copy of some articles on that early line in VA, I would like to see them. I would cover the expense of recieving them snail mail. It is hard for me to get to a library as I babysit weekdays. Would appreciate greatly any help you could offer. Suehodnett@aol.com

There were > several marriages between the Downings and Careys in Luzerne Co. > Mary Lou Cole mlc@tlexpress.com To Mary Lou Cole from Jim Downing, Eli Downing (son of your Daniel) m. Mercy Arnold 18 Jan 1809 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne Co., PA. Your date of birth for her is correct. Three Cary/Carey's married children of Reuben Downing (b. 19 Feb. 1765 in Canterbury, Windham Co., CT.) who was a son of your Daniel Downing. Bateman Downing's second wife was Sarah Cary/Carey, his brother Martin was married to Laura Cary/Carey, and one of their sisters (Ann) was married to George Cary/Carey. This may be where your grandfather acquired his middle name of Cary. Most of the above information I got from our "cousin" Linda June Moss. You can contact her for sources. I believe she had quite a bit of it passed down through family records, Bibles, etc. She has two connections to our John Downing and Mary Bunce Meekins. One through her father and the other through her mother. We have about a dozen DFHSA members in this line. Although, Linda and I seem to be the only ones actively searching and sharing information. We have, however, received a nice packet of info. from a DFHSA "cousin" in Idaho. The source for John's birthdate is a deduction based upon Waldo Spraque's "Families of Braintree", Sylvester Judd's "History of Hadley", and Clarence Torrey's "New England Marriages prior to 1700". Judd maintained that John was from Braintree and Spraque's work shows a John Downam/Downham/Downing of Braintree (m. Dorothy). The last name varies depending upon who's records you are looking at, as I found out at the NEHGS in Boston. Spraque also says that he had a brother named Dermon/Dorman/Deerman (m. Elizabeth). Both of these men are also in Torrey's work. According to Spraque, they testified in a court case (#1073) in 1671 that "they had worked at a mill in Braintree 25 or 26 years ago". This would place them in Braintree around 1645/46. In that court case John gave his age as about 50 and in an earlier case (# 188) in 1653 he stated his age as 33. This is how I arrived at his birthdate as bc.1621. Both men had son's named John. However John (bc. 1621) also had a son named Benjamin. On 8 Feb. 1678 a John and Benjamin Downing took the oath of allegiance at Hatfield, MA. John's son John was born 7 Mar 1652 (an earlier child was also named John, but died nine days after his birth in 1644). Dermon/ Dorman/Deerman's son John was born 15 Feb 1647. On the basis that it is more likely that John (b. 1652) was with his brother and not his cousin at Hatfield, I am ASSUMING that John Downing who married Mary Bunce Meekins on 20 July 1676 in Hatfield, MA is the son of John Downing (bc. 1621 in either England or Ireland) of Braintree, MA. But, I wouldn't bet the farm on it. :-) I would like to send you copies of this info., as a second opinion is always an asset in genealogy. I also have a couple of descendant outlines that should interest you and I have found out that they don't travel well as e-mail. If you send me your address I'll get them right out to you via snail mail. Apologizing for the length of this, Jim Downing Sarasota, FL

    2. To Sherry from Ken Murphy Well, maybe somewhere down the line we may find a connection. I have seen documents of my Downings with the name spelled Downey. My Downings were Tailors. They had a men's tailoring store in County Cork and my cousin Richard Downing still ran the store, very limited, on our last contact with him by letter which was last Christmas. We haven't heard from him since then and we fear the worst being that he was 91. I wish I knew of a way to find out for sure. My Downings that came to the US remained tailors in Braddock PA before my great great grandfather came to Wheeling, WV. Thank you for your response KenMurphy

