    3. A John Downing who m. Hannah Fallin is listed in Gregath on pg. 282. He is a descendant of William and Margaret Downing of Northumberland Co., Virginia (John, John, William). A better source for information on John is "Genealogies of Virginia Families from the William and Mary Quarterly Historical Magazine" Vol II. Mary Lou Cole

    2. Joe, In your various research on Downing, did you ever find the name linked withthat of Throgmorton? It would probably be VA; that is where I first found them connected. It seems that erly Francis Downing in the US in 1624, was a servant to a Throgmorton. I found an early Kellam Throgmorton listed as a settler of Jamestown, 1607; in 1618, a John Throgmorton sailed from London to VA and settled in West and Shirlley Hundred, a corp. of Charles City, where also in 1624/5 I found Francis listed as a servant. Sue Hodnett > > ==== DOWNING Mailing List ==== To Sue Hodnett from Jim Downing I have read somewhere that anyone in Gregath's book was related to Emanuel Downing, but if so I haven't found the connection. :-( When I first started this quest, five years ago, I very quickly got back to John Downing and Mary Bunce Meekins (m. 20 July 1676 Hatfield, MA.) I really expected to loose the trail sometime in the 1800's. But, finding this John Downing got my hopes up that he was John the son of Emanuel. But, that proved to be a false hope. If anyone out there knows the connection, let me know and MAKE MY DAY ! Also, does anyone out there know where you can get a copy of Anna Gregath's book. I briefly looked at one in the Library of Congress and made a few photo copies of what, at the time, I thought were the only relevant Downings. Now, I know that my tree branches through other states (not just OH, PA, NY, MA, & CT) and it sure would be great to have my own copy of the book. Have you seen Richard Loveless's book "300 American Downing Families" ? I saw a copy at the Allen Co. Library in Ft. Wayne, IN. Next to going to Salt Lake City, going to Ft. Wayne is like dying and going to heaven for a genealogist. :-) Happy Hunting ! Jim Downing Sarasota, FL.

    2. please help. Need information on Francis Downing, sailed from London on the ship "Return" 1624/5 to Virginia, to a corporation of Charles City named West and Sherley Hundred. He is listed as being a servant of Throgmorton. There was a John Throgmorton on the same settlers list. Earlier in Jamestown, in 1607, was a Kellam Throgmorton. Also on the West and Sherley settlers list was another Throgmorton servant, Ellis Ripping. Does anyone have information on any of these names? Kellam Throgmorton was listed as a Gentleman. 2. I think I have seen the book "300 American Downing Families." But I wouldn't mind seeing it again. I have tried to buy a copy of Greggath's book, but I never get any response from the addresses I write to. My letters never come back so someone must get them, but I never get a response. There is a copy in our Boise library I have looked at; and I'm sure it is the same volume that Marline and Geraldine had. They came me a copy of their lineage, there is no doubt they belong to Emanuel's line. Keep looking, you might surprise yourself one day. Meanwhile, I have to keep looking, too. I don't know if the Mormon people have put Greggath's book on film? Sue

    2. Jim, Not that warm, doubt if we got our of the sixties. Thank you for responding to my post. I have met Marlin and Geraldine. They are from Fruitland. As a matter of fact, when they first learned I was researching Downing they came all the way to my house to meet me, and show me a Downing book. (The one by Greggath). they were nice people, and encouraged me to keep digging. So far, I can't see that we are related either, unless, as you say, it is way back in England somewhere. I know they belong to Emanuel Downing's line, so you must too. I hope we eventually will link up with him; I think he was a great statesman. Sue Hodnett

    3. Dear Jim, Your message via the Downing Mailing List was wonderful and full of interesting info. I'm especially pleased to have Mercy's maiden name of Arnold. My records show Eli's brother Reuben Downing m. Hannah Arnold. Is this correct - wonder if they are sisters. I'm also quite impressed with the research you have done to establish the birthdate and parentage of John Downing. Every source I have seen has evaded that question. As I mentioned, it's been a long time since I worked on this family. I was able to pick up the lineage fairly complete and evidently didn't do much more. It's embarrassing to see how precious little I have in the way of records. I'm happy to share what there is. The other Downing family that I belong to is my maternal grandmother's family. Where your Downing family is English and from New England where they are good record keepers, hers is Scotch-Irish and from "out in the woods" of the Maryland - Pennsylvania border. These settlers were used by the English as a buffer between the Indians and the Colonists and records are very few. I had been working on this family sometime when I discovered that not only did my grandmother belong to a Downing family but so did my grandfather. I had learned so much about the Downings in Ohio that it didn't take very long to pick up Eli Downing and his ancestry. I have Eli's will from Delaware Co., Ohio. He moved there to live with his daughter Eliza Downing Cook before his death. Thank you for your offer to share your Downing research. Please understand that I haven't been a CG since 1984. I had become certified in 1979 to see if I was good enough not realizing that the Board would send my name all over the US as a professional researcher. I enjoy helping others with genealogy but not for money. Genealogy has gone on and it's wonderful what is available now. I used to spend a great deal of time with genealogy but no longer have that luxury. I would be happy to look over what you have found - but just as a fellow researcher. My address: Mary Lou Cole 2425 West River Rd, N. Apt. 437 Elyria, Ohio 44035-2242 Good Luck!!!