    3. To Ken Murphy from Sherry: Our Downings, we THINK, begin with James Downing who was born ca. 1735-1740 in Western VA/Wales/PA, depending on the unproved sources, and was married, we THINK, to Nancy Gardner, who was born ca. 1740-42 on the MD-PA-VA border region. This part is all unproved, family tradition as far as I know. John Downing, their assumed son, is real, documented! Source: Hist of Logan Co IL and Hist of Madison Co OH, and vital records. He was born ca. 1762, perhaps in what is now Washington Co PA, VA or PA-VA Territory. He married Hannah Frakes ca 1786-87 in the VA-PA region, perhaps Huntingdon Co PA, perhaps at Woodbridge in that county. They lived at Woodbridge, Huntingdon Co PA where some children were born, then went to Madison-Ross Co OH ca 1800 [Hist of Logan Co IL], lived in Jefferson Township 1808-09, went to Logan Co IL, Mt. Pulaski Tp 1822 [Hist of Madison Co OH]. One family member years and years ago thought they lived first along the Monongahela River. John Died 18 December 1838 age 76 in Logan County, IL Rev War veteran and is buried with his wife at Bowers-Templeman Cemetery there. Hannah died 20 August 1842 same place. Their children are well documented: John, Josiah, Sarah, Robert, James, Hannah, Mary Jane. So, because of your 1819 date, I suppose a connection might exist, but not in the above immediate family. The Biographical Memoirs of Greene Co IN 1908 include Michael Downing and family...Michael born 1760 in City of Cork, Ireland, died Jackson County, City of Mt. Sydney, Indiana 1852 and buried Downing Cemetery there. Came to VA during Rev War, then to W. VA. then Louisville, KY, then Washington Co IN until 1832, then to IN. Some descendants claimed DAR status on his war service. Mabel May Tally of Wichita KS was doing research on this line in 1969. Michael's children: Elizabeth, Alexander, John, Gallatin, Albert, Andrew, Paul and Peggy. Another Cork Ireland family is that of Ednumd Barry Downing, born in Cork 1801 to George Michael and Mary Downing...see query in Nov-Dec 1978 The Gen Helper, page 55. According to Edward MacLysaght's Irish Families, Their Names and Origins, Downing is a Gaelic Irish surname which has an English appearance but is rarely found indigenous in Britain...early Irish spellings were O'Duinnin, which became O'Dinneen or just Dinneen, or O'Dunadhaigh which became O'Downey or just Downey. Both have sometimes been anglicized to Downing. The great majority of today's Dinneens belong to County Cork families. County Kerry has the variant O'Duinin, anglicized Downing. Most of the O'Dunadhaigh families in Counties Cork, Kerry and Limerick have anglicized their names as Downey, some as Downing. >Sherry > >I am a Downing descendant of a Timothy Downing b abt 1819 in Ireland, we >assume County Cork since his children where born there. 3. Hello Jim Downing of Sarasota, Fl., Very nice to find another member of the family tree. I worked on Daniel Downing in the 1970's and haven't done much to update his info. I knew that Stephen Downing (your ancestor) was his brother and through him traced the family back to John Downing of Braintree, MA. using the genealogy "Ohio Descendants of 17th Century Ancestors" by Floyd E. Neikirk. How delightful that you have found a birthdate and place for John as none was given. Would you mind sharing your source? Do you happen to know the maiden name of Eli Downing's (son of Daniel) wife Mercy. They were married before coming to Ohio. Her grave stone gives her bd. as 5 Mar 1790 and the census says PA. I have wondered if it could be Cary/Carey as my grandfather's name was Wilson Cary Cook. There were several marriages between the Downings and Careys in Luzerne Co. You asked if I belonged to the Downing Family Hist. Soc. of America? No, I'm not a member. At one time, I was very active in genealogy with a CG but haven't been for many years. I still enjoy the quest and research a little here and there when time permits. The name Joshua Downing bc. 1796 Pa. is unfamiliar to me. Many people passed through Ohio on the way West. Sorry I can't be of help. Thank you for your message - it's the first time I have heard from a descendant of our New England family of Downings. Let's keep in touch. Mary Lou Cole mlc@tlexpress.com

    3. Sherry and others -- Just want to let you know that our John Downing is not connected to the Timothy we've been discussing AFAIK. However, three of his grandchildren married three of Timothy's great grandchildren in Logan County, IL, ca 1855-60. One does have to wonder though, why Samuel Downing [Timothy's grandson] went to the exact same area in the middle of Illinois that John Downing did. They literally were across the creek from each other there in the middle of nowhere. And don't worry that you haven't gotten back any further than James Downing. [I have never seen any proof of James' marriage.] I don't know anyone who has including people who have nothing to do but search for this link. 3. To Sherry: I too know the frustration of trying to find that illusive Downing ancestor. In almost 30 yrs, my research has moved two generations. The second generation came only 2 yrs. ago when Joe Downing found an old letter in Missouri that told us which Timothy Downing in Mason Co., Ky. was ours. Here we had been chasing the wrong one for years. Joe and I have been researching together since 1986. We don't always agree but having another genealogist to bounce ideas off is always good luck. Do I know who Tim's parents and siblings are? Wish I did. There was a story passed down in the Downing family that has confused many issues. I'm not even certain how many wifes Tim had. My feeling is that Tim was either the brother of uncle of Joseph Downing b. 1748 Maryland. I also believe he could have been the brother of a Willam Downey/Downing that died 1772 in Sharpsburg, MD. Tim witnessed his will and served in the Frederick Co. militia (Joseph Chapline's Co) in 1767 with this William. There is a Timothy Downing bc. 1700-1710 that appears on the Collins Hundred 1733 tax list. He settles on the Manor of Concocheague in what is now Washington Co., MD and is last heard from when he witnessed the will of Edward Doso[n] (Dawson) in 1747 Pr. George Co., MD.(Pr. Geo. Co. Will Bk 1, p115) You may have had this info before. We are fairly stuck on how all these Downings fit together. Lots of ideas but no real proof. Mary Lou
